Shadow Ridge Golf Club
About
Nick Faldo brings his exacting, often critical eye to West Coast golf for the first time at this Shadow Ridge Golf Course in Palm Desert. Faldo wanted a design that forced a ton of strategic choices and the architect team of Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt delivered for him.
Options? You want options!
Ten of Shadow Ridge's 18 holes are doglegs. The towering Santa Rosa Mountains serve as backdrop. The tall native tawny grasses contrasts sharply with the white sand bunkering. But it's the golf choices that are likely to seize your attention at this 7,006-yard, par-71 course.
The finish alone is enough to rattle an average golfer to the bone. No. 17 is a 157-yard par 3 that puts the wind in your face and nothing but trouble straight ahead. There's a lake to carry, deep bunkers and a green that slants left to right like a wayward chalkboard. No. 18, a 446-yard par-4, places both a stream and big fairway bunkers right in the straightest path to the green.
"The fairways are generous and the bunkering style is bold," Faldo said. "And the greens have plenty of subtle undulations that reward and encourage a variety of approach shots."

Beautiful resort Photo submitted by MagecD on 10/08/2012
What a beautiful setting!
I thought I was at a Country Club! This course is so well maintained. Beautiful slopes, lush grass, but a lot of bunkers. Can’t wait to play it again!
Great course
2nd group to tee off and followed a slow group for 8 holes with groups behind us backed up. Marshall finally came by and said they were 23minutes ahead of schedule. So what! The Marshall looked at the back up and finally told us to play through on #10.
Don’t think we’ll go back after that experience with the Marshall.
Nice Course
Course was fun to play. Greens slow from overseeding but overall a challenging, fun course.
Good summer conditions
The course was quiet when we arrived (10am) and players had already set out. We weren't rushed but missed the starter so played without GPS. It was OK though. Tee to green was in good summer shape. The restaurant was closed as was the snack shop but wasn't an issue. I'd go back again at this time.
Shadow Ridge (Faldo)
Rode the Greens (6621/71.5/130) in 2.5H mid day using Forelinx. The weather was around 100, clear and calm.
The Bermuda tees were mostly lush, with only a couple needing divot attention.
The Bermuda fairways were semi lush and firm, well maintained.
The Bermuda rough was mostly lush and just tall enough to make you think twice when using longer clubs. Usually nice to chip out of.
The green side sand traps were well maintained with good quality white sand. Numerous traps that appear to be green side from the tee are actually 25-50 yards from greens, so you can get unusual length sand shots here. Some fairway traps are waste bunkers & less maintained.
The Bermuda greens were firm, putted medium fast speed and were mostly smooth. They held approach shots with some run out with hardly any ball marks because of the firmness.
The Faldo layout is fun to play and suits my eye. Numerous risk/reward par 4's that could produce a 3-4 or a 6-7. Two par 4's over 460 from even the next to back set of tees. The par 3's offer a good variation in length and look. There are numerous large fairway bunkers to avoid, but the landing areas on most par 4's & par 5's tee shots are very generous in width. The customer service was good from everyone encountered. Drink cart out and around numerous times. Water stations on the course every couple of holes. Good GPS on the carts. Practice facility is all grass and includes balls with your fee. Recommended = Yes.
Best course I’ve played so far on my vacation, fairways are perfect and greens are only gonna get better
Fairways are horrible
Shadow Ridge has always been a favorite. But this past time was bad. Hit a ball down the middle and you lie sucks. Fairways are all torn up. Looks and plays horrible. And to top it all off they are charging almost double what other courses are charging.
Awesome course
Love this course would play it all the time if I could but I live in orange county so I’ll play when I come out to Palm Desert every time I come out .
Can't go wrong!
Course was in great shape. Greens in good condition. Challenging, fun, lots of bunkers. Good test. Great value would play again!
Favorite course in the area
I had the chance to play several high end courses in the area and I loved this one the most. The design and conditions were perfect!
Back 9 is better side
First off, I played in the summer so greens were not in great shape. They had recently been punched and sanded so it’s unfair to rate them too harshly. I love the bunkering and options you have off the tee. Not an overly difficult course, but fair with very gettable par 5s and a few really tough par 4s and some nice par 3’s. Overall, fun course, nice amenities, great practice area, and good bar. I would say it’s worth playing.
Every year round of golf.
We play here every year and always love it . This year it was very slow because of a foursome in front of us the ranger told them to speed up but they did not comply. But as for over all day it was nice thanks see you next year.
Unhappy
played this course and it seems like they hadn't put any water on the greens in days. Hard and crusty and the cart guy says we came at the wrong time of the year. should have called first .
Faldo Shadow Ridge
Rode the Greens (6621/71.5/130) mid day. POP dragged on the front, things spaced out and moved better on the back, overall 4H, 15M. The weather was in the low 100's, sunny with a little breeze. Seemed hotter and slower than it actually was?
The course is in the 7-8/10 range from tee to green. The greens are still recovering from their recent aeration.
The tees were mostly good. Level with good coverage and only minor divot damage.
The fairways were mostly lush to semi lush and played firm. There are a few hard pan areas caused by the heat that had been recently aerated that should be GUR.
The maintained rough is not very penal here, mostly lush to semi lush and not overly tall. You hope it catches any offline shots, because the native stuff is a probable lost ball.
The large/deep sand traps were mostly well maintained with good quality sand. You need to avoid the fairway traps here more than most courses. If you get in the green side traps, it will be a tough sandie.
The greens were firm, somewhat bumpy and medium speed. Improved from when I played here earlier, but still another week before they will be good again.
The GPS on the carts is good and the all grass practice range is excellent. Nice restaurant on site. The customer service from everyone was very good. The drink cart came by several times and the Starter/Marshall out patrolling trying to keep people moving. Recommended, one of my favorite public layouts in the greater Palm Springs area.
Shadow Ridge (Faldo)
Rode the Greens (6621/71.5/130) with caligolfer1031, adigitalg87 and HmtGolfGuy in 4H, 20M early morning. We then broke for lunch and came back for an afternoon round. The weather was in the mid 90's, muggy and sunny with a little breeze. Thanks to Greg, Gus and Ron for a fun 36 holes!
One of my favorite Palm Springs area public layouts. Fairly tame from tee to green if you can avoid dozens of large fairway bunkers. No significant forced carries and not an overly significant amount of water hazards. However, the nuances of the green complexes are well above average in difficulty. Except for the greens, the course was in pretty good shape but beginning to show signs of the daily 100 degree temps that has been prevalent locally.
The tees were mostly good. Level with good coverage with only minor divot damage.
The fairways were lush to semi lush with a few hard pan areas caused by the heat that had been recently aerated.
The rough was mostly lush to semi lush and not overly penal.
The sand traps were mostly well maintained with good quality sand.
The greens were poor showing visible signs of their recent aeration. Firm, bumpy and slow.
The customer service from everyone was excellent. Marshall out patrolling trying to enforce POP and the drink cart gal was making the rounds. GPS on the carts is good and the all grass practice range is excellent. Definitely recommended, but the greens are at least another 10 days from being smooth and medium fast again.
Great Course!
Everything was perfect, except we kept being unduly pushed by the marshal. Why? I think they are so conditioned to push people along, they don't even look at the time.
Just to let you know, we finished in 4 hours and 5 minutes! Everyone in the group shot in the 80's. Also, for whatever reason, the starter sent a two some to the first hole (right on top of us) before we had even got to the first tee box. BTW, there was a foursome in front of us. Naturally we let the two some by but stayed with them until the 15th hole. We were pushed several times by the marshal to stay up with the two some. Give me a break
