Nick Faldo brings his exacting, often critical eye to West Coast golf for the first time at this Shadow Ridge Golf Course in Palm Desert. Faldo wanted a design that forced a ton of strategic choices and the architect team of Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt delivered for him.

Options? You want options!

Ten of Shadow Ridge's 18 holes are doglegs. The towering Santa Rosa Mountains serve as backdrop. The tall native tawny grasses contrasts sharply with the white sand bunkering. But it's the golf choices that are likely to seize your attention at this 7,006-yard, par-71 course.

The finish alone is enough to rattle an average golfer to the bone. No. 17 is a 157-yard par 3 that puts the wind in your face and nothing but trouble straight ahead. There's a lake to carry, deep bunkers and a green that slants left to right like a wayward chalkboard. No. 18, a 446-yard par-4, places both a stream and big fairway bunkers right in the straightest path to the green.

"The fairways are generous and the bunkering style is bold," Faldo said. "And the greens have plenty of subtle undulations that reward and encourage a variety of approach shots."

Shadow Ridge Golf Course

I love this course! It's challenging and the fairways and greens are in great condition. Most bunkers, greenside are very well maintained. There were a few fairway bunkers that were more like damp and packed down dirt and sand and the ball actually plugged if you landed in any of them, which I did. I wound up with side wall and fried egg lies, virtually impossible to hit out. It may sound like a complaint, but the ball shouldn't plug the way it did. Other than that, the course is magnificent and I reccomend it to everyone that plays golf.

Great and varied layout

Great layout with a good variety of long and short holes, but requiring the right strategy. Course was in excellent condition with the exception of the bunkers and there are a lot of them.

Bunkers galore and wild greens

It's easy to see why Shadow RIdge is one of the favorites in the desert. It's got a big clubhouse and a sprawling range. (Unfortunately the restaurant has been closed since pandemic). The course is just as big and bold. The trio of architects went a little wild in creating massive bunkers and difficult sloping greens. It will beat first-timers up a bit, but maybe with a few more rounds, I'll feel more comfortable managing its obstacles.

First rate

One of Palm Desert’s finest. Challenging but fair.

Had a great day in the sun. Playing partner from LA says it’s the only course he plays. I see why.

Cannot give it a five star rating as the course has just opened and the greens were bumpy and slow. This course will be great in a couple of weeks

Pleasantly Suprised

Shadow Ridge is a challenging but fair golf course. Much of it is away from any condos, hotels, and homes, and the layout is terrific. We had to play "cart path only," which slowed the pace of play plus the greens were slow. The overall course condition was very good considering that the course had just been re-opened after overseeding. There are lots of elevated greens that are well protected by large and often deep bunkers. Our foursome all really enjoyed the golf experience at Shadow Ridge.
