Nick Faldo brings his exacting, often critical eye to West Coast golf for the first time at this Shadow Ridge Golf Course in Palm Desert. Faldo wanted a design that forced a ton of strategic choices and the architect team of Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt delivered for him.

Ten of Shadow Ridge's 18 holes are doglegs. The towering Santa Rosa Mountains serve as backdrop. The tall native tawny grasses contrasts sharply with the white sand bunkering. But it's the golf choices that are likely to seize your attention at this 7,006-yard, par-71 course.
The finish alone is enough to rattle an average golfer to the bone. No. 17 is a 157-yard par 3 that puts the wind in your face and nothing but trouble straight ahead. There's a lake to carry, deep bunkers and a green that slants left to right like a wayward chalkboard. No. 18, a 446-yard par-4, places both a stream and big fairway bunkers right in the straightest path to the green.
"The fairways are generous and the bunkering style is bold," Faldo said. "And the greens have plenty of subtle undulations that reward and encourage a variety of approach shots."

An enjoyable round of golf, with only 1 negative!
A well designed course with lots of sand traps! Challenging approach shots to the greens. It’s in good condition and definitely worth the price.
My only negative ( and I do understand the Covid-19 restrictions) is, there is absolutely NO refreshment facilities available. You must buy enough water at the beginning from a small place at the start. There is a cart girl but we only saw her once ( at hole #17) I’m sure she was extremely busy. This was surprising as every other golf course has outdoor facilities open. This is just an FYI for anyone playing right now, it certainly does not retract on how enjoyable the course was!

This may have to do more with COVID than anything else. Their amenities were lacking. No restaurant open, no place to pick up drinks or food at the start or turn, they only had a cart girl with a few sandwiches, and small selection of drinks. A Mix-Up
I had booked a tee time using a GolfPass Customer Service Representative, and received my email confirmation. However, when I showed up the Course informed me I had no tee time. Luckily, since I was able to show them my confirmation email, the Course was able to get me out about 40 minutes after my scheduled tee time. Waited on every shot during the round, and finished in a little over 4.5 hours, which the course believes is an appropriate time. Being forced to wait a few minutes between every shot makes for a long day.
Gorgeous
Beautiful course, friendly staff, nice pro shop. We got decent rates through Golf Now, which made it affordable. Pace of play was a bit slow, though, but we certainly would golf here again anyway.
Great Course
Course is in great shape. Greens nice and fast. Good challenge. Wind took it all out of me. Course slowed as wind got faster. Pairings could have been better 4 some, 2 some, 2 some, 2 some, 2 some, 3 some.
