Golfer Reviews
Bargain In Bay Area
Only a few very tight spots ---otherwise pretty forgiving.
More marshalling would be helpful.
Improving the on course rest rooms is in progress.
A good buy for the money mid-week.
Lack of water hurting course conditions
I have played this course many times and had no seen it as dry as it was in December 2013. Fairways were dry and fast... in some cases bold. The greens were fast but in pretty good shape. Some work being done around the course kept us guessing...
Franklin Canyon Golf Course
I was going to pass on playing this past weekend but my friend who's just getting back into playing wanted to come out despite the frigid temperatures we had during the week and the chance of rain. Was pleasantly surprised to see the sun out when we got there. The course was fairly empty so we were able to eat and go out whenever we wanted to. The course itself was pretty dry considering it had rained the night before. The greens were pretty quick which surprised me. I'm not sure if they're not cutting them because of the cold (which wouldn't surprise me given the recent cold weather). The pace of the greens felt like they were rolled not cut. After taking 9 holes to figure out the pace of the greens we were able to adjust. The pace of play was very fast. We took our time at the turn to grab some coffees and still finished our round in just under 4 hours. All in all I really like playing this course and am a regular out here at least once a month.
Needs Maintenance and Very Slow Play
But this is not anything that I'm sure, has never been said about Franklin Canyon before, it badly needs maintenance. Having played Rancho Solano just yesterday, I can't help but see the huge contrast in conditions bet. the two courses. I suppose bec. of FC's good proximity to a lot of people/highly-populated areas (i.e. Richmond/Vallejo/Hercules/Concord/Walnut Creek), it's getting it's share of patronage. The usual complaint about American Golf (the management company) packing golfers in on whichever course they manage is still true. At 11:30am on a Monday morning, it should be a breeze but not on this course on that morning.
Nice course, but overbooked on this occassion.
Booked a 1:30 tee time but didin't start till after 2. Slow going for first four holes, barely finished 9 before dusk. During the week this is usually not as crowded as it was the Friday after Thanksgiving. Maybe all the guys were avoiding Black Friday!
Too Many Players on the Course
Having played Franklin Canyon years ago and having good memories, I thought it would be nice to play there again. Made a 12:30 tee time for 2 on a Friday. Arrived at the course 40 minutes early to warm up. Shop staff was friendly checking us in and said they were 20 minutes behind on the tee, understandable. Warmed up, checked in with the started at 12:30, our tee time, and was told that there were 5 groups ahead of us. We finally teed off at 1:15, 45 minutes late. Played the first hole, arrived at the second tee to see we were the third group on the second tee. That was the way on all tees. We finished the front nine at 4:30, over three hours to play nine holes. We had to quit because it was almost dark. We did get a sixty day credit for half our green fee, don't know if we will return though.
The condition of the course was deplorable considering how the course use to play. It is a shame that the course is collecting these greens fees and not running the place correctly.
This course is in terrible shape!
There were no "tees" on the driving mats on the driving range; couldn't practice hitting driver before the round.
The tee boxes for the most part were uneven; no flat areas to tee off from. Most of the fairways were bare and some had been aerated and plugged. We played lift and place (if you could find some grass) on just about every fairway. We teed off at noon and finished as the sun was going down, around 5:20 pm. Too many people and not enough space in between groups. This is not the course I remember from 10 years ago. It has been neglected for the most part. Too bad...
Course has good features
On Friday I think franklin canyon over booked tee times , It every player weight on every hole, that makes for a five hour ,when a player starts a 11: 52 in the fall you can not finish by night.
Overbooked!
This is actually a fun course that was pretty well maintained with great rolling greens, however, it was very overbooked. Our tee time was on a Friday at 12:22 but didnt get out until around 1, and it was dark by the time we finished. I would recommend this course, but not on a Friday, and i would call ahead to see if they had any tournaments that day which they often have.
This course is heavily used and in need of maintenance.
Very crowded and slow.
While the greens are fast and surprisingly good condition, the fairways need water, fertilizer and grass. Maybe typical fall conditions for a muni, but disappointing.
Good Value for money
Greens in good condition, but fairways and rough areas had several bare, hard spots. Pricing was very fair for the layout and amenities. No beverage cart service offered on the course.
Nice course. Extreamly slow, backed up.
We're waiting on two 4somes after second hole. Too many groups out. Extremely slow course pace.
nice course
Enjoyable course where no two holes are alike. Good maintenance. Greens are super fast and have a lot of slope. Count on a lot of three putts. Scenic and fun. I was impressed.
This course is a good test of your skills
Overall the course is in very good shape the fairways and greens were all very nice. The tee boxes need a lot of work it was hard to get a comfortable stance on most. Greens were fast and true and always had a good lie in the fairway just wish I would have spent more time there
Average Course, Slow Round
Played Franklin Canyon on a Saturday afternoon. The sight of 6 plus carts surrounding the first tee told me that it was going to be a slow day. The pro shop informed us they were running about 10 minutes late and at least they were honest.
This is a valley course with some elevation changes. The hills can help and hurt you - pushing some balls back into the fairway and swallowing others. 3 shorter par 5s on the front can allow you to score. Some longer par 3s and a handful of short par 4s round out the course. Greens aren't overly undulated or fast - pretty average. The bunkers didn't have a whole lot of sand in them - mainly dirt and rocks. Fairways are OK, and the rough was patchy and short.
As for pace of play, there are definitely some back-ups around the par 3s and a noticeable ebb and flow, slow-then-go feeling to the course. Unfortunately, my playing partner and I were paired with two singles playing from the white tees, and they just took their sweet time over every shot with no sense of urgency to get off the tee box. Consequently, we could always see the group ahead of us, but were never waiting on them. Meanwhile, the group behind us hit into our group 3 times...blatantly on the 18th hole as it was nearly dark, and our 2 singles just kept sputtering along. Made for a somewhat frustrating and uncomfortable round, but I wouldn't blame that on the course.
Not anything to write home about but a good deal for an afternoon of golf. Just expect slow play on the weekends.
Pace of play
The pace of play was awful, it took almost 3 hours to play the front 9.. Instead of continuing at that pace we asked to play the front side again and they let us.. The greens had just been airitated, which they failed advertise on golf now or mention when we got there.. I like the course but I think ill only be going back when I know there is no one there because otherwise the pace is too slow..
Great Course
Played early morning and on a sunny day after a day of downpour.
The course was great and enjoyable, the greens in very good condition
Twilight rate is good value for money.
Franklin Canyon is one if those courses that brings you back not because of how nice the course is, but instead entices because of its price point. Solid 3 stars, as some parts of the course could use a bit more maintenance, but greens are decent and course layout keeps things interesting.
Good shots everywhere!
This is a fun, semi-challenging course. It is very well maintained (minus the greens being half plugged). I like that if you don't have a very good drive on some of the more challenging dog-leg holes..you still have a decent shot from where your ball lands. Only 1 lost ball in all 18 holes due to the nice layout and that the golf balls are easily found no matter where you hit them. Scenery is nice, turkey's everywhere haha.
Recommend this course for sure!
