RedTail Golf Club
About
Atypical of many Florida golf courses, RedTail Golf Club is a links-style layout dotted with 100-year-old oak trees and azaleas among its rolling green fairways. Designed by Dave Harman, who also did Shingle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, the course features four lakes with water coming into play on the last five holes. Holes 14-18 work their way around the largest lake on the course, while the finishing hole's approach shot plays over another body of water in front of the clubhouse. Located in rural Sorrento a little more than a half hour north of Orlando, RedTail Golf Club prides itself on catering to "members only."

Staff is very friendly and helpful. I went to pick up my bag to put on a cart and it was already done! The staff didn't even hang around for the tip I would've gladly given.
The course is a fair test, but you need to know it: there are some blind shots and grassy areas you don't want to hit into. Once you figure it out, the targets are clear and you can really test your game.
6 sets of tees lets you find your yardages (5135-7152). The course is nice but is in a little bit of disrepair: a few tee boxes are being resodded as of this date and, on my round at least, we were using the back tees on all the par 3s, making them a little long for me. There are spots on quite a few greens that you can't putt through: take your choice on whether you tough it out or move your ball.
All in all, I enjoyed RedTail and hope to go back soon.
Course rebounding
Played a few months ago and the greens, tee boxes and fairways were bare and had a ton of dead spots! Now the rye grass is coming in nicely and course is starting to look great! I much prefer playing here during the winter than summer. They also did a great job cleaning up the debris just off the course, making the aesthetics much more appealing!
Wasn't too many people playing so the pace allowed to practice some more difficult shots!
OK. Needs Work
Winter rye makes the course playable but is only a temporary fix. A lot of ball marks on the greens are not being repaired so the greens are bumpy. Many of the bunkers are packed sand so it’s hard to get a good bunker shot. Whoever cut the holes in the greens must have been drunk, the one on 18 was the worst, the plastic cup was even with the ground, my ball hit the plastic and bounced off. It looks like they need to spend some money on a good maintenance supervisor.
Tees and greens have been reseeded. Another month and I think the course will be back to ‘GREAT’, again.
Recovering nicely
This course is recovering nicely after the loss of the irrigation system a few months ago. Overseed has come in pretty well and should only improve over the next few weeks.
Golf course is improving as weather and overseeding is helping.Nice layout with challenging holes!
COURSE IS IMPROVING
Fairways , tee boxes and greens have been seeded and it shows. If you are not in the fairway, the rough is brutal. The tee boxes are good and the greens are growing in but very slow. Give the course a few more weeks for further improvement.
Great Round
We played on Saturday, it was pretty croweded but pace of play was good. Nice layout and fairway was maintained well with good rolling greens. Worth a trip
Awesome course
I would like to mention this course is in great shape. The staff are awesome Drew is a great person and he is a good person. I never had any issues and pace of play is really good. I would highly recommend this course to anyone looking to have a fun time golfing. Keep up the amazing work that you guys are doing
Liptick on a pig...
The course conditions have continued to deteriorate since the current ownership group bought the club in April of 2021.
Every aspect of the golf course, from the driving range that looks like a scene from another planet, the tee boxes with no grass, the fairways full of weeds and bug infested greens is horrible. The range balls used are the worst I have ever seen - most courses would throw 95% of them away and replenish on a regular basis.
They have lost 90% of the full golf members they had when they took over.
From what I can tell, the range picker is broken and left under a tree in the middle of the range forcing the crew to hand pick balls from the range.
About a month ago the ownership group was essentially forced to put Rye seed on the course after continued poor reviews (most noting the horrendous condition of the course) led to just a handful of players each day. For most courses view over-seeding with Rye in the Fall is a part of normal operating procedure. It would not have happened had ownership not been forced to do it given the poor reviews, lack of play and the lienholder on the course attempting to protect their asset. Initially the Club did not water the course after the Rye was put down so nothing grew. Someone must have realized that grass needs water to grow and they began watering. The course now looks visually attractive from a distance. However, once you get a little closer, you can still see all the weeds everywhere that will take over again once the rye grass dies without the appropriate preventative maintenance and re-seeding. I wonder if the ownership group understands that the rye grass will die in the Spring and the course will need to be re-seeded?
The bunkers remain horrendous having had no sand in them for a long time such that the skeleton crew does not bother to maintain them. Many of the bunkers have grass growing in them and all of them have 6-18" weeds surrounding them. They are in such poor condition that I saw golf cart tracks through several bunkers on the 9th hole.
They have a very small maintenance crew that works with outdated and poorly maintained equipment. So much so that there are rumors they are operating with mowers that share parts.
It is such a shame - the layout remains one of the best in the area. If the course had an ownership group that had an interest in building a 1st class facility, attracting membership would be extremely easy.
The hope is that the current ownership group will either voluntarily sell (several buyers have expressed interest) or forced to through the pending foreclosure procedure. It cant happen soon enough...
Second Chance Failure
The first time I played this course I thought it was an absolute waste of a drive and money. I was then told by several people that it’s in great shape and a great course, so it’s been several years and I have it a second chance. Absolute garbage. No pride. Cost is highway robbery. Course on a Sunday hasn’t been mowed in several days, even the fairways were way to fluffy. Unfortunately I theink the course was poorly constructed and there’s just nothing you can do to fix it, glad I don’t live there! Will not be returning, and will be giving a hard time to the guys that suggested it.
Some signs of life
Overseeding all over the fairways and greens. Needs less play and people to fix their ball marks and divots (get an extra one of each please players?). Rough areas are more hard pan, the fairways must have been not so good before the over seeding. New water pump as well. That is a big investment $. Looks like new ownership for the 2nd time in a few years. Kind of in hot potato mode it seems. It is a great layout in a nice community. Greens slow with the baby grass growing up. 90% of traps have no sand, hard like cement. Play those as hazards without a penalty stroke. Need to at least add sand (mixed with some dirt so it’s not ashtray) in the bunkers by the greens. You could hit a ball off the dirt in the fairway bunkers, played as waste areas. Will check reviews over the winter to see how it’s shaping up here.
