Long Course and Look Out For Nature
On hole one a crow stole 2 of my partner's pink golf ball. I bet it has a pretty stash somewhere. Nature is great. We saw 3 colors of Fox Squirrels and sand cranes. The holes are long. The fairways had areas of dead grass but we are in a drought. Some of the putting greens were mostly sand. The cart paths need work. Most of the holes were unremarkable. It is very flat which I appreciated since I was playing injured. We got a good rate so I was ok with the value.
Needs work
Love the course but with our drought, course is very dry.
Some greens look like bunkers
I was told over 6 months ago that this course along with another nearby course have been bought by a new owner and will be renovated immediately. The greens were the worst I had ever seen in person and some greens did not have any grass at all. The conditions of a few greens on this date 4/19/2023 were in worse condition than 6 months prior. Very few differences since the alleged new owner has taken over. I did notice one green in particular had been repaired, but it was still brown on the back half. The average price to play at this course is not worth the price for the poor conditions of the greens.
Fairways
Due to the time of year the overseeding is dying off so the fairways are a bit dry and rough. The greens are in good condition and run true.Have played it earlier in the season and it was good condition. The value on Golf Now made up for the spotty fairways.
First time playing
First time playing this course. The front nine layout is great and greens were in terrific condition. Fairways need work but I’ll trade that off for the greens condition. Back nine was rough but you can tell they are working on it. Staff was amazingly cordial and accommodating. We will be playing there again for sure.
Course Condition
Some of the greens were in bad shape. Staff should advise golfers of these conditions, especially when the green were air rated etc. Overall my round was great.
Course needs some time
There are many great things about this course. But the weather has deteriorated many of the greens and the fairways. Right now it is in rather poor shape. However, they plan to shut down part of the course for a few weeks and recede and water and with what they’ve already done for the course I’m sure they will have it back in tiptop shape in a few months.
Nice course looks like they just aerated the greens on the pines, all in all, great day with friends, staff was also very friendly!
Overall
Beautiful course layout with lots of potential. It is much better than before so I can’t wait until the improvements are complete! The staff are always wonderful!!!!
I love this course
Great course and very long. All courses hurting from lack of rain in Florida but still Sugarmill doing better than most and fairways are basically fine. Dollar for dollar this place is great. Drive 30 miles to play Sugarmill 4 times/month .
Sand
Back nine (the pines) greens were ALL SAND! They were aerated which I understand but they could tell you that before you go out on the course
Okay
Greens and traps were decent but fairways are not good.
Bring your driver !
Sugarmill Woods is a great layout and a long course . Great value here and I play all Tampa Region golf courses thus LISTEN UP ... the best value and best courses are NORTH of Tampa/St Pete and Homosassa, Fl has three of them .. World Woods (now Cabot Citrus Farms), Citrus National and Sugarmill Woods are all top ten NORTH REGION along with Glenlakes, Brooksville CC , and Lake Jovita. For those of you who can drive up the Veterans Expressway to see what good golf is like under $50 .. Congratulations .. if you can even go farther to Homosassa Springs and play the wonderful Plantation at Crystal River then you too can WAKE UP to great golf in the NORTH TAMPA REGION. I have given you the Top Ten under $50 in all Tampa so GO NORTH and thank me later . Sugarmill Woods is outstanding . (Saddlebrook is great too)
