PGA WEST Greg Norman Course
About
The Shark's turned in what's widely regarded as the second-toughest course at PGA WEST - Greg Norman Course in La Quinta.
No small feat considering the developers of the neighboring TPC Stadium ordered Pete Dye to make it, "the hardest damn golf course in the world."
"There's a difference," said Jack Guevera, a golfer who's played both. "You might think you have it easy if you play the Norman after the Stadium .... But probably not."
Here's the difference: Dye tries to kill you at TPC Stadium. Norman only wants to beat you to a pulp.
Not that pummeling does not have its highlights. Norman's 216-yard, par-3 13th is the kind of hole that seizes your attention and lingers in memory after the round.
What little fairway there is curves around toward a man-made lake. It is also tilted down on a sharp angle to the water, giving the golfer the effect of hitting along a ledge.
Each shot is a tap dance here. You could not even get odds in Vegas on your chances of avoiding all of the deep, slanted bunkers that squeeze the mini fairway even tighter.
"Greg Norman wants you to choke," TravelGolf.com West Coast Bureau Chief Chris Baldwin said. "The supremely-talented, enthrallingly-entertaining golfer cursed to be forever remembered for his excruciating collapses wants the average hacker to experience just a taste of this misery."

Golfer Reviews
Solid
Staff are always very welcoming some even remembering your name.
Course layout is terrific, we played last day prior to over seeding yet greens were in great shape
Driving range is a winner with an all grass experience and no mats.
Needs help
Tough layout but that is expected with a PGA West course. Difficult enough with the crowned greens but especially tough when greens are as dried out as they are now. Grass around greens very thin too so tough to get your club under the ball.
I think they are about to start overseed which is why it is so dried out.
Lots of sand!
Nice course worth the price. Fairway bunkers are ridiculous......some require SW to get out of. Excellent pace of play. Greens are very true and fairways are a little thin (normal this time of year).
Not that great
Green's were in terrible shape for the $100.00 bucks green fees. The cart girl we only saw one time on 3rd hole. It was 105 degrees and no water on course, so you would think you would see cart girl several times at least.
Good Not Great
We all know this was an exceptionally hot summer . That being said the course is in ok condition but not as good as other public courses in the same area which I am pretty sure have the same weather as they are within three miles . Covid has prevented players from raking traps so why does it seem that the course has stopped maintaining them . That is something regardless of the weather unless we are talking about too much rain should be good no weeds or grass in the traps . Maybe there is a financial pinch just get the feeling they are scaling back on the maintenance . This is a year round resort October things should be pretty good . I have played the course a few times a year for 7 years this is the roughest I have seen it . Still enjoyable still respectable but not what it should be . If Greg Norman came to see his course he would be pretty disappointed .
Beautiful Desert Course
Played with my wife and another couple that lived at PGA West and were very helpful in navigating the course. Though about 30% overpriced, we really enjoyed the course. Tee lengths are available for all levels of golfers (including juniors and seniors) which every course should have! Toughest part of the course were greens, which were cut a bit too short and dried out---hard to read, hard to putt. Would certainly play again...in cooler temps (104 today) and at a more reasonable price.
Greens in poor condition— tractor marks, sand, weeds and patches of dried grass and rock-hard greens
Playable Golf Course
Staff was friendly and accommodating. The layout is fantastic. The course was in great shape for this time of year. 10/6/20. Would definitely play it again.
Decent
Played on October 6. I am a +3 handicap just for a measurement of where this review is coming from....
Tee boxes, fairways are in excellent condition. No complaints on that whatsoever.
As for the greens: Paying $100+ for a round of golf should guarantee you great, if not, elite, greens. Today’s experience was worse than your local muni in the middle of nowhere. If I had to take a legitimate guess at the green speeds I would place them around a 7.5 on the stimp. Each green was a completely different speed than the previous hole. This makes scoring extremely difficult. I don’t know if it is the time of year or what the deal is with why the quality of the greens was so poor.
At the end of the day, the course was pretty vanilla but still had some character to it. If the greens were nice this would be the spot to play everyday.
If I had one recommendation to the pro shop, it would be to lower the green fees to $50 with the current condition of the greens, but from a business standpoint I can’t argue with knowing people will pay $100+ for a PGA West course regardless of condition.
Hoping for a better experience next time around.
Green left to die
It sucks that this course can’t ever keep a Super that has even got a clue on green management. They were fantastic two years ago at this time, but ever since the Super was let go because he just knew too much on how to care for greens, the GM refuses to get his stuff together and find someone that’s worth a toot. You can have bad tees, bad fairways, bad bunkers, bad everything, but if the greens roll like they should, the complaints are minimal. This course should be avoided until the overseed comes. It certainly is not worth $100+. Maybe it will be in January.
