About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2017.
The Champions Club at the Retreat was carefully carved from the canyons that surround the Cleveland National Forest. The golf course closely follows the natural contours and depressions of the landscape, providing a variety of elevation changes with which to contend. The undulating greens usually have multiple tiers and the hills and valleys guarantee a few blind shots and forced carries. Your shots won't need length necessarily, but they will need to be straight. Each hole offers not only a unique design thanks to the diverse terrain but also different, equally stunning views. To make this formidable golf course more playable for a wider range of skill levels, a 2011 renovation took out 16 punishing fairway and greenside bunkers but there are still plenty there to provide a challenge.

This course is challenging and is playable for the beginner to the pro.
I like this course. It is challenging and enjoyable. No walking this course, you will need to rent the cart. Make sure you use the GPS that is installed on the cart, because of all the rolling hills the depth does not appear what it is. On one tee it looks to be a 100 yards to the gully when it is really 210 yards. You will need to get to the 210 yards if you want the next shot on the green. Have fun, you will enjoy.
Tough but fun
Although this course can be tough, I'm glad they've been making changes for the past few years... The course has taken some nasty bunkers out and even recently completed a revamp of hole 13. The course is interesting with many different shots being needed. Greens were rolling a little bit slower than usual but that was because of a top-layer of sand that was laid down a week before we went. We were late and our booking only showed 2 of the 3 people that were booked, but the staff was very nice about it and even sent us out on our own.
Great Course
I never feel the need to write a review about a course whether it is in good shape or bad. however after my last round here I feel the need. The course is beautiful and I enjoyed it a lot. Finished up the round with a birdie so I cant complain. Each hole has a great view from the tee box and is worth the price
Every hole is a challenge in a unique way
First time playing Champions Retreat and though it was very challenging, it made you think your way around the course. I will be back!
Least fun course I ever played
The course is not fun at all because of the target style. Too many other courses around to bother with this course.
Course was over watered. Slop everywhere.
I don't think the golfnow saved any money, I did get a good tee time.
Really great course for the amount you pay.
Tough course with really fast pace of play and cheap green fees. Which is unusual but its a guarantee that you will enjoy your round even if your ball decides to find the hazard.
A Monster
This course is one of the toughest courses I have ever played.
If the greens are rolling you will have a long day. Hitting the greens in prime locations is the key. If you are not a shot maker please bring dozens of golf balls. You will need them. If you can keep the ball in play you can shoot a decent score. Patience is a Virtue. Please practice patience, have fun and remember to hold on to your scence of humor
very fun course..!!
100℉...!!!
but it could not make me down..
course is really great and gets me challenge.
fairway is above average and green is really great..!!
Very difficult but enjoyable. HOT!
Enjoyable but very difficult. However good value. I would play this course again.
Beautiful
Course is well maintained. From the black tees the course is narrow and quite difficult. The greens are not terribly difficult. If you can find the fairway you will do fine. However, I would advise bringing a few extra balls.
Other Pros: Good deal on a hot dog, chips, and a beverage
Negative: No woods can be used on their tiny driving range unless you hit it < 220.
Good option for $25 Golf Now rate, but I wouldn't pay much more!
I would recommend this course at the $25 Golf Now rate. The course is well-maintained and pace of play the afternoon I visited was great, 3.5 hours maximum. While the course is well-maintained, it is not a great design. It is too tight, too hilly, and the greens are too severe for the average golfer. I knew the course was hilly before I booked the tee time, but I expected at least a few flat lies....there weren't many. Once again for $25 I would play here again, but if asked to pay more, I would pass!
awesome
always heard it was challenging but the rewards can be great. i'm not a long driver but plenty of holes that made me feel amazing. course maintenance was spectacular even in 103 playing temps. greens were great i love the contours as opposed to most fairley flat greens at other courses. views were great as well. unfortunatley the 13th opens day after my visit, but i will diffinatley be back. kinda wished for beverage cart though. this is one of my top 3 local courses for sure. email club got me to finally make it hear wish i had come sooner. GREAT COURSE
Tough!
It's not surprising that I often hear that people hate this course.
It has forced carries, blind shots, uneven lies and tricky rolling greens. My buddies and I love the challenge, but simply expect to play 4-5 shots worse here than we would at other courses. You'll lose a ball or two (or more), take some penalty shots, 3 putt a time or two and that's simply the price you pay here. I understand the course record here is 64...so great golfers can navigate this course just fine. I play to an 11 index and take a few lumps. The price is right. Check your ego at the first tee, lower your expectations for having that career round and you'll enjoy the beautiful surroundings and a very difficult test of golf.
By the way, the 13th hole is currently being restructured and is closed. Set to reopen in the next 10 days. The hole was borderline unfair and the revamping of the hole is welcome change.
Management Change
Played here frequently over a year ago. Friendly staff at pro shop & snack bar. Yesterday, when we asked for their promo clearly written on the confirmation, they claimed that's been over last week & will not be honored. But the 13th hole is still close. Jon I believe blamed their marketing dept. Didnt argue with him. Went to their snack bar & the lady said they dont serve breakfast. Actually she said that they never served bfast. Told her they did before & they shld advertise that on their website. They have a beautiful clubhouse & no food.
Their bag drop staff are still very nice & friendly.
Course is being maintained with crew mowing while youre playing -- not even stopping to let u hit.
If we didnt travel miles from OC, we'd walk out.
Disappointed
Started on back 9 at 10:20. Very crowded and slow. Played 8 holes (#13 closed) in 2 1/2 hrs and quit. Saw a group of 6 playing and holding everyone up. Foursome two groups in front of us was very slow AND hitting 2 or 3 balls. I complained after 8 holes. Would have been nice if they offered a rain check or something. All I got was "sorry". Although I've played there many times, I won't be back and neither will my playing partners.
Challenging but fair.
Nice course along the canyon. Lots of altitude changes. Had a great round.
Excellent course
This was a fabulous course. Only problem was the par 3 13th hole was closed for repair.
Pretty good and challenging
I for one liked the par 3 how it was. But let's hope they make. It better.
OH MY!
This course is in great shape from top to bottom. Everything from the staff, fairways, and greens were excellent! They have made some changes to make the course more player friendly, but make no mistake about it this course is for real. There are alot of elevation changes and many holes require you to hit to elevated greens. The greens are tough, with multiple tiers and if you are on the wrong part of the green a 3 putt is very likely. Be sure to bring your A game when playing this course, accuracy is mandatory at the Retreat. I enjoyed my round and I am sure you will too.
Difficult but rewarding.
This course is one of a kind. Played the back nine and being a new golfer it was so challenging. Lovely greens and fairways. Tee boxes are placed in unique areas. Great mixture of hills, bunkers, and lakes. If you want to challenge your game play here.
