Golfer Reviews
Good layout
I hadn't played Franklin for a few years but always liked the layout. Greens had been half sanded which is actually good. If you hit the right side of the green where the flag is you were rewarded.
The bunkers need some attention. Very hard and just dirt, no sand. Overall the course was in pretty good shape considering late summer when a lot of golf courses in the bay area curtail some of the watering.
Lower your expectations when paying to play at Franklin Canyon
The greens were covered in sad so much so that it was like putting through a sand trap. The course was flooded and the pace of play was ridiculously slow. When we went to tee off after the turn on the 10th hole, there were 2 groups waiting in front of us who just signed up to play the back nine and the course let them slow us down to do so. Highly unprofessional and not reccomendable to anyone.
Enjoyed the course
Played with my son in law from South Africa. We both enjoyed the course. Good idea to aerate their greens by doing half of the green at a time!
Very poor shape. Won't be back!!!
This course is a nightmare!!
Fairways are burned out, bunkers are NOT sand, they are DIRT!!!....YES, DIRT!!! Greens are incredibly slow and bumpy. Last but not least, greens were sanded on the back nine.......with NO WARNING from the pro shop, just a surprise when you reach the tenth tee. This course is a joke!!! The course has potential, but is very poorly managed.
paid full price for less than good conditions
the grass on the fairways and around the greens was sparse. my ball kept ending up sitting on hardpan dirt both on the fairways and around the the greens. the greens on a monday were slow and bumpy. needed too much luck to score so i quit keeping score. almost left after 9 holes but i was with friends. not super bad, but definitely poor for scoring. very disappointing.
Over booked
Extremely slow, my group had to wait in every hole for at list 10 to 15 minutes to tee off , a round of golf that last 5 1/2 hour is not acceptable , I would not recommend this course to anyone.
Still a pasture
Been playing here off and on for 25 years. Every time I go, I tell myself I'm never coming back. Just not a great course for the cost. Layout is decent at best and conditions are always average.
Skip It
Overbooked and slow. There were several marshals constantly going backwards on the course. Must have seen them 10 times during the course of play. They don't do anything but stop right in your line of sight and TEXT on their phones. Add that to the fact that almost every hole had a grounds keepers running around in a tractor right in the middle of the fairway on a FRIDAY AFTERNOON.... OH And they don't turn of the tractors when your hitting. Uneven ground at tee boxes, patchy grass all over the course - Constant distractions, poor food. Its clear the staff is frustrated due to lack of management.
I will not be returning.
Convenient
I like this course. I do not necessarily like the way it is managed. They frequently shove too many groups on the course and you end up waiting on almost every hole. This has happened to me several times.
Average design qualities, terrible shape
The course has some things going for it--relatively scenic (back 9 a little more so than the front), no houses, and few parallel fairways. The design is relatively interesting, though a few holes are not understandable from the tee box. I fortunately play with GPS that shows me an aerial view of each hole and yardages, otherwise we would have been lost more than once. The reason I won't be back any time soon is the condition of the course. I wouldn't call it a goat track, but it's on its way if it doesn't get some serious attention. I sympathize with courses, as I know the economics are tough these days, but some courses are doing much better than others with scare resources. The tee boxes are an absolute mess--not just barren, but horribly un-level. Fairways are better, but have far too many barren and "under repair" areas. Greens were better than either the fairways or tee boxes, though VERY bumpy and with inconsistent speeds. The bunkers are severely lacking in sand. Ball washers were nearly empty of water. The carts had sand/seed bottles, but ours was empty. Range is very short--6-iron distance. Practice green (they have at least two that I saw) is nice, as you can chip--and there is a bunker as well (though it is perilously close to the range with no protection). If the course was in (much) better shape I would play again. But unfortunately, it's not. So I won't. BTW--Round time was 4 3/4 hrs.--not too bad for a 4-day holiday.
Fun course but way too slow.
