Style Parkland
Par 70
Length 6210 yards
Slope 123
Rating 69.9

Thornton Golf Club sprawls across an expanse of wooded parkland bounded by the River Ore. The course is mostly flat, making it easy to walk but don't let the lack of elevation deceive you. The golf course provides challenges for all skill levels, it especially tests players who have a tendency to hook their shots. The river comes into play on the par-3 14th hole, which is the first of a set of five demanding holes. Despite being some of the shortest holes on the course, they are actually the most challenging. Long hitters will have to be careful on these finishing holes. The final hole is longer than most of the course's short par 4s but it is more straightforward. In addition to the interesting round, Thornton Golf Club has built its reputation on the excellently maintained greens.

Parkland Gem

A less than attractive drive in had me worried but a tunnel under the railway opens out to a very well maintained parkland course. Fantastic welcome from the professional.

Course was in great condition with lovely greens. Layout is a bit monotonous for the first 13 holes which are pretty much all up and down and tree lined on both sides. Last 5 holes were more varied however with a river to the left.

Fantastic value for money

Excellent

Greens were great to putt on and the course was in great condition.

Easy walking as not too many slopes, I can see how it’s popular with outings. Would definitely come back and we got it for a great price through golf now.

Only slight disappointment was our 4 ball group finished at 5.30 pm on a Sunday and we were looking forward to a drink and a meal in the clubhouse but it was closed.

Excellent Thornton

A great venue for a round. Lovely course on relatively flat terrain. Fairly tight tree lined fairways, but rough in between the trees sparse so easy to find your golf ball and find a decent lie. Greens running well and bunkers in very good order. Staff were very welcoming as were club members. We really enjoyed our game at Thornton and look forward to returning.

Nice course , excellent condition

Quite a short and relatively flat course which Is why my dad ( in late 80s ) and his pals like it ! Only 2 par 5 s , mostly parallel fairways , a few trick and quirky holes on back 9 . Course is very well maintained, greens and fairways in good condition! Would consider becoming a full member.

Excellent value especially on a Saturday afternoon pace of play slowed a bit as we caught up with gents medal. But not a problem. Well guarded greens the last few holes were quite characterful ! Easy walking course

Great value for money

Very welcoming Pro on arrival. Course tricky with a few risk and reward holes. Greens lovely to putt on. Course in great condition. Just a pity the play was really slow, but it was quite busy.

Clubhouse was lovely and with a great view of the first tee. Nice welcome here also. Had nice fresh made scones.

We will definitely have a return visit here.

Tale of 2 halves

Thornton GC what a beauty . Upon first inspection TGC seems a rather easy up and down parkland golf course . Keep it in the fairway and out the trees and you’re laughing. First few holes are a nice warm up; naturally was an easy walking few holes .

Moving into the back 9 well the difficulty really changes !!! Some quirky holes where placement and accuracy certainly trumps big hitting . Greens surrounded by bunkers and the need to keep it out the trees and you’re certainly onto a promising score !

For the time of year (24th December 2023) Thornton was a real delight conditions wise. As expected yes damp underfoot in places and tricky to find your ball in the rough with the fallen leaves, but that’s of course to be expected . Greens for time of year were almost too good (in a good way) and by miles put to shame the greens of other local clubs !

I’ll certainly be back and with that the atmosphere and general feel of the club definitely has made me consider joining them for the new season .

Thank you TGC

TRICKY BACK 9

Played Thornton last week and thoroughly enjoyed it. While the Front 9 had no real surprises, our fourball still found them sufficiently challenging. This however changed on the Back 9, where there were a number of ‘quirky’ holes. Spent most of our time saying that we would play a number of these holes differently the next time! The greens weren’t the best having just been treated the previous week but in fairness to the club the staff at the shop made this clear during an earlier phone call and offered a very accurate description regarding what stage they were at in respect of their recovery. Had a coffee and a roll before playing. Very good and exceptional value. Wouldn’t hesitate to play this course again although it would be earlier in the season when I understand that the greens would be immaculate.

Challenges when you least expect them

From the layout Thornton looks like a breeze. Front 9 fairly flat and straightforward. You can easily get caught out though. A couple of Par 3s that look simple enough but !.

The back 9 is the beauty though. It's not about big hitting but about planning each shot. Well bunkered Par 3 and a couple of short but tricky Par 4s make for an interesting time if you get too clever

Highly recommended

A wee day oot

Enjoyed the course very much. I spoke to Steve in the pro shop and he when I asked about the course and the greens he confidently said that the greens would be the best I would play this year. The man was right, beautiful pace to the greens and a fair few long putts going in. Very enjoyable course.

Lovely parkland course

Lovely parkland course in central Fife. Staff were very friendly. Course was moderate in terms of difficulty. Some holes on the back 9 were very quirky which was great. Reasonable price.

Brilliant course in excellent condition, best greens I've been on all year. Looking at course map it looks like basic out and back layout but it doesn't feel like it and the last 5/6 holes are crackers. Course is not long or overly punishing but enough to test you. Will be back.
