The Golf Club of California
About
Situated just outside of Temecula, the Golf Club of California enjoys a scenic landscape provided by the rolling hills north of San Diego. The terrain is ideal for a round of golf, offering verdant acres of countryside blanketed with mature oaks, sycamores, and towering eucalyptus trees and accented with redtop grasses, which border the carefully manicured fairways and greens. Although there is an abundance of trees, the course still has many wide-open areas. The pristine white sand bunkers and colorful wildflowers are a beautiful contrast to the lush green of the course. The layout is not particularly long, but golfers should be prepared for a challenging round of target golf. The course features narrows fairways, plenty of elevation changes, and tricky greens that require an accurate approach. There are also a few meandering creeks that come into play.

Beautiful place
Very fun with some challenging carries and narrow greens.. Greens a bit rough on the front nine; better on back. Really nice bar and good margs!
A challenging course to test your skill
A little long way to drive to play this course, about 50 miles away, but it is worth the effort. Definitely need your course management skill to play well.
Disappointed with the condition of the greens. They have recently been punched, not uncommon this time of year, but there was no mention on either Golf Now or the course website that indicated the greens were still healing from being punched. I would have liked to know beforehand that the greens were not in perfect condition as I would have held off playing the course until the greens were fully healed. I was surprised that neither website I looked at prior to making the Golf Now booking mentioned that the greens were still healing from their punching.
Where are the yardage markers?
Two issues with this course...total lack of yardage markers. The only one you'll see is at 150, the standard black and white striped pole in the fairway. No 200, no 100, nothing on any sprinklers and I look over and over. Tried shooting with a laser range finder...spotty results, signal wasn't returning. Could've been the fog, but I noticed a lack of reflectors on the flag poles.
Second, the greens had been recently punched (week or so)...no warning with the online reservation. Flat out, the greens completely sucked. I wouldn't have played here had I known.
GolfNow didn’t disclose the green is aerification.
When we booked the Tee Time on GolfNow, it didn’t disclose the green is punched and sanded. We felt it is a huge letdown. The green fee we. Paid for this round is NOT worthwhile. We believe we are entitled for refund!!!
Has so much potential
The course was a little chewed up and dry but greens were in excellent condition. Staff was a little gruff, we just didn't get a friendly vibe from them. We asked about food when we checked in (7:30am) and was told by pro shop that no food was available, just the coffee in the shop.
Got out on the course, it's a gettable, but challenging track (i'm an 18 handicap, so YMMV).
The amenities on the course were SPARSE. For a high-desert course, there was only one water cooler on the entire course. Saw the cart girl twice (once each 9), which is when we learned that, indeed there was a snack bar with food, drinks, etc.
Got stuck behind a 3-some that wouldn't let our 4-some through, so we waited a lot, but still got around in 4.5 hours.
I will say, we had a group of members behind us that were some of the nicest guys we've met. Never pressed us, never hit in to us and had a good chat while waiting for our shots.
There were marshal's on the course, but as far as we could tell they never pressed the group to speed up, probably because they weren't that far behind schedule.
The clubhouse is beautiful, the course is a little chewed up, but OK. If they can fix the staff friendliness and the fairways, this would be a great excursion. Overall an OK experience, but probably wouldn't play it again.
Course continues tp deteriorate
This started as a top condition course. We have played it several times over the years and the condition of the fairways gets worse every time. We hadn't played here in 2 years and were told by staff that things were better. BIG NOT...
A great find!
Our first time playing this course and it was an adventure. Each hole had its challenges and we were given an informative brochure with tips for each hole and some humour too. We had a great time and would highly recommend this course. Mark and Jim in the pro shop were extremely helpful.
Nice round in April
So really happy we found this place. Tough course but overall in good shape. Pace of play was quite slow unfortunately, staff were very good. Vistas from various hole were beautiful.
punched
The fairways were punched a little. Probably a week or so ago. Tee boxes as well, but not a big problem. Plays much easier from the whites. Very hard course, tricky greens but a beautiful course. Hate #9. Never get in position to go for that green. Shot 40 on the B9, so that helped the ride home.
wet fairways
With all the rain we've had, I'm surprised it wasn't more soggy in the fairways. Cart path only made this course extremely long since the cart paths are usually not very near the fairways. Only had to lift, clean and replace a few times. This course holds the rain better than most. Great greens, which means they will probably be aerating soon. Always a pleasure playing this difficult but fair course.
Good layout good price
The golf club of California is a good layout with a lot of fun holes. The course was in very good condition considering the large amounts of rain we have had lately. There wasn’t much stuff around but the ones I did talk to were very and friendly. The halfway house could have some better amenities
course in good shape green from all the recent rains.
Great challenge for my level of play
I am a 20+ handicapper. The fairways are pretty tight, and there is a lot of OB throughout the course. Deffinately need to keep it in the fairway or close to it. Greens have been under repair, but they are in great shape. I will definitely come back to this course.
