Nick Faldo brings his exacting, often critical eye to West Coast golf for the first time at this Shadow Ridge Golf Course in Palm Desert. Faldo wanted a design that forced a ton of strategic choices and the architect team of Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt delivered for him.

Options? You want options!

Ten of Shadow Ridge's 18 holes are doglegs. The towering Santa Rosa Mountains serve as backdrop. The tall native tawny grasses contrasts sharply with the white sand bunkering. But it's the golf choices that are likely to seize your attention at this 7,006-yard, par-71 course.

The finish alone is enough to rattle an average golfer to the bone. No. 17 is a 157-yard par 3 that puts the wind in your face and nothing but trouble straight ahead. There's a lake to carry, deep bunkers and a green that slants left to right like a wayward chalkboard. No. 18, a 446-yard par-4, places both a stream and big fairway bunkers right in the straightest path to the green.

"The fairways are generous and the bunkering style is bold," Faldo said. "And the greens have plenty of subtle undulations that reward and encourage a variety of approach shots."

Great Faldo Course

Make sure you play the appropriate tees for your handicap. This course plays to a 120 slope from the shortest tees. Greens are enormous and very undulating so expect some 3 putts. Well maintained course, but the bunkers could use a little grooming. Sand here is mostly wet and clumpy. A little overpriced when compared to similar courses. This is also a resort course, so there can be slow players. We had to skip a hole around a group of beginners, but the Marshall allowed us to play the skipped hole after our round.

Out of Town Friends!

I just moved to the Palm Desert a few months ago. My golf buddies from Seattle and I have an annual trip to a different region every year. This year, given my move, the Palm Desert area was it.

We played 4 courses in 4 days and Shadow Ridge was the hands down winner! I won't name the other courses because they all received rave reviews. However, end of the trip, all 3 chose Shadow Ridge as their favorite.

Beautiful day

Great design Nick Faldo. Course design is very user friendly, generous landing areas off the tee boxes. Not much in the way of rough which keeps pace of play moving. Bunkers were fine, plenty of them, but good sand. The front 9 was the more appealing of the 2 nines, holes all by them selves and no condos. Now to the greens. What is so about fixing ball marks people. Greens looked bad because of unrepaired ball marks. Greens rolled true, with plenty of break going on. Very good practice facility. Need more courses like this.

Ridge

Course layout is great. Can’t see other holes while playing one hole. Fairways were perfect. A lot of bunkers to maneuver around. Some long and short par 4’s. Back nine layout is better. Greens putted around 10-11. Smooth. Beverage cart was around throughout rounds. Gal was very nice and always smiling. No place at the clubhouse to get a drink or snack after 4. That was the only negative.

No marshall

We have played this course before and love the course but the pace of play was painful. 4 hours 40 min group in front of us had no one in front of them and no Marshall to push them along. There is no restaurant it has been closed for years. There is a lunch counter but that is all. Nice course and great practice area but lacking some of the amenities I would expect at this price point.

Shadow Ridge

Superb layout and challenging course. Course in good shape EXCEPT the greens. slow and bumby. Greens desperately need maintenance from volume of play. That diminishes value significantly. The layout is so good though that I would still recommend and return. It’s fabulous course and owners need to be more responsible for its care on greens

Marriott Shadow Ridge Golf Course

Shadow Ridge is one of the nicest courses in the desert.

The entire course is so lush and green, it's just a feast for the eyes. The course was in immaculate condition. The greens were fast and running true. The sand bunkers were in great condition! The course has some easy holes and then some very challenging holes. Many of the greens were undulating or had 2 levels. There are also plenty of holes where water comes into play. All in all the course is both forgiving and unforgiving at times, but fair. I recommend this course to everyone. I did play with my wife and another twosome. While I wouldn't consider it a drawback, the forward white tees maybe be a little long at 5158 yards for women like my wife. However, she loves the course and managed the length just the same.
