Nick Faldo brings his exacting, often critical eye to West Coast golf for the first time at this Shadow Ridge Golf Course in Palm Desert. Faldo wanted a design that forced a ton of strategic choices and the architect team of Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt delivered for him.

Options? You want options!

Ten of Shadow Ridge's 18 holes are doglegs. The towering Santa Rosa Mountains serve as backdrop. The tall native tawny grasses contrasts sharply with the white sand bunkering. But it's the golf choices that are likely to seize your attention at this 7,006-yard, par-71 course.

The finish alone is enough to rattle an average golfer to the bone. No. 17 is a 157-yard par 3 that puts the wind in your face and nothing but trouble straight ahead. There's a lake to carry, deep bunkers and a green that slants left to right like a wayward chalkboard. No. 18, a 446-yard par-4, places both a stream and big fairway bunkers right in the straightest path to the green.

"The fairways are generous and the bunkering style is bold," Faldo said. "And the greens have plenty of subtle undulations that reward and encourage a variety of approach shots."

Perfect

Everything was perfect. Wind and the dust storm was difficult but what a beautiful course. A combination of Eagle Falls and Terra Lago North this course is as desert as you can get.

CAUTION, if you can't putt very well, these greens will exadurate that defficiency. You Scotty lovers will learn that even a $400 putter won't Save you

Fairways excellent, greens flawless, tees perfect and bunkers nice.

The price is also great this time of year.

Nice course but outrageous greens

I have a 4.2 index but found the Shadow Ridge greens far too sloped. They are among the most undulated greens I've ever seen and I've played many of the old-school greats for comparison. Yes, Mr. Faldo, we know you won the Masters twice but to make virtually every green at Shadow Ridge akin to Nos. 5 and 17 at Augusta makes for a miserable round for most people. Giant slopes all over the edges with shaved run off areas are also what await at this course. My son and I were lucky to play it on a very warm day that had hardly anyone out there, but in season it must be a nightmare from a pace of play standpoint because of the greens. Think of all the timeshare people surrounding the course who may not play much and then have to contend with crazy slopes on every green. I wouldn't recommend it to others with low handicaps let alone anyone else. Not trying to be negative; it's just the way I see it. Staff were great, conditions were excellent for this time of year.

GolfNow Beware

I booked my round as a hot deal for one the day of my round. I got a confirmation numbered and receipt that I paid. When I got to the pro shop to check-in they did not have my reservation? I was told by the pro shop attendee Adriano that they shouldn’t have allowed the booking of a single. I’ve done a single booking many times. I ended up being accommodated but it took some conversation to make it happen. There seems to be a disconnect between Shadow Ridge and Golf Now.

Excellent condition which was a very beautiful course

Good condition but green were a little slow compared to last time I played here 3 weeks ago. But overall is a good course to play here. Shadow Ridge course’s condition is far way better than PGA Jack Nicklaus which had many brown spots around the bunker and the green. And fairway was a little dry . I highly recommended this course to play if you visit the desert .
