Nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills, DarkHorse Golf Club tumbles across a magnificent landscape that once served as a cattle ranch. The course incorporates a variety of elevation changes that range from subtle to dramatic. This tough layout is definitely not for the faint of heart. From short par 3s to monstrous par 5s, this course has a little bit of everything. The severely sloped greens demand accuracy and the bunkers were strategically placed to provide a multitude of shot-making opportunities. Tricky doglegs and uphill and downhill lies aren't the only challenges you'll face, there are also several water hazards that come into play throughout and an abundance of trees that make it even more difficult to navigate your ball. DarkHorse G.C. is situated 50 miles east of Sacramento and though it might be a bit of a drive to get there, local golfers consider the round well worth the trip.

Dark horse

I'll have to say this course is beautiful. Very well maintained. That's the only reason it got 2 stars. I'm knocking off 3 stars as some spots on fairway were very muddy or slushy, additionally, the golf carts are the worst! They are GPS modified, if you drive in an area they don't want you to, like a little too close to the little rivers, the cart just shuts off! There are no signs and no warnings from the cart, it just shuts off. This happened a few different time when we were driving on the fairways. We had to push the carts to get it to turn back on. Freaking ridiculous! This course has so many hills, you can't expect people to walk up the giant hills to get to their balls. They two guys I played with today were mildly handicapped and they were both in so much pain due to the stupid carts not working. I will NEVER play this course again just because of that. Freaking ridiculous.

The staff is also very rude. They made us skip a hole cause we were going to slow. I informed the staff the group in front of us had slowed our pace but they didn't seem to care. We had to circle back around to play the hole we skipped and when we got back there was 4 other groups waiting. Terribly run course. Avoid at all cost.

Horrible Staff / No Clubhouse

Take a close read: The course is great and a challenging test. Almost as challenging and testy as working with the horrible staff. It starts with the Starters cabin (as they don't have a pro shop) where I have waited sometimes for 15-20 minutes because the dirt clod of a starter wasn't there. Once he arrives I asked for a small bucket to practice and he said I didn't have time before my round. I have had multiple issues (aside from the beverage carts that are pleasant) with the support staff. Top it off after a round to sit back and enjoy a nice cold beer and some food watching some sports or golf.....oh wait they don't even have a clubhouse. I wouldn't waste your time driving 45 minutes from Sacramento just to be treated like crap. There are too many other great courses along the Sierra's that value the player. Don't waste your time or money!

Best Course in The Area…

This is by far the best course from Sacramento to auburn. Conditions are superb along with a new range with top tracer and new carts. There is no restaurant so not a whole lot of options at the turn but the complimentary waters are a great new addition. My one and ONLY qualm with this course was on my recent visit my cart told me I was in a restricted area multiple times even though I was dropping my playing partner off near a bunker or just off into the rough. This isn’t a big deal I just wished it would’ve been marked.

A very fun course. In great shape.

This is a very fun course, placed in the lower foothills. The course is a great design. The greens are all very exciting to play - tired with undulations. An approach shot landing too far from the hole could easily be a 3 putt or if your on the short side the speed makes it tricky. If you're a mid to high handicapper this course is a great challenge.

Give it a try.

Biily goat Country

WOW what a challenging course, you need to be a Billy goat to walk most of this course. The course was in great condition and the greens were true and fast. We will be back next time knowing where to put the ball.

4th of July Round

I played several rounds of golf at Dark Horse many years ago. I've always enjoyed playing there. I don't understand why I had to carry my clubs from and to my vehicle this time. Why are carts not allowed in the parking lot? For the higher priced green fees, you would think there would be a clubhouse to relax in before and after play. Just down the road at "The Ridge" you get all the amenities for less money, shorter drive and a comparable course.
