Please tend to the course - hate to see it die
I've played hear dozens of times and it's good value for what I pay. The walk in rate is not worth it given the current state of the course.
This place has so much potential. All it needs is a lawnmower and some loving care. Fairways are overgrown and greens always in need of a cut and rolling.
On the plus side - one of the driest courses int he country and playable when no where else is. No restrictions - such as mats etc and you must consider these strengths when waying up value.
It's getting hard to defend this course time and time again - for god sake - let it see a lawnmower!!
Course conditions
Played on Thursday 14th Nov at 12:30 fairways and rough hatd in places till tell the difference and the greens were awful patchy and bumpy was disappointed with the way it was also a few more direction signs would help this course has alot of potential
Decent course
Nothing wrong with the course some decent holes course itself needs looking after, could be so much better with a few pound put into it and a bit of care
Very disappointing visit
I normally wouldn't write a review but today we were treated so badly by the man in the pro shop I had to share something. We had booked our tee time and paid our green fee before proceeding to the first tee box. I had created a scorecard on golf Ireland as we wanted to count our scorecards. My friend teed off from the white tees, as is our right as there were no competitions on at the time. The man from the pro shop quickly came out of the pro shop and told us to only play for from the yellow tees, as the white tees were for ‘big dogs!!’ Obviously this remark was completely uncalled for, and as someone who has played golf for over 8 years and has considerable amount of experience playing different golf courses, I’ve never been told to get off a tee box because it’s for ‘big dogs!!’ We were perfectly entitled to play from any tee we wished as long as we weren’t interfering with a competition or were not holding up play. What a sad way to welcome visitors to the club.
‘Such a pity’
I normally don’t leave reviews on golf courses because you normally get what you pay for but today playing Down Royal Park golf course was such a disappointment. Nothing to do with the condition of the course. In fact, the greens and fairways were in great condition. It really was due to the complete lack of respect we were shown by the man in the pro shop when we teed off. We obviously were visitors and had paid our green fees. I hadn’t been told that we ‘had to’ play off the yellow tees, despite this not being a thing in a golf club. You can play off any tees once you have paid your fee and are not interfering with a competition or holding up play. After my friend had tees off the whites, we were quickly told to play off the yellow tees, as the whites were for ‘big dogs!!’ Now I’m not sure what that actually meant but I have been an gui member for 8 years and never been told to get off a tee box because I’m not good enough or a ‘big dog’ to quote the man from the pro shop. It was a complete lack of respect for us who actually play golf very regularly and are more than capable golfers. I had already started a scorecard on golf Ireland for the white tees because we were perfectly entitled to play whatever tees we chose. Very disappointing to be treated in such a way.
Poor condition
Overall course is in a as poor state. Most Fairways in need of a trim and of those that had been cut the grass cuttings were left in small heaps on the fairways. Several tee boxes were also in poor condition. Uneven and overgrown. By and large the greens were fair, bar the ninth which was covered in what appeared to be soil. I have played this course many times and both my playing partner and myself agreed that todays course conditions were far below what we normally enjoy whilst playing this trek.
High handicapper
As a high handicapper I really struggled on this course. Lots of holes where if you go right the ball is gone. Long grass lines nearly every hole and if you go off the back of the green you likely aren't getting your ball back.
If you hit straight and like a challenge I would absolutely recommend this course, amd I thinks it's great value for money. I'll play again after my game improves.
The course generally is in fair/poor condition and it’s crying out for a lot of money to be spent on it. This is not something new as it’s been in this condition for decades. Several water/pond features generally overgrown and very rough around the edges. The rough is very rough and greens, fairways and tee boxes just average. I know it’s been a wet winter/spring but it doesn’t excuse the neglect of the course.
Rude greenkeeper
I've left reviews before for this course. They generally pass comment on how hairy the fairways and greens are. Yesterday, the greenkeeping staff were actually doing a bit of work for a change....greens were being mowed, which is good. What was bad was that the greenkeeping staff kept cutting in front of players as they as approached the greens...holding up play. I realise the greens have to be mowed but surely paying and playing customers come first? In my experience greenkeeping staff do their job between players shots I wouldn't have minded so much but it happened on at least 7 holes.... deliberate, I wonder? Made for a very slow round
Great value
Great course and great value, can’t fault it kept well. Staff very friendly and helpful. Came last week for the valley course and returned to try the park course and wasnt disappointed.
Down royal
Cold frosty morning hard to see your ball because of the low sun. But a very enjoyable course and day out.
Great course
Brilliant course not many winter mat tees only maybe 6. No winter greens would highly recommend
Okay
Can't expect much from a cheap course, but for £25 it wasn't good value. £15 a round would make more sense. Fairways are poorly kept and the greens are crazily slow. Beautiful setting and with better maintenance would be a real gem. We were also stuck behind a competition which is normally fine, but they weren't abiding by their own slow play rules. 7-8 minutes looking for a ball is a bit much.
Good value
I have read a lot of negative reviews of this course so felt I would add my own. I have played this course many many times.
The bad reviews are all about the condition of the course. The points mentioned are relevant but a little harsh. You have to remember what you are paying to play. If you double the price then the value is poor, but on average you pay between £10-13 a round. This has to be considered.
The course simply needs cut. The fairways are a little long, but nothing silly. Again, same with the greens. They are slow as a result. Once you accept this then your expectations should get in line with what you pay to play it.
A huge positive of this course is how dry it is when other much more expensive courses are soaked, or even closed. The holes are nice and varied and the it is a fair test of your skills. It's fairly open and the greens do not have a lot of break - so it is a great course to build your confidence for a round or 2. It annoys the heck out of me when people pay a tenner to play and expect the quality of a course 3 times as much.
It's a good course
The course is great apart from the up keep the fairways they are very rough and in bad condition the whole course could need a bit of attention
