Holes 18
Type
Style Parkland
Par 70
Length 5914 yards
Slope 126
Rating 69.4

Niddry Castle Golf Club offers 18 holes of par-70 golf over 5,914 yards, providing a good course for all levels and ability of player. Magnificent vistas provide a glimpse of the Pentland Hills, and the holes all offer their own unique tests and hazards - plus there's a castle smack-dab in the middle. If you can control your shots and manage a solid golf course, then this patch of parkland ought to be on your itinerary for any golf trip to Scotland.

Fire away at Cannons Drive, the Niddry Castle Golf Club's 198-yard par-3 first hole, featuring a green that slopes away. The long hole is the sixth, Castle View, a par-5 524-yarder - pick right or left of the fairway at the tee to avoid sticking yourself behind a large tree for the second shot. Gan Hame, the 18th hole, a par 4 that measures 404 yards, provides a superb finishing hole, with an elevated tee shot to a fairway that features trees on both sides.

If you're going in winter, when the club sees fewer players, Niddry Castle Golf Club offers golf-and-coffee specials.

Great afternoon at Niddrie Castle

Everyone here is friendly. Mid week in afternooon it was quiet, we had a very enjoyable round with no one pressing behind.

Some people will not like it here, maybe a bit “marmite”, but I think it’s an absolutely lovely course and love playing here and will be back regularly. Great value for money too.

Great improvement

We played this course in May and it wasn't good.

But now it's much better, the fairways have been addressed and the dead grass has been removed.

Greens are consistent if slowish.

Well done to the staff, work in progress. :)

Poor green keeping

Nearly all tee-boxes needed cut. Flowers growing on all of them.

Greens had holes in them (and not spiked) literal mess of holes. Even seed spreading was a mess. One green keeper on a mower didn't even move the bunker rakes and went straight over it. Posts at all tee boxes had marking of been hit by a strimmer.

Bit of TLC, buy new tee box signs etc. Fix the bunker that was out of use with a sheet over it, fix the bridge. And better signage and some instructions on how best to play 5th and 6th holes which share a fairway.

Can tell it could be amazing.

Amazing golf course

I am a high handicap golf player and first time for Niddry Castle golf course. The scenery of the course is so beautiful, and have a bit challenge for new golfer as some holes can’t see the green due to a wee hills but there is a zebra pole for guidance for direction which is nice. Fairway is good as not narrow if you are not really confident for every shoot. Some holes you can see the train go by the side which is interesting. A nice photo which I share is my friend start the tee beside the castle is a nice place to take picture. Overall, it is a fun course and definitely will come again.

Something that I don’t like, the 9 holes didn’t finish back to reception, and you may need to finish 18 holes to go to toilet. Correct me if any toilet after 9 holes area.

Quirky, reasonably priced golf.

This is the first time i played the course but it won't be the last.

Superb value for money. The opening 7 holes, part of the original layout, are all different and each offer a different challenge to the last. Great variety and introduction to the course.

From here to hole 16 it is a little rinse and repeat but still tricky and rewarding enough to play. Hole 16, 17 and 18 end on a high - literally on 18 as you tee off beside the old castle from a high.

Overall condition of the course was good. Fairways cut well, greens lightning quick. A little scruffy in places but it added to the charm.

5* will be back in the near future.

Is there an investor out there.

Is there an investor out there?

...Not lost in the niddry castle gc (rough) sorry fairways, but out in the wider world.

The plus side the location is surrounded by great provenance,

The castle, very temporary home of Mary Queen of Scots.

The banked Bings leftover from James Youngs discovery of extracting Paraffin.

At one point near the 4th green, the union canal the railway, and the road are within 20ft of each other.

The layout of the original 9 holes are excellent and the back nine could be improved, so does Scotland need another history laden beautiful golf course? probably not.

But this course is currently in terrible (close the doors condition) what a waste.

Lasted 8 holes then walked off it was more than enough.

Frustrated golfers

My second visit to this course, very different from first visit.

We were advised before play the course wasn't at its best, however we lost over 12 balls on the fairways due to excess amounts of cut grass that hadn't been cleared away.

This spoiled our visit to the course.

It's a quirky course some cracking holes the 3rd and 17th in particular, unfortunately I couldn't recommend the course in its current condition to anyone, which is a pity as I think its a decent course.

Needs attention

Course needs attention. Grass on fairways needs cut and where they have cut grass there is lots of cuttings lying around which makes it difficult to find your ball.

The worst condition course!!!

Played from a golf now deal. Never again, the fairways were longer than an average course’s rough. Covered in old cut dead grass. Greens were slower than a fortnight in Saughton.

Whilst playing the greenkeepers were more interested in cutting the grass on the tee boxes we were teeing from, before blowing that cut grass on to the fairway!

Course layout ok, 18 holes with about 7 fairways was some laugh!

Wouldn’t play it again if someone offered me money to play it! Absolute shambles.

Worst Course I’ve played

Got this course on a golf now deal - only course I have played where balls are lost in the fairways.

Greens were awful and fairways were worse than the rough on some courses

Not even worth the £15 we paid

Won’t be back

Honest captain

Got a call on the morning of our game to say the course wasn’t looking its best as the mowed grass hadn’t been lifting properly and we could cancel if we wished

We still went out and played was bad in places but overall the course was in reasonably good condition

Greens quite long and slow but to be honest after the call in the morning and the condition it was actually would definitely play it again

Hidden gem

Great course, greens are immaculate for the time of year, slightly confusing layout on the first couple of holes and a small clubhouse but it wouldn’t deter me from returning. Overall excellent value for money and a very well maintained course in lovely settings.
