Excellent example of subtle but compelling golf
As one of the handful of private golf clubs in the greater Myrtle Beach area, The Reserve flies under the radar. Opened in 1998, it distinguished itself with its two-cut (tee/fairway, green) approach to design, with original architect Greg Norman eschewing long rough altogether. Sandy waste areas and pine straw provide definition on a design that is otherwise very muted and low-profile.
The greens have subtle tilts rather than audacious contours, which work well with the fairway-height surrounds. I wouldn't mind a little more variety among the par 3s, but the par 4s and 5s are very strong. It's a course I'd be happy to be a member of.
