The course was in excellent condition and the pace of play was good . It has a driving range and practice putting green. I would gladly play here again. Staff was friendly and helpful
Bunker Cement
My husband and I played this course the first time during a warm day in February. Perfect conditions, but the bunker truly need to be reconditioned with something that resembles actual sand and not cement. They all seemed to be the same, but other than that, a pleasurable day.
Nice green winter fairways
Falls Village is one of the very few courses in the area that over seeds their fairways in the winter, so if you prefer playing on green fairways during these winter months this is your course. Nice course with some challenging holes, we normally play from the white tees but for the second hole we play from the blues, we like the tee shot over the pond and turns it into a long par 4.
Save your money
I played the course in 2015 and it was horrible. The greens were bare, the bunkers were washed out. The fairways were decent. I played 6 holes and got a rain check for the back 9.
Fast-forward to 11/26/2016. Called the course and asked specifically about the conditions. I was told the course was in great shape and the greens were in immaculate condition. Oh, how naive I was.
Paid $39 to play. The conditions were worse on 11/26/16 than they were in 2015. Greens were still bare, bunkers still washed out. I should have played 18 holes on the practice putting green. At the turn, I complained about the conditions to the guy working.
He said, I'm not sure who told you the course was in great condition. I asked him was he the only one working that morning and taking phone calls at 9:30am. He said he was. I said then it was you who took my phone call and told me the course was in great shape. He got quiet.
Nonetheless, Falls Village Golf Course has definitely LOST a golfer plus all the golfer buddies who go by word-of-mouth about playing another course.
For all those familiar with golf courses in Raleigh,NC, Wil-Mar is a 9/10 compared to Falls Village.
A beautiful day at Falls Village
The Good:
-Front 9 ....Love it... Risk/Reward
-Location
-Over seeding fairways with rye in winter is a good move
-Clubhouse interaction was very professional & nice
-Carts are in good shape
The Bad:
-The course still has a few greens with major issues...particularly hole #4 (#1 HC) which is really struggling to show any green. The fringe around it was still very soggy and a perfect 2nd shot from the fairway was punished by plugging 3" into the bank. Most area courses had a bad year with greens so we gave them a pass.
-Course stays wet unless you are in the burning heat of July
-Sand bunkers -Sand bunkers - Sand bunkers - My group came to the conclusion that you just cannot leave them as they currently are for paying customers to experience. Mgmt heads up...please either buy a dozen loads of the good sand and fix them as they were intended OR just fill them in and place sod. I would much rather my ball land on grass (even dead grass) than in a red mud hole like they are now. Think about it....dirt is relatively cheap and bobcats can be rented to place it in the old bunkers then you just need a bit of sod to cover - Problem solved. To be perfectly honest I think this will actually improve the play-ability of most of the holes for avg HC golfers anyway. I'm thinking of hole #13 on the back (Par 3) ...the traps are just gone (full of rocks and mud) but the hole does not need the traps to make it hard...the green is plenty difficult enough on its own. The traps could be either eliminated or greatly reduced in size to aid maintenance cost. Just do it...your course will greatly improve its image in the area golfing circles.
-Whats up with hole #18? I played the hole back in the spring and construction had started down the right side...fast forward 5 months and the area looks the very same as it did then. It needs seeding and mulch just to stop the erosion & from it being a eyesore if nothing else .
As a lifetime resident of this area we have lost many good courses to development & car dealers. One gets the feeling Falls Village is teetering on the edge sometimes when such small details go unattended. I hope that the course can get it together and hang around. I would not doubt that the area golfers and membership would be more than happy to pitch in and help get the bunkers fixed in a day if requested through social media. I'd personally love to help and it would be a fun project but either way you do not want a group to leave your course after seeing the shape those were in this week. One golfer tells another then he tell 3 more and then...you get the picture.
Good Luck Falls Village!
Solid course
Solid course. Still soggy from Mathew and a couple greens in sad shape, but still enjoyable.
Temporary Greens
Booked course through golf now. There was no advisory listed for temporary greens. 8/27 was my first day at this course this year and could not believe conditions of the greens, not worth spending money and time. This course used to be well maintained it appears this year is bad due to extreme heat.
