Rating 69.4

Niddry Castle Golf Club offers 18 holes of par-70 golf over 5,914 yards, providing a good course for all levels and ability of player. Magnificent vistas provide a glimpse of the Pentland Hills, and the holes all offer their own unique tests and hazards - plus there's a castle smack-dab in the middle. If you can control your shots and manage a solid golf course, then this patch of parkland ought to be on your itinerary for any golf trip to Scotland.

Fire away at Cannons Drive, the Niddry Castle Golf Club's 198-yard par-3 first hole, featuring a green that slopes away. The long hole is the sixth, Castle View, a par-5 524-yarder - pick right or left of the fairway at the tee to avoid sticking yourself behind a large tree for the second shot. Gan Hame, the 18th hole, a par 4 that measures 404 yards, provides a superb finishing hole, with an elevated tee shot to a fairway that features trees on both sides.

If you're going in winter, when the club sees fewer players, Niddry Castle Golf Club offers golf-and-coffee specials.

Nearly brilliant

What a belter. Properly hidden, parkland course played around the functioning Niddry castle, between bings & accross a substantial & well used burn. It’s pretty- every hole is like a postcard. Not long or particularly tough in layout with the risk / reward holes being mostly for show- play well & you could really go after the big greens. The only frustration is how good it could be. It’s pretty well kept, but if it was REALLY well kept I’d be queuing up for a membership. Greens are seriously fast, but don’t roll quite well enough to manage the speed- they spit approach shots off as well so you have to adjust your approach play to a more links-y style. This means fewer birdie putts & the speed means you have to lag first, which puts you at the mercy of the bobbles. Likewise, the meat of the course is well tended but some areas (service areas, like the area around the car park / clubhouse, bunkers in general) could do with a tidy up. There’s a plastic practice green so it’ll take first timers like me a few holes to adjust. Quite a few criss crossing holes and 2 holes with effectively one fairway - heading in opposite directions (!) so keep your wits about you. Despite these grumbles it’s a cracking course & cracking value. The starter was really clear & made sure I didn’t play the junior course by accident (I absolutely would have!) and the guys on the course were absolute gents. Was waved through a medal 3 ball & everyone helped me avoid getting lost! I will absolutely be back here - with some regularity! I hope that they get enough business to iron out these wrinkles. If this course got the same attention as Cardrona / gleneagles / Cameron House I’d play it over them.

First impressions as I came down the driveway and saw the clubhouse I thought that the course could be a bit shabby and rough.

However on entry to the clubhouse the staff were very helpful and friendly and the lady was a good advert for the club.she indicated that the greens were very good, firm and true and indeed she was correct as they were excellent and given that I was playing in November it was some doing.

The course is a mix of the Old and the new with the majority set in quite wide fairways with newly planted small trees so you can really open your shoulders and rip it.

The course is quite short and there are a number of drives and short irons.

It's well worth playing for the greens alone and I will visit it again

Good Course

Had the course to ourselves, nobody else brave enough to go out due to weather. Rained for first 3-4 holes, windy throughout round but added to the challenge. Course soggy in places but to be expected for time of year and recent rainfall but course still playable. Greens held up well. Would play again.....a dry day would be good!

Can't comment on clubhouse as was shut by time we finished round.

Wee belter

Smashing course. It's short in length, but don't let that put you off. It's quirky layout will have you thinking all the way round.

Best greens I've played on all year, and I include my home course in that.

Short Challenging Course

Niddry Castle is a quirky, short and challenging course. It is in good condition and is a bit of a hidden gem.

The off course facilities are basic and not up to the standard of the course. However, if you concentrate on the golf, you will have a good day.

Worth a visit.

Beautuful views, rather quirky but a little messy. A lot of overlapping holes and a fee silly holes. worth a visit, requires local knowledge to miss hazards. a bit overpriced eveb with discount (£14).

Lovely setting

Good round in the wind. Fairways and rough very good. Greens little compacted and consequently fast. Played competition 2 days later and sighed up for another. Will definitely be back

Great hospitality, golf and food!

Niddry Castle Golf Course is a wee hidden gem. The staff and members are friendly and we were treated to a sensational steak pie on our return.

The Course is made up of 9 old holes and 9 built more recently. The old holes have more personality but the whole course, whilst not being terribly long, is tricky and testing, and a straight ball is required to avoid the course's many hazards.

All 18 full greens were in play, and I have seldom played truer and well managed parkland greens at this time of year. Well done to the green keeping staff. Although there has been a lot of rain over the last week, very few parts of the course felt too wet underfoot.

An excellent day out and we will return to Niddry Castle over the summer to sample more of the delicious steak pies, and the warm welcoming atmosphere!! Thank you!
