Best Value in Sacramento area
Sunset Whitney is in great shape for mid-January. Every hole has a unique look and challenge. The course defends itself with demanding tee shots, doglegs, strategically placed bunkers, water hazards and fast greens with subtle breaks. The greens are in excellent shape. While the clubhouse is dated, the practice range and practice greens are adequate.
With a 136 rating from the blue tees, Sunset Whitney is a great test for the mid range handicap player for a great price. I got in 18 holes on a sunny Saturday with a cart for $25--definitely worth the drive from Elk Grove.
Nice course & staff. . .
Course was still soggy, but playable. Staff are ALWAYS great!
Course muddy does not drain very well.
Overall this was a good golfing experience. The employees were polite and efficient. The round was very fast. and the greens were in very good condition. But there were lots of muddy spots after several days of dry weather.
Not the best experience
This course has been a recent favorite for my wife and I but our last experience was not good. There was a log jam of groups on the first tee, partially due to no announcement by the starter. The group in front of us were beginners wearing t-shirts and athletic shorts playing from the tips. The one marshall on duty was nowhere to be found and that one group held up about three groups behind them. I thought there was a dress code at this course. Instead I felt like I was at Antelope Greens. Also they need new range balls.
Fast Greens Tough Pin Placements
Wanted to play a different course, one that I hadn't played before. Went on line and saw this course had a lot of openings, I wondered about that. We started on the back nine, first time I had ever played a course with a Par 3 18th. This side was a little narrower because of the homes and had some out of bounds which cost me. The front nine was a little more open, gave you a chance to hit. If you were off the fairway on any of the holes it was tough finding your ball, high grass and wet, couldn't take the cart off the cart path on the front nine. We were not pushed because of lack of players, good thing, we were a twosome and it still took us a little over 4 hours.
The greens were in great shape with tough pin placements and really fast, took a couple of holes before I felt comfortable with them. Also the front nine is tough, have to know where the water is. This is a course that you have to play a couple of times to know where to hit.
Overall I liked the course and will play it again under drier conditions. We just happened to play it after a lot of rain which made it a little tougher than normal. It was a beautiful day and I just don't understand why more people were not out here. Other courses around the area had openings but this course had a lot, maybe they know something I don't?
Love this course.
I play this course alot. Had to play the back first, and cart path only on the front, but even then the course is in good shape. The greens roll great and are consistent. Good value for the money. Friendly staff . I would recommend it to anyone.
Great price wonderful course
...one of my favorite courses. Staff is friendly course is in wonderful condition. Play it now!
Played on Black Friday. Course was jammed. Conditions mediocre.
Staff overbooked the tee sheet. Had to wait for a cart. Lots of casual golfers and pace of play was very slow...3+ hours for 9 holes! Just ridiculous. Group behind us had a $5 discount due to not being able to finish 18 holes. We teed off at 12:35 (30 minutes late) got through 13 before dark (4:45) but no discount. The regular rate for this day was $30...just what we paid on Golf Now so check at the course before booking on G.N.
Played fast and course was in good shape!
We played fast and the course was in good shape. Greens were excellent and fast. Sand traps were raked and very consistant. Good value!!
An interesting course with variety , very helpful staff , and good ground conditions.
I had a very enjoyable day and the green fees are the best
This is to correct my previous review
I posted a very negative review of Sunset Whitney when in fact that review should have described my experience at Woodcreek . I played both courses a day apart and got them confused and said Sunset Whitney was a bad experience. It wasn't. The course and staff were excellent and pace of play was quick with no waiting. I apologize for listing Sunset Whitney by mistake instead of Woodcreek. I would recommend Sunset Whitney without reservation. Please disregard my previous review of this course and apply that review to Woodcreek instead.
Fun Old school course. Greens were well maintained.
For $20 you couldn't ask for more. The only thing that bothered me was the guy with the weed trimmer seemed to be almost playing in our group cause was with us on every tee for the first 6 holes.
Impossibly slow play
We played on a Sunday afternoon and it was so slow that by the third hole one group was teeing off while three others waited. The marshall made one pass of the course with no effect and left. It took us 2 hours and 40 minutes to play 9 holes which is almost 5 1/2 hour s for 18 holes. When we went into the pro shop to get a rain check/refund for 9 holes we were told that they don't give refunds and that we had to talk to the head pro about any accommodation. Two members of our group called and he's never called back. Although the pro shop personnel were pleasant the course pro did nothing for or about the slow play although like most courses they acknowledge they have it with a sign encouraging a faster pace in every cart. Not calling back is inexcusable. It's a city owned course but you have no way to contact anyone if they don't want to talk to you. I don't recommend this course as it's currently run even though I've played it a lot in the past. It was NEVER this jammed up.
Great Time
Greens were true and smooth, everyone must repair divots, close to perfect...course drained very well after huge rain...Fairways plush, great value and a better time!
Old style design
Greens putting well and in good condition. Rest of course average. Carts are newer Yamahas. Former private country club that is now public and what you would expect for an older built area golf course. Nothing fancy just golf.
Course in great shape
We have played this course twice now and have decided that we will play here more often. The greens are in great shape.I love the layout as well. Its challenging .Usually when you have a course built in the middle of a housing tract there just to close but this is not set up like that .You are not worrying if you will hit a window etc.The staff is friendly .Really love it here
Great Greens
Course is in Very Good Condition...
Challenging due to length of Par 4's...
Par 5's - 2 Long and tough - 2 Short and not real tough...
Par 3's are about the same a couple of tough ones and
a couple of easy ones...
Nice Place to spend your golf day
You face many challenges and the layout is quite forgiving off the tees. Mature trees line and rolling fairways. The well manicured greens have multiple contours. There are also strategically placed bunkers framing most of the greens. Staff is friendly. After the first 18, we played another 9 for $2 each.
Previous private course
One of the better values in this area. Raised, undulating greens always well maintained and quick.
Fairways in good shape. Greens not rolled good stemp @ 8ish.
Play on weekdays fast & open. The course is always in good shape. Back tees are long. Weekday green fees with cart are the best in South Placer County compared to 9 other courses in a 10 mile radius from Sunset Whitney.
