About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2017.
The Champions Club at the Retreat was carefully carved from the canyons that surround the Cleveland National Forest. The golf course closely follows the natural contours and depressions of the landscape, providing a variety of elevation changes with which to contend. The undulating greens usually have multiple tiers and the hills and valleys guarantee a few blind shots and forced carries. Your shots won't need length necessarily, but they will need to be straight. Each hole offers not only a unique design thanks to the diverse terrain but also different, equally stunning views. To make this formidable golf course more playable for a wider range of skill levels, a 2011 renovation took out 16 punishing fairway and greenside bunkers but there are still plenty there to provide a challenge.

Course in great shape but 5 1/2 hr round
Course in best shape I have seen in a while but played on a Friday afternoon and it took 5 1/2 hours. They do not employ a Marshall to keep pace moving. Do not think I will go back until that changes.
to hard and lot of walking
The course was very hard to play, bunkers were dry, greens were miserable, if your on the pga tkur be ok for us regular golfers no way
tough course
The course is very tough but well worth it if you like challenges
Target golf
Keep the driver and your ego in the bag! Be smart and take the starter's advice! Fun round, tough greens and lots of creative iron shots.
Never come back
Our tee time was 9:20 but we started 10:10.
They said because of tournament. At the time of booking there were enough time, they never excuse to us. Staffs need to lesson. Thry wasted our time.
Lame tourney m
Tee time at 9:00 find out they have a tournament teeing off at 8:00, wasn't notified that, otherwise I wouldn't have golfed here. Half the fairways the grass is growing opposite your swing so chunking the ball is very common. We had to start on back 9, then when we hit the turn we had an open tee box but they HAD to let this slow 3some go in from of us even though we obviously had an earlier tee time. Just terrible organization and pace got really slow on the back. Place is too tough for the terrible conditions too. Felt like I had to aim for green grass instead of the half dirt half mulch they consider the fairway.
You better hit to the right spots
This is a course that one needs to "learn" in order to play it best. When checking in, I asked for a course guide, but they were sold out, so I worked from notes taken from the course website. For mid-winter, in a drought, the fairways were in decent shape. Greens were in good shape, rolling mostly true, and pretty fast, especially as the day progressed and conditions dried out. However, there were too many ball marks left unrepaired - a problem seemingly common to most public courses ( I repaired mine and all that I saw, within reason). Bunkers varied from rocky gravel and hardpan, to soft fluffy sand - generally better around greens, and worse in fairways. Pace of play was too slow, but that could be in part that I played solo, until joining the group of 2 that caught up to me at 15th hole.
Since I had the whole day available, after completing 18 holes, I went to the pro shop and payed for a replay for $25. So in the span of a week, I have on 2 days played 72 holes of golf, and had fun doing it.
I am glad to have discovered Champions Club at The Retreat. This is a course that is enjoyable for the challenges it provides along with some great scoring opportunities. The golfer who employs good course management skills could be rewarded.
I look forward to playing this course again.
Tough as ever
This course is as tough as it has ever been. Firm and fast fairways, unforgiving bunkers, and diabolical greens. If you think your "A" game is up to snuff, bring it here and challenge yourself.
Tricky and fair
Very tricky and "target" golf course to play for the first time. Must be accurate and precise with some drives; Not a lot of margin for inaccuracy on this course. Overall, fun day and enjoyable. Would I play it again....yes!......Just because I now understand the course and where to hit (place) it. This could be a very frustrating course for a high handicap golfer 18+!!
Create lot of challenging
Very good course . Highly recommend able for the money spend playing . I play any time
This course has great features.
This course is very interesting and challenging .
The scenic view of this course is very fantastic surrounded
by valley and mountain.
Retreat
Very good value for the money and a very friendly and helpful staff
Nice Track
Grea course...you have good control of your irons for this course.
the course ia challange
the course is in good shape as always I love to play more, but I live about one hour away, but I come meny times is possible, great course.
Weekend hack
Very challenging golf course that requires skill and some luck. However the more i return the more I enjoy playing it.
Challenging course - be warned
This was a good course, but not very woman friendly. I'm a 15 year female golfer - and drive about 190 average yards. There were several holes that I wouldn't be able to clear because the ravines were too wide. The Par 3's were very doable and the tee boxes and greens were in great shape. Very tough pin placements as most were on a slant. Fun but very challenging.
Challenging
Staff has always been very friendly. If you play here you better bring your accuracy. Due to the numerous canyons and lateral hazards play can be slower. Greens are in great condition and the fairways have died out but it is winter. Going through golf now I paid less than $30 to play here and it is well worth it
Great course!
I love this course. I don't get to play there as often as I would like, but I have never had a bad experience!
Target golf to the max...pretty much SNIPER golf
Pretty fun, very well maintained, a little wild with all the blind shots, uneven lies, elevation changes, etc. i'd still play it once in a while though. fun for target practice
Angry greenskeeper
Tough layout, silly pin placements, and a staff that was angry I received such a reasonable rate. I did find about 60 golf balls, so that was good.
