The staff was super friendly and the course was well maintained.
Great course to play for someone who had just begun playing like my self
The course was a great value for what the club provides.
We payed $20 for mid afternoon play which included a cart! Very forgiving course. The greens need a little TLC but for what you get overall it's a great value. The club does not provide a course layout with the score card. Most of the holes are pretty straight forward and the markers on the tee help to plan your shots.
First time on this course
A friend and I got a great deal on 18 holes with a cart. It was our first time playing this course, and I knew from reading other reviews online that the course would present some challenges for first timers. We asked the young man at the counter for tips about staying out of trouble. He politely gave us a few things to be wary of and even gave us the option of going off a little earlier than our scheduled tee time. As we were teeing off, another twosome drove up. We offered to let them join us, and then after seeing them tee off we realized we would probably just hold them up and just them them play through. With nobody behind us to push us, we were able to take a little extra time to explore the course. The front nine is pretty straight forward, but there are some elevation changes. The only trouble we had navigating the course was on hole #9. We rolled up to what we thought was #9, but the sign we saw at the blue tees was for #18. (We didn't see the sign for #9 on the SAME hole across from the red tees about 30 yards in front of us.) We even backtracked to hole #8 and asked a group if we had the right hole. We eventually found our way and moved on to the back nine. This proved a little more challenging. I rarely had a level lie. The ball was almost always below my feet on a sidehill lie. I found a few bunkers (there are plenty of those on this course,) and the sand was soft only for the first inch...after that it was packed pretty hard. It made it a little tough to get out of the bunkers. I hit the ball well off the tee (sometimes too well, which left me with some tough second shots) but I struggled to find my grove. I lost several balls over the course of the round (but found almost as many while looking in the high grass for my own!) The greens were aerated not too long ago and had started to heal quite nicely. They were quite fast and I never quite figured them out. Not to mention, they have some elevation changes that provide for some interesting breaks on the putts. Although I didn't score well, I enjoyed the course. The course has a creek that winds through it providing it with some charm and character, it has geese, ducks and wild turkeys, and it allows for opportunities to score well if you can drive the ball accurately (especially on the front nine.) My friend and I enjoyed the course despite our struggles and we will definitely put this course on our list for a return visit (especially if we can get another great deal like the one we got this day!) P.S. The elevation changes on this course are quite significant, so unless you're an experienced hiker, I'd suggest renting a cart!
Fun course at a good price
After having been a private course for a number of years and struggling with the transition, this course seems to be finding a niche as a low-cost fun course in Roseville/Lincoln area.
Conditions are OK - not great but very playable. Greens had been punched recently but they're healing nicely.
Pace of play was good even though there were lots of less experienced / skilled golfers on the course.
Hopefully, things can stay this way. I've always enjoyed Sunset Whitney (what is now the back nine is really a lot of fun)
Nice course, wright now is the time play. Very enjoyable!
Cole and the crew will take care of you. Will make you feel like and old friend. Great value! Go out and enjoy a round you will be glad you did.
Uninformative
The green was aerified and it wasn't informed on golfnow.com website.
Perhaps one of the Sacramento area's best values
This is a beautiful course with frequent changes in elevation both on the fairway and the greens. Greens are always in excellent condition. Get to the green in regulation you'll still have your work cut out to two putt. i.e. They're challenging while never unfair. My favorite public course.
course is in great shape
Sunset Whitney is a FUN course and an unbelieavable value for $35. course is in good shape with very fast greens for feb .
Need Improvement
Nice course, but tee boxes and fairways are need of some improvements.
Great value
Greens were in good shape and challenging, The rest of the course needed attention, but still playable.
The course is in great shape.
The fairways are mowed to the right height. The greens are fast. The play was excellent. As far as challenging, the fairways are wide which I like, but the greens are a little tougher with the placement of the pins. Well balanced play.
Looks easy, tough to score.
Fast, tough greens. Course in good shape. Great course for the price.
older course but with a great design and scenery
the course was in good shape after the cold winter.. greens were in great shape, fairways in good shape..the fairways had doglegs, trees, water drainage areas across fairways, blind tee shots but the course was user friendly for high handicaps.we were very impressed with the layout.
The course, as usual, was fun to play.
The course was generally in good condition, however the sand traps needed some attention. There were many animal and man tracks, which resulted in some unfortunate lies.
Enjoyable and challenging course to play.
You will need to play this course a few times to manage your way around. There are dogleg left and rights holes with some hazards not seen from the tee. Heed the hole diagram located on the tee box to locate water hazards that meander throughout the holes. You will also need to read the greens well since some are rather large and quick with undulations. A misread downhill putt can easily become a three-putt. Since this is no longer a private golf course, denim blue jeans can be worn despite the email reservation confirmation stating otherwise. A real bargain whenever the green fees are less than $25 on the weekends.
Back nine is more interesting
Our tee time was 11:53, but because no one was controlling the the first tee and no one called out names as they said they would, several people jumped in front and we didn't get out until 12:30. We barely got in before dark. It seemed like mass confusion at the pro shop desk.
Staff was very friendly
Nice older course, staff was helpful and friendly, interesting and fairly fast greens, course in good shape especially considering that it is still January
This is a challenging course with plenty of slopes and fast greens. It is in good shape for January.
see summary + very tricky on downhill putts that can roll off the green on some holes
This is a fun course to play!
My wife and I have played Sunset Whitney several times and always have a good time. This time was somewhat different in that the course was extremely wet in many areas. Mud was prevalent on many holes and walking in and around it was a mess. Also, our cart went dead on hole #7 and we had to push it quite often to get it back to the clubhouse to switch it out. When we menitoned this to the staff, we were told that they were having many cart issues that day. Even with these issues, we enjoyed our time on the course. Usually the course is in excellent shape and we had never had a cart problem in the past, so we are writing this experience up as a fluke.
This is a great course for the price.
There are many elevation changes and water hazards which makes for challenging shots. The conditions are good.
