Kinross Golf Courses - The Montgomery Course
About
The Green Hotel in Kinross, Scotland, is home to two championship parkland golf courses, the Montgomery and the Bruce, set in the beautiful countryside along Loch Leven. The courses serve as an affordable, parkland option while staying in Perthshire near Gleneagles and St. Andrews.
Originally called the Blue Course, it was relaunched in 2006 as the Montgomery. The name comes from a family that has owned the estate around Loch Leven for the last three centuries.
The Montgomery is 6,508 yards and par 71. Undulating greens, streams and ponds are spread throughout the course. A number of holes have views over Loch Leven to the hills beyond. You can catch those sites through glimpses of the tree-lined fairways, which are on all of the holes - a mixture of cherries, oaks, beech, ash, pine, larch and spruce.
The Montgomery underwent various design changes in 2006, adding 19 new bunkers, four new white tees and a pond, all of which have enhanced the layout and made a difficult course even trickier. The keepers of the course are so confident of the changes they've made, they offer a "Montgomery Challenge": Anyone breaking 80 gets the next round free.
Kinross Golf Club has been in existence since 1888, but, like most courses in the area, the original course was lost to World War II.
Visiting golfers, clubs and societies are all welcome and tee times can be reserved at weekends as well as weekdays. Special discounted green fees are available for the residents of both the Green Hotel and the Windlestrae Hotel.

Issue with Montgomery Course Booking
My friend and I had booked to play the Montgomery Course at Kinross Golf Club. However, upon arrival we were informed that the course was closed due to maintenance.
When we made our booking through your website, the Montgomery Course was shown as the only available option — the Bruce Course was actually displayed as unavailable at the time. Because of that, we selected the Montgomery Course in good faith, assuming it was open for play.
We were quite surprised to be told upon arrival that it was closed, and that we could instead play the Bruce Course — especially as the website had shown it as unavailable.
We’d appreciate clarification on how this mix-up occurred and whether an alternative round or refund can be arranged, as the information online did not reflect the actual course availability on the day.
Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to hearing from you soon.
Poor welcome… poor etiquette.
I had a tee time of 1036am booked for today… it’s not 1150am. I walked off in the 3rd tee. Having arrived and given my name, tee time and course I was greeted with “you a visitor?” Then pointed in the direction of the 1st. Not the usual welcome I’ve received when playing all over the country and indeed world. My current situation is having moved to Perthshire I’m looking for a membership local so was hardly blown away on arrival.
I turned up to the 1st tee after a warm up 3 minutes early… where two members were teeing off at my time. I waited 10 minutes for them to clear the first. I arrived at the 2nd tee and waited 10 minutes eventually pulling out a 5 iron just so I could play and not keep waiting. I then waited another 5 minutes for the green to clear. I’m now in a bad mood by the time I’ve got off the 2nd green it’s 35 minutes after my booked tee off. I thought I’d get to play through on the 3rd… I was wrong. The group ahead were just walking off the tee, they then took 5 minutes looking for a ball and ignored my hand in the air request to play through. At this point it’s 40 minutes after tee off time, I’m another 5 minutes away from teeing off on the 3rd and that was meaning a 6 hour round. Something I didn’t want or have time for as a single player. I walked off, debated going in to complain but decided it would end in an argument given the welcome I received.
In summary, course liked good, welcome poor… pace of play the worst I’ve ever seen and zero etiquette for letting players through. Waste of money.
Greens let down a great lay out
Played the Montgomery today for £32.
Greens are in a really poor condition at present. What made it worse was some of the ridiculous pin placements. More time should have been spent picking an area of the greens that weren’t as affected or in slightly better condition. Course is a great layout out and very playable. Green complex’s are challenging normally but today was nearly impossible to hole anything due to bald patches, indents and pin placements,
PaulMcB79,
Sorry I have only just picked up on this comment. I’m sorry you didn’t have the experience we aim to provide at Kinross. We did suffer from a fusarium disease over the winter on our Montgomery Course and unfortunately the course wasn’t where we wanted it to be in time for the season. However I’m pleased to say we have now got over this issue and our greens are running well. I will contact you directly over the next few days and offer a courtesy round for you to return and hopefully you will understand why we all love it so much.

Lovely course in brilliant condition, helpful and friendly pro in the shop , greens were very good so early in the season, ill definitely be back to play the other course
Great Course even on a Scottish Summers Day
The weather was not the best for the round but this didn't put a damper on the day. Course layout was fantastic, with the pace of play being fantastic even though it was a busy bank holiday Monday.
Staff in the cub house and starters shop were friendly, even offering some advice on the opening first few holes.
Will be back to play the other course.
Beautiful course just not a £45 courses
The staff couldn’t have represented the club any better!! They were friendly, approachable, extremely knowledgable and extremely helpful.
Majority of tee boxes were flat and in good condition. Fairways were wide and in good condition. Greens were challenging and in great condition. All the Bunkers were under repair. They were full of pebbles and no
Sand (they told us about the repair programme before teeing off). Majority of holes are well payed out and have nice back drops.
Really enjoyed the round and would play again! Just don’t feel it’s a £45 course.
A little gem
Had a lovely round at the Montgomery course in Kinross. Very friendly staff and course in good condition in spite of the prolonged spell of dry weather. It was a challenge from some of the back tees, but if you wanted an easy round then playing from the yellow tees help with some tee shots. Good and challenging greens. friendly staff also.
A lot of fun for a little money.
Great course
We played the Montgomery and were not disappointed ted with the course layout and conditions..in particular the greens were exceptional, some of the best greens I have played on in over 40yrs of playing golf!
It was unfortunate that we were playing behind a number of 4 balls as we were a two ball..this created us waiting on every hole sometimes up to 10mjns to tee off….
Would definitely recommend the Montgomery and would return to play the Bruce course..
Beautiful course
Played in November so bit soggy underfoot. This didn’t distract from our round. Beautiful autumn scenery and we had a lovely warm welcome from the pro and clubhouse staff. Great coffee afterwards. PPI etc in place.
4 ball ahead did lead to a back up of players on the course!
Good Challenging Course
First time playing in Kinross. Lovely course and a good challenge. Really enjoyable round. Will be back for sure.
Great Course
I would highly recommend this course to anybody. The course was in great condition and the Pro gave out some great advice pre-round advising our group of the blind hazards. Great course!
First Class Experience
From the moment we arrived everything was exceptional. Made to feel welcome in the shop as we checked in, pro gave us a couple of local tips which was helpful. Course itself was very well maintenained and we thoroughly enjoyed our round. Looking forward to our next trip already.
Kinross Golf Courses are very busy resort destination, and this was a particularly busy day with numerous fourballs from Norway, the Netherlands, and our own membership. Pace of play as a single golfer at peak time is always a challenge. It is often better calling us at the Pro-Shop before hitting booking online and we can advise as to a more favourable time for single golfers. Pace of play on the Montgomery Course on this day was logged as 4 hours 40, and whilst this is longer than we wish, it did pick up after this customer walked off.
Customer has been contacted and given a courtesy round.
