Nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills, DarkHorse Golf Club tumbles across a magnificent landscape that once served as a cattle ranch. The course incorporates a variety of elevation changes that range from subtle to dramatic. This tough layout is definitely not for the faint of heart. From short par 3s to monstrous par 5s, this course has a little bit of everything. The severely sloped greens demand accuracy and the bunkers were strategically placed to provide a multitude of shot-making opportunities. Tricky doglegs and uphill and downhill lies aren't the only challenges you'll face, there are also several water hazards that come into play throughout and an abundance of trees that make it even more difficult to navigate your ball. DarkHorse G.C. is situated 50 miles east of Sacramento and though it might be a bit of a drive to get there, local golfers consider the round well worth the trip.

Fun to play

I played this course on opening day and several times after. I haven’t played this course for several years. No longer having a club house/bar to go to at the end of a round was missed. I would still come back and play again.

Great course

The course is in really good shape except for the sand traps. The traps are very firm so it is like hitting off of solid dirt. They need to till them and then keep them raked. It appears that they are getting a lot of water from the sprinklers.

First time

The staff was very friendly and helpful. The. Course was in great shape and challenging. We paid $49 for an afternoon time which is excellent. The golf carts were top notch. Being able to sync your phone with the cart speakers was a nice option. Having a distance to the center of the green and hazard’s definitely helped being there for the first time.

The course would benefit if they had a club house. A place to eat before or after and to get out of the sun would have been the icing on the cake. I will play here again.

DANK HORSE

Excellent test of golf. Hole 11 is borderline unplayable at times but the rest of the course offers birdie opportunities. New carts are amazing and offer GPS, music, etc. No clubhouse here or a spot for after-round beers, just great golf and that's fine by me. Excellent country club conditions throughout, greens soft and receptive but quick in the mid-day heat. Love it here

Dark horse

I'll have to say this course is beautiful. Very well maintained. That's the only reason it got 2 stars. I'm knocking off 3 stars as some spots on fairway were very muddy or slushy, additionally, the golf carts are the worst! They are GPS modified, if you drive in an area they don't want you to, like a little too close to the little rivers, the cart just shuts off! There are no signs and no warnings from the cart, it just shuts off. This happened a few different time when we were driving on the fairways. We had to push the carts to get it to turn back on. Freaking ridiculous! This course has so many hills, you can't expect people to walk up the giant hills to get to their balls. They two guys I played with today were mildly handicapped and they were both in so much pain due to the stupid carts not working. I will NEVER play this course again just because of that. Freaking ridiculous.

The staff is also very rude. They made us skip a hole cause we were going to slow. I informed the staff the group in front of us had slowed our pace but they didn't seem to care. We had to circle back around to play the hole we skipped and when we got back there was 4 other groups waiting. Terribly run course. Avoid at all cost.

Horrible Staff / No Clubhouse

Take a close read: The course is great and a challenging test. Almost as challenging and testy as working with the horrible staff. It starts with the Starters cabin (as they don't have a pro shop) where I have waited sometimes for 15-20 minutes because the dirt clod of a starter wasn't there. Once he arrives I asked for a small bucket to practice and he said I didn't have time before my round. I have had multiple issues (aside from the beverage carts that are pleasant) with the support staff. Top it off after a round to sit back and enjoy a nice cold beer and some food watching some sports or golf.....oh wait they don't even have a clubhouse. I wouldn't waste your time driving 45 minutes from Sacramento just to be treated like crap. There are too many other great courses along the Sierra's that value the player. Don't waste your time or money!
