Shadow Ridge Golf Club
About
Nick Faldo brings his exacting, often critical eye to West Coast golf for the first time at this Shadow Ridge Golf Course in Palm Desert. Faldo wanted a design that forced a ton of strategic choices and the architect team of Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt delivered for him.
Options? You want options!
Ten of Shadow Ridge's 18 holes are doglegs. The towering Santa Rosa Mountains serve as backdrop. The tall native tawny grasses contrasts sharply with the white sand bunkering. But it's the golf choices that are likely to seize your attention at this 7,006-yard, par-71 course.
The finish alone is enough to rattle an average golfer to the bone. No. 17 is a 157-yard par 3 that puts the wind in your face and nothing but trouble straight ahead. There's a lake to carry, deep bunkers and a green that slants left to right like a wayward chalkboard. No. 18, a 446-yard par-4, places both a stream and big fairway bunkers right in the straightest path to the green.
"The fairways are generous and the bunkering style is bold," Faldo said. "And the greens have plenty of subtle undulations that reward and encourage a variety of approach shots."

Shadow Ridge Palm Springs
Always enjoy playing at Shadow Ridge, one of the best Courses in the Valley. Staff are always friendly and helpful, can’t wait for the next time
A great course with lots of challenges.
I always enjoy coming back to this course. It has a very good practice area. I recommend that you spend a lot more time on the putting green than I did. The greens are fast and tough to read. The fairways were in great shape, but the tee off areas need some work. There's a good variety of original holes. The employees were terrific. If it cost less I'd be back here a lot more often.
Not woman friendly
For a resort course I was surprised at the difficulty level for an average female golfer. The men I was playing with were playing the combo tees and on many holes we were teeing off from the same tees. I have never played at a course where the men’s combo tees were the forward tees.
Would not play this course again.
Frost freeze delay!
Great course, perfect day, slow play and frost delay led us to paying for a 1;30 tee time and only getting in 12 holes. Very disappointing.
Fun challenging Course to Play
The day we played was a tad foggy and damp, however those conditions did not effect play as the course is in excellent condition from Tee to green. It is Unfortunate that golfers do not fix their divot marks on the green. Just a freindly reminder to golfers, Be Kind and fix your divots.
Will definitely play again.
Great course, slow play
Great layout and condition, but pace of play is too slow to be enjoyable. Common to see 4 groups backed up on the par 5’s, especially on the back 9. Marshal not around much, but when we asked about the pace his reply was, “You’re right on pace, so I don’t know what you’d like us to do.” Our understanding from the staff is that the target pace is about 4.5 hours and there was no sense of need to do anything to make it any faster than that. As this is not aligned with my own opinion on pace of play, I doubt I’ll be back.
Faldo
Rode the Greens (6621/71.5/130) first out with Gary. POP slightly over 3H under bright, calm conditions in the high 60's.
The tees were lush and level. Could have been great based on the lushness. However, I could tell from where the divots were on the par 3's where the tees had been in their last 3 rotations because almost none of the divots were filled/repaired.
Over seeded fairways were lush and played firm.
The maintained over seeded rough is thick and about 3". You hope it catches any offline shots, because the native stuff is a probable lost ball.
The large/deep sand traps looked good. Well raked with good quality sand. However, marked down for inconsistent depths.
The greens were firm and putted medium fast speed. The amount of pitch marks is very high here, you could fix 20 per green and barely make a dent in the total.
The customer service from everyone was very good. The drink cart came by several times and the Starter/Marshall out patrolling trying to keep people moving. GPS on the carts is good and the all grass practice range is excellent. Nice restaurant on site. Recommended.
Great time
My wife and I enjoyed our round very much. The staff were very accommodating. The course was in great shape and fun to play.
Low score
I love this course! It works well for my game, and I always end up with a low score. The greens are challenging and have some interesting breaks. A nice shift from some of the other courses we have played in the valley.
Shadow ridge golf course
We’ve played this course before and the condition has gone down.
The tee boxes were iffy and the greens were ridiculously slow for a course of this caliber.
We won’t be spending our money here again
Great layout
Great course to play your first time because it is all laid out in front of you with not much trickery. There are several holes with steep runoffs on the sides of greens but they didn't come into play too often on approach shots. Greens were slow because of recent over seeding but they were in great condition. A lot of undulations on the greens and some of the pins were in "sucker" positions but it was up to you to bite off what you wanted to chew. Definitely would play here again with the proper deal.
Great Course
I felt like I was playing a pro level course through the fairways. They were lush, with perfect lies all the way through. The layout was interesting as almost every hole had a unique feel and sweep. The greens were undulating and challenging to read, but the pace of them was fairly slow. This might have been a problem, but I got there early and had plenty of time to adjust to the slow pace. Perhaps an 8 on the Stimpmeter, but that's just my guess.
Showdown at Shadow Ridge
Apparently it is only a couple of weeks after the over-seeding and the course is in awesome condition. We were very pleased, we can only imagine how nice this track will be in another week or two. Very friendly service, this course is on most “must play” list every time we visit Palm Springs!
