Helensburgh Golf Club was founded in August 1893 as a nine-hole layout. By 1905, the golf course had been extended to 18 holes. In the 1920s, James Braid devised many changes, some of which are still in place today.

Nestled on the shore of the Clyde River, Helensburgh is easily accessible, only 23 miles north west of Glasgow. The golf course is situated above the town, with fine views over the Clyde estuary to the west and Loch Lomond to the east.

The par-69 golf course is 6,104 yards long. Helensburgh Golf Club's 175-yard third hole is considered the signature hole, with out-of-bounds on the left, woods beyond and a pond in the front of the green, which slopes from back to front and helps stop the ball.

Nice wee course

Visited this course last week. First the good points and there are a lot of them. Pro was great really helpful and chatty, exactly what you want from a pro. The members were great two ladies were good craik, as I was following them round, eventually let me through and were really nice. I did not have time to visit the club, but did use the loo at it was spotless. The course itself is fine and there is room to spray it about, If that’s your thing, but it is very score able. It’s a decent layout, if slightly hilly. I have read some reviews that says it’s mountainous, it’s not, you would need to be super unfit to struggle here! The course appears a bit damp to me so not sure if it drains well, it did not affect my game though. The only downside are the bunkers, which are poor and the greens had some form of fertiliser on them i think, which made putting impossible. This was a shame as I really enjoyed it apart from this. Might be my fault, or golf now, but it would be nice if the course could highlight maintenance days on the website, so players are aware of the condition of a course before they play it. Sure that could be arranged. I would recommend this course, maybe in the height of summer, when green conditions can be guaranteed.

Carry or electric trolleys, don’t use push trolley

My first issue was that there were no electric trolleys available that hadn’t been out so had a push trolley as the Pro said that the first is as bad as it gets. He was winding me up. With a push trolley it is hard work. Loved the layout though and you can see the slopes on the greens. The members were friendly and good fun to have a laugh with. The Pro Shop was well stocked.

Lovely course

Great day at Helensburgh , would definitely play here again although we were stuck behind 2 fourballs which gave us a time of 4 hours to complete the 18 holes. Upside to this was it was a glorious day so didn’t really mind being held up , maybe different attitude if it was raining

Great course

We really enjoyed our round at Helensburgh. The greens were in good order and the fairways well defined. It was rather wet in some areas but given the dreadful weather we’ve had it’s not that surprising.

Best Greens

Played with 2 friends, the area had had quite a bit of rain the two days before so fairways were slightly wet in places, however they are in great condition as is the rest of the course, the greens are probably up there if not the best I've ever played on and Ive played a fair few decent courses over the years, nice to not see multiple pitch marks on greens etc and they ran true, big credit to the greens staff as they quite clearly take pride in there work and it's shown around the course, the welcome we had in the pro shop was again very welcoming and helpful, we won't hesitate to return and play again in the next couple of weeks.
