Nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills, DarkHorse Golf Club tumbles across a magnificent landscape that once served as a cattle ranch. The course incorporates a variety of elevation changes that range from subtle to dramatic. This tough layout is definitely not for the faint of heart. From short par 3s to monstrous par 5s, this course has a little bit of everything. The severely sloped greens demand accuracy and the bunkers were strategically placed to provide a multitude of shot-making opportunities. Tricky doglegs and uphill and downhill lies aren't the only challenges you'll face, there are also several water hazards that come into play throughout and an abundance of trees that make it even more difficult to navigate your ball. DarkHorse G.C. is situated 50 miles east of Sacramento and though it might be a bit of a drive to get there, local golfers consider the round well worth the trip.

Great Course

Friend and I thought the course was very challenging.

Sand traps were great, greens were amazing. Fairways were a little beat up. And wish there were a restaurant. To eat at afterwards.

Fluff bunkers!

The new bunkers are great BUT it would be great if they were machine racked and fluffed so the are less compacted. They are very water laden and the club skips when trying to hit a bunker shot.

Potential

Course has a lot of potential, but currently lacking. Around the greens were great, but rest of course is recovering. Desperately need a clubhouse and good again.

Beautiful and challenging course

The course is beautiful and very well maintained. The driving range with the top tracer was a big help for warming up, the course booklet helps you plan out each hole. Hopefully they will have a club house at some point.

Course needs some long term TLC

Based on reviews, I expected the course to be in good condition. Glad I didn't pay full price! The greens and tee boxes and sand traps are fine but the fairways are all over the map with dead spots here, reseeded dirt areas elsewhere all mixed in with perfectly good grass. This can be normal for the area this time of year BUT the dead spots and bare spots are sometimes 20% of the fairway. Totally playable, but I wouldn't go back for a couple of months.

On the topic of carts shutting down when you get too far from where you should be, I'm used to that but at Dark Horse, sometimes the line between go and do not go errs on the side of super conservative so after a few times of getting shut down in areas that seemed totally fine to be in, I got gun-shy and began to wonder when it was going to happen next.

The good news! - the course is a great layout, the greens, sand and tees are fine and the carts are zippy!

6:50 Tee time Tuesday 8/20

6:50 Tee time Tuesday 8/20

Course conditions were atrocious, for being August in California this course was over watered and we couldn’t tell when it had been mowed last. We didn’t see anyone mowing fairways and the tee boxes / rough areas had not been mowed in some time. Areas around and including trees were so over watered that your typical shot would chunk or not roll properly. Crab grass had over grown the second cut around most tee boxes. We do not recommend this course for the 75$ price tag. 13$ at the turn gets you a hot dog and Sam’s club coke. Overall course rating would be 2/10 at best we felt that is being generous.

Such a hidden gem

This course is top tier. I come back whenever I can. It's hard to overstate the value. It's a brilliant design and layout and the setting is simply spectacular. I've come to expect to pay more than twice the cost for this quality of golf experience. Love it!

Beautiful Day to play golf with the family

It has been a few years since I played Darkhorse. The course is still challenging but a lot of fun. Easy check-in and nice driving range/putting area. Relaxed ambiance. Greens were very fast. Cons: lack of water stations, fairways in rough condition, carts would stop moving on many holes without adequate signage or warning of no carts on holes....I spent a good deal of time driving in reverse to get out of these situations. Course seemed to be completely closed with no amenities when we finished our round at 5:00

Nice course, GPS restrictive carts are annoying!

First time playing this course with my son. He’s played here before. He warned me about the GPS carts restricting areas to drive on course. If you happen to drive in to an area or near an area that is restricted it will cut power to the cart and make you put it in reverse to get out of that area. I’ve had this before at other courses but it was overly sensitive here. This alone slowed down play and I was annoying which put me in a bad frame of mind. Right off the first hole when I about flew through the front window when it cut power to the cart when we had to drive near the rough. Anyway, other than the cart the course was fine, we played in the afternoon and it wasn’t too hot. Course was in good shape, pays to be in the fairway as the first cut is pretty thick. Be prepared to lose balls if you cannot keep it in the fairways or out of the hazards and ob; lots of thorny and thick brush. My son is just starting and went through a ton of balls. Greens are fast and most of them elevated. If you miss the greens be prepare to hit up to and climb up hills to the greens. Over all The elevation changes are pretty fun to play, reminds me of playing in the island mountian courses in the Philippines, minus the ocean of course haha. Definitely a good course just try to be prepared for the annoying carts if you are going to ride. No clubhouse to chill at, the cart girl last pass by was about 3 o’clock ish, the refreshment stand at the turn was closed by the time we made the turn. We started our round @2:10pm, but we anticipated this and had brought refreshments with us. So might want to keep that in mind and bring a cooler if playing later. Will probably play here again occasionally, but it’s a 45-50 minute drive for me from Roseville. If I lived closer would definitely be in the regular rotation. Also the range has covered “Toptracer” bays and a TV to enjoy. Good course just wished they’d turn down or even better off the restrictive GPS on the carts.

Don’t waste your money.

The fairways were in horrible shape. Patches of dirt were everywhere, including large patches in the middle of the fairway. The bunkers were not properly maintained. Will not play there again.