A five and a half hour round is inexcuseable. They obvously have too many tee times scheduled too close together and there was a wait on every single shot of at least five to ten minutes. Course etiquette was not a priority either -- guys taking all day on their third putts, looking for balls in the weeds for 10 minutes even through they know there are groups behind them, etc. When the marshal came by his only comment was "well, it's the weekend". And there wasn't a cart girl, so everyone was dying in 95 degree heat waiting to hit the ball every ten minutes. The point is, extremely slow playing conditions take the fun out of playing the course. They need to schedule fewer times during the peak hours and add a cart girl. The added revenue from selling drinks and food could offset somewhat the loss in tee time revenue. Neither I, nor the people who played with me will be back there any time soon - and I won't be recommending Franklin Canyon to any of my golf buddies.
Has always been a fun course...
Wind was really strong and made some holes very difficult...without the wind, it is a fairly easy course ...had not played there in a few years...the fairways require some attention..appears not to be getting proper watering and aerating...dry and bare in lots of areas..greens were pretty good shape...tee areas require maintenance also.
You got keep it in the fairway!
Great course with awesome views and wildlife. the staff is cool and the price was right. The course is going through some normal spring issues...a few dry spots, some greens sanded still and dry vegetation in the rough. You must keep the ball in the fairway to score well here. But I love the "funnel" effect on some holes....hit it deep and straight and you'll be rewarded with the ball super close. the par 3's are supertough but make the course challenging. Hole 9 is hard, but 18 is a great risk/reward shot. I cut the corner and was able to get it close in 2 shots(par 5). Overall a great course to play!!
Don't waste your time or money
Super slow round, our cart ran out of juice after seven holes, bartender could care less if we ordered beer at the turn, course is a dump.
franklin canyon first timer
- tee time was 1:08 on sat, took 5 hours to play.
- course condition was ok compared to the courses I usually play like san juan oaks, del monte, and etc.
- for the money I paid, can't complain, great value.
- course was fun to play because it is not flat compared to other courses in this price point.
reason for the slow play is because of the first and second hole. first hole is par 5 and the second hole is par 3 so there was a big bottleneck.
I will be back to play this course again for $35. Thanks golfnow for the discount.
disappointing
I used to marshal at FC, so I know of what I speak. FC has always been a fun course in the past, imo it sets up particularly well for LH players (such as me), but it is also one of those courses that could be great if they sunk some money into it. It has that potential, without question. Unfortunately, the current operators have let it fall into disarray. I can overlook a lot of bad conditions if the greens are pristine. FC used to have decent-to-good greens (hard to read but rolled true), but for whatever reason they have failed to come back from the months-old aerification process. They look and react like they were punched yesterday. Unfortunately, that's a deal-breaker for me. I cannot recommend one of my favorite local munis because the greens are below-par (by any reasonable standard). Worse, they don't appear as if they will be getting better any time soon. If greens matter to you, I would stay away until such time as the matter is resolved. I know I will be staying away, sadly.
The green and tee boxes could use some work. But the rest of the course in inj great shape.
Playing durning the week is your best bet with a Golf Now discount but I would stay away on weekends because play can be very slow. I think persons who play it for the first time and are new to the game it can be difficult since there are lots of canyon to play over and next too.
Bumpy Greens and uneven tee boxes.
Bumpy Greens and uneven tee boxes. Fairways ok. Only reason to play here because it is close to work and can get a round in after work.
Course was in great shape, I had a great time.
The course was in great shape and with a tee time of 6:20 play was fast with no waiting, also avoided the heat of the day starting early. I recommend Franklin Canyon it has something for every level of golfer. The staff was friendly and the price I got thru Golf Now provided good value for the course.
Average at best
The fairways are rock hard on the back nine. Bunkers are spotty, some are good, some have places that are abit like hitting off a cartpath. The greens "look" slow but are not (easy to trickle past 5 feet somehow, still scratching my head).
My biggest reason for not recommending this course is the back up on most tee boxes. This course attracts newer players(won't go into details, we all know what I mean) who are still learning etiquette and pace of play. I'm abit of a snob though, take this review with a grain of salt.
This is a good course for beginners (every hole is easy except the par 3's).
