Shadow Ridge Golf Club
About
Nick Faldo brings his exacting, often critical eye to West Coast golf for the first time at this Shadow Ridge Golf Course in Palm Desert. Faldo wanted a design that forced a ton of strategic choices and the architect team of Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt delivered for him.
Options? You want options!
Ten of Shadow Ridge's 18 holes are doglegs. The towering Santa Rosa Mountains serve as backdrop. The tall native tawny grasses contrasts sharply with the white sand bunkering. But it's the golf choices that are likely to seize your attention at this 7,006-yard, par-71 course.
The finish alone is enough to rattle an average golfer to the bone. No. 17 is a 157-yard par 3 that puts the wind in your face and nothing but trouble straight ahead. There's a lake to carry, deep bunkers and a green that slants left to right like a wayward chalkboard. No. 18, a 446-yard par-4, places both a stream and big fairway bunkers right in the straightest path to the green.
"The fairways are generous and the bunkering style is bold," Faldo said. "And the greens have plenty of subtle undulations that reward and encourage a variety of approach shots."

Beautiful resort Photo submitted by MagecD on 10/08/2012
The course was well put together
Right from the start the course says come bring your best game...it is beautiful and difficult at the same time ..it will sneak up on you and bite....lots of fun to play...
Nick Price Designed
We enjoy playing this course every time we are in the area. The resort is beautiful.
Challenging course and the wildlife exceptional.
If you are playing multiple courses while in the Palm Desert area I highly recommend you consider this course.
Back nine
Front nine was in really great shape. Back nine just re opened and is still coming around. The back nine greens were heavily sanded and extremely slow and bumpy. Over all this is a great layout that's fair and well bunkered
Great practice facility
The course itself is just bouncing back from bunker repairs, however the practice facility is worth the price of a round of golf. Great practice putting green with the small holes for short putting and a fantastic piching area for shots from 55-110 yards with 6 or 7 pin positions on 2 or 3 greens.
Take it with a grain of salt
The unfortunate thing about this fabulous course is the major renovations it is currently undergoing. I've played Marriott Shadow Ridge several times and have always enjoyed it. Currently, food and beverage service is limited and the course is showing scars from where improvements have been made. They still have great inside staff in the pro shop and The Grill. I look forward to playing again on my next trip south.
It's challenging with nice greens.
The course was in great shape. Nice greens. the practice facility was awsome and imagine that someone put in a special place to use the wedges. Very nice. It's challenging and interesting to play. A Must Play.
excellant fairways
golf now has to let us know if the course we play ha s a full 18 open or is it just the nine
9 Holes only
The course is in very good condition, the only problem is that the front 9 is closed due to some construction taking place and will be for a while. Had to play the back 9 twice.
Good Looking & Fun Course
The course is in a resort setting. Club house looks top notch. Driving Range is very flat for consistent stance, grass / not mats, and has a wedge range area!!! First time I have seen one. I played my own combo between Green and Gold. Fairways are wide enough and on the slightly forgiving side. But wind kicked up and does accentuate a fade / draw. Greens were firm but rolled true. Bunkers had average sand. Many holes have gorgeous water hazard. The water is clear / clean....no algae at this place. Is suppose to be a resort and feels like a resort. Coming back again.
great shade for sunny days
A challenging but not overwhelming course. Excellent practice facilities, excellent staff. Has well situated mature trees for shading during those hot sunny days.
Nice course, great summer price
Great hospitality, late afternoon golf in the middle of summer locals hidden gem, Can't wait to play again!! Thanks
Bunkers Galore
Bunkers at the 200 yd mark is unforgivable from a design and player fairness perspective. Most fairways are severely sloped especially when you hit your approach shot to the green. The course layout will unfortunately take a good shot and turn it into a bad shot. Greens had many undulations which makes single putts very rare. The tee boxes weren't bad and offered many options based on skill level. Glad to say that water was available on even holes. It would be nice to have ice making machine on some of the even holes. This is very important because of the heat in July.
Pin Seekers wanted
While the fairways graciously accept most decent drives (let us not mention foul drives) they require navigation through undulations around or over bunkers in order to set up a promising approach.
The slope of the greens require high trajectory and the undulations accuracy or else be ready to be on the money getting up and down or lagging. Beware of prospective three-putts.
I appreciate the variety and adornment of this course, the wonderful staff and the well kept fascilities. Thank you Nick Faldo, Shadow Ridge and Marriot for a fun round.
Great Course - Need crowd control
Great course, but they have a real issue with the hotel guest walking onto the course. There were kids playing baseball on the 17th green, people sun tanning on the green and a football game in the middle of the 18th fairway! I am sure Faldo would not be happy he designed a course for anything else but golf. Staff didn't seem to care.
Interesting Course
Played with another couple. Course feature many deep bunkers which posed a challenge to the ladies.
Course in good condition, greens were a good speed and pace of play was good
Excellent layout...great variety of holes
Challenging but not ridiculous like some courses... Short par 4s look easy but can bite you... Reachable par 5s are nice to see... Will play again soon.
Course in great shape.
Had 6:00 AM tee time. Played under 4 hours. Course in great shape. Heat was not a problem.
fun golf course
This is a fun golf course to play, solid par 3's good mix of interesting par 4's &5's, greens roll true, overall a great course I'll most definitely be back
Awesome desert course
Lots of great holes, challenging yet not unfairly so. Definitely worth a trip out to the desert. Very friendly staff and one of the best practice facilities I've ever seen.
Good value
Great location. Great value in summer. Played in late May. Good challenge and good condition.
