Marshall Canyon Golf Club
About
Marshall Canyon Golf Course is nestled within the scenic foothills that overlook La Verne. The course is seemingly short at 6,110 yards from the back tees but it's not to be underestimated. The hilly terrain provides more than enough uneven lies and blind shots. The fast greens are also some of the toughest in the area but they are nicely balanced by wide, player-friendly fairways. The hard-to-read greens have subtle but tricky breaks that get easier once you've played the golf course before but even then, they still present some challenges. Marshall Canyon is a local favorite not only for the challenging round but also because it's a good value with great scenery. Golfers can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and will often catch a glimpse of the many deer that roam the course.

Some Friends at #17 Tee Photo submitted by LeChefDean on 10/19/2013
No recommend
They are currently doing major construction,
so I won't be going here for at least 6 months.
The problem is that there is no notice about the construction on the website.
Probably will not return, beautiful location, but not user friendly!
1. No bag drop off, I had to carry my heavy bag up a hill at least 100+ yards, then up stairs… no one to greet, take my bag, put it on a cart etc.
2. I had to find the starter, and follow him around… while he paired up players, I would prefer to practice putting, hit balls etc.
3. Course is built on the side of a hill, and the fairways zig-zag, and are right next to each other. There are many blind dogleg holes, and it is difficult to pick out a target angle from the tee.
4. The greens are very difficult to read, and many seem to be an optical illusion.
5. As far as the views, they a nice, beautiful trees, deer walking around, and a mountain golf course with a lot of greenery.
6. The cart girl drove by us one time, and never asked me if I would like anything.
7. The golfers in front of us were taking a long time on the greens. The round took almost 5 hours and with a starting time of 11:30, we barely finished before the sun went down in mid November. It became very cold on the last couple of holes.
Slow play
Busy Sunday, no carts available for a 12:45 T time. had to share a cart w/ a stranger, worked out okay cause he was a cool guy! Bunkers are no bueno, greens okay.
Pace of play
I gotta say this was the worst round in terms of pace of play. It was so horrible, I honestly don’t think I will ever give this place another chance. I started my round around 2:15, and on the second tee I already had to wait 15 minutes for the groups in front of me and it did not change for the rest of the round. It took me 3.5 hours to play 9 holes, unbelievable. I’ve never had a round that slow ever, didn’t even get to finish I stopped around hole 12 because sun was gone. Wouldn’t recommend.
This course has great features
There was some inconvenience due to the large scale construction, and I wish there had been a notice advance.
Course maintenance
A few holes were being maintaninced and makeshift greens were located way short of there usual spots. The driving range was closed too. There were no forewarnings of these two changes/adjustments and it would have been nice to be notified in person when checking in for the round.
Course under construction
I’ve been playing Marshall Canyon Golf course since I was 13 years old. I’m 54 now. Usually this course is great. This round was not. 2 of the holes are completely under construction with huge crews working in the middle of the fairways digging giant ditches to install what looks like water pipes. Both holes had temporary greens which weren’t even greens. They were flags placed in the middle of the fairways of those holes. Cut the yardage of the holes in 1/2 at least. Also, at least a half dozen tee boxes are moved up so forward they are even on any of the original tee boxes. They are moved o to the fairway. Again, due to the construction. I feel this not only needs to be made aware to the client/player on your website and the website of Marshall Canyon, but should have been disclosed to us when we arrived at the course by true starter. It wasn’t in any of these cases. Too boot, we all had to pay full price with no disclosure to play this round which I feel is a horrible value and bad business.
What can I say? I love this course!
I used to play here a lot 35 years ago or so and have always loved it here. It also used to be my local course, I lived less than a mile away.
This was the first time my wife played here. She loved it too, the scenery, the wildlife and the layout.
The course was a little beat up with the tee boxes were being re-seeded and the greens were a little rough.
As far as pace of play, Marshall Canyon needs to figure this out. 2-3 groups at most of tee boxes is kind of ridiculous.
Other than the few downsides I mentioned, MC is an awesome course!
We paid full price not knowing the course was under construction. A notification on their website would have been nice. Had I known the course was under construction, we would have chosen to play elsewhere. Majority of the tee boxes were covered in sand. Other tee boxes were relocated left or right of the fairway, in thick grass or just dirt. After 6 holes, we had enough. We called the front desk to ask for a refund. We were told that since we booked through a third party, we would have to deal with them. I asked if we could come back when the construction was complete and we were told no. Needless to say, our group won’t be playing here anymore.
Tough course
The course slope makes it seem like the course is easier then it plays. The greens are really challenging because of the amount of undulation they have! The greens were recovering from being punched but were in nice condition considering. The fairways were nice but if you hit it into the rough, your ball was lost. The rough was long and very, very muddy. There were 3-4 nice tee boxes but most were in bad condition or slanted pretty bad you never started with your feet even with the ball
Punched Greens but still a lot of fun
Beautiful course with LOTS of wildlife. Although the greens were punched and sanded, the course was still enjoyable. If you are tired of the flat, boring, suburban courses, try Marshall Canyon