Falls is always in bad shape.
I can't imagine anyone recommending Falls Village. I've played it many times and it's better practice than the driving range ... that's the best that can be said about it. It's always in horrible shape and you'll usually run into a bottleneck for pace of play.
The greens are in terrible shape. The layout is poor. You've been warned. You can play here because it's cheap, or because it's close, or because you cant get a tee time anywhere else ... Expect a one star course and you won't be disappointed.
Poor Course Conditions
The greens were in terrible shape. One green had no grass. In addition, I received an email stating the course was going to charge my credit card an additional $20.00 per person. I may never play Falls Village or use GolfNow again.
Niice design - good value - significant maintenance challenges
First time. Walkup weekday senior rate of $30 includes cart. Went off as a single around 9:00 a.m. Flew around the front, bogged down the entire back.
This is a very nice design that seems to be suffering from a string of bad storms and minimal maintenance staffing. Traps were either washed out or full of water, but nothing was being done. Most tees were in good shape, as were the fairways. Several greens - especially #4 - were in danger of complete loss.
The course has a very good mix of hole designs and green complexes. Not a boring hole to be found. Would love to play again in cooler weather with better conditions. Owner/operator needs to get some people working!
Cheap, fun, but needs some TLC
Course has a nice layout and is fun to play however there are some aspects of the course that desperately need to be addressed if the course is going to continue to attract golfers. The bunkers do not drain water properly and hold water very well. The day I played (granted it rained several inches the day before) there were numerous with 6+ inches of standing water. The tee boxes are generally uneven and some are completely bare of grass. But most of all the greens tend to be poorly managed. In fact there were several that are nearly completely dead and will need to be replaced soon. Other greens play well and have good grass coverage but are still slow and soft.
I'll continue to play here since they have 18 hole twilight rates of $25 but I would love to see improvements in course conditions to really make this place memorable.
Playing
Course was decent. Was paired up without being asked due to over booking. Pace of play was horribly slow.
Poor Value
This course is over priced. Many greens had black mold instead of grass and the bunkers were nothing but red clay, no sand at all. Many tee boxes were mostly mud and did not have a level spot with where they were placed today. The course layout is nice, back side requires thinking off the tee box, with driver being a mistake on many holes. Lots of blind tee shots, so knowing the course is a must.
Double Booked
the round started out great, but they double booked tee times, so when I made the turn, it was dead locked. I decided to stop playing. Fairways were ok, some greens were excellent and others were average. Nice course in terms of length, especially from the blues.
Side note, the starter warned me of chiggers and snakes if I hit the ball in the woods. Not the best swing thought on hole #1
Fairly Challenging course, great condition
I would highly recommend this course to someone local or even visiting. The course layout, and upkeep of both fairways and greens were a birdie!
Pace of play was solid, I only wish I could have showed up with my A game!
Needs bunker work
I was in 2 bunkers during my round. There's basically no sand-just washed out hard dirt with rocks in them.
Nice layout but poor conditions
Greens were aerated a few weeks before ( but I knew that). Worst part were the bunkers- no sand and several GUR. If the bunkers had San ( these never do) and if the greens rolled truer then this would be a nice course. I really like the layout.
Not bad
Not a bad course. The fairways are in good shape but the bunkers are often in disrepair. If you get a decent deal, it's worth playing.
Course holds water
Rained hard the night before but felt like it just stopped. ..standing water everywhere. I liked the tract, challenge from the back tees will play again just not after a rain. Was charged the normal rate not amount advertised on golf now.
Nice and green!
Falls Village is the only public course I know of in the area that overseeds. This makes it very attractive this time of year when every other course is beginning to brown.
The greens were rolling very well and the fairways were in good shape. Several areas of the course were still extremely wet even after not seeing any rain for at least a week, although this course does intend to stay pretty damp.
All in all the course was in good shape and I would play there again.
I played there also in 2016 and even commented on the sad state the bunkers are in but its obvious Owner/management just does not understand how much Golfers hate to see red mud & dirt where sand is meant to be. If you read my post below I suggested they just fill them in and place sod over them.
Falls Village needs some ownership love'n before it goes the way of the Dinosaur.
