Colonial Heritage Club
About
Colonial Heritage Golf Club offers the only Arthur Hills-designed layout in Williamsburg, and it is also the city's only gated golf community. Golfers looking for a place where they can just 'grip it and rip it' will be out of luck on this course, which requires skill and strategy. It is a thought-provoking design where golfers will want to weigh all of the risk and reward options first. The layout plays through deep ravines that provide interesting changes in elevation. The golf course also features undulating fairways and large, fast greens that are bordered by strategically placed bunkers as well as water hazards that come into play on several holes. Colonial Heritage G.C. definitely provides a good challenge, even for a seasoned player, but beginners shouldn't feel too intimidated. The golf course offers some room for error and the risk-reward opportunities appeal to low and high handicappers alike.

Look at this, where do I hit the ball Photo submitted by Douglas5507193 on 10/16/2013
Great Course
This course was in very good shape. The greens rolled well, and the sand in the bunkers was playable. Several excellent risk/reward tee shots: #5 to carry the native grass to the second fairway. Early in ththe back 9 is a drivable par 4 that will swallow your ball if you miss left or right. There are several other holes that make you think, rather than always pulling your longest club and swinging away.
Only issue was a group of senior ladies ahead of us. Very nice ladies (we chatted at the turn), but they played very slowly and seemed to really enjoy strolling slowly to their balls from the greens to their carts.
Service was great, water for drinking was plentiful, and the course was fun. It was a great day and we’ll be back on our next visit.
Not a retirement course!
Challenging would do it again. Greens had been arreated a week ago, not perfect when we played still provided challenges and worth the price
Very nice layout.
Course has a very challenging layout. Greens were 10 days+/- post aeration so they were bumpy as expected. Course was upfront about aeration having happened. Ran a special with cart, range balls, round, a beer and hot dog for $35.00. Would recommend to,all, golfing friends. Definitely a must play if younger visiting the Williamsburg area.
Must Play!
Absolutely gorgeous course!!! Worth the time and the value can't be beaten. For my money, yard for yard, the best public course in Williamsburg!
Always a Winner
Colonial Heritage never disappoints. Always in great condition and a tough but fair track.
Colonial Heritage
Great track by Arthur Hills. Great conditions with fast greens. Friendly staff. Will be back next time we are in the area!
Great golf course
Everything about this course is fantastic. The design of the golf course, the condition of the course, and the pace of play are everything you could want in a golf course. The fact that the green fees are so reasonable is just an added bonus. The staff are friendly and helpful. We come to Williamsburg once a year and play this course each time. Highly recommend.
Review of Colonial Heritage
We enjoyed the course. There are quite a few blind shots that even a yardage book might not help. We would definitely play it again and would need a couple of rounds if we were in a tournament. It was in excellent condition.
Colonial Hertiage Golf Club
Great course and great lay out! Fast greens and felt like I was at a country club a private one. Greens were like glass.Very long course from the tips! Rough was great the bunkers were too. From LI Ny and definitely a mist play in the area!
Nice course find
A really tough but amazing course. If you can't strike the ball fairly well and are a shot maker, swallow your ego and play-up to enjoy this technical course. That said- Played On a Saturday am; weather was light on-off again rain. Even in wet, soft conditions, course layout was very challenging. This is not a forgiving course for high handicapper, long hitters. Bring extra balls if you can't check your ego! Tight fairways and small greens. Course is in great condition- greens true & fairways well maintained. Beautiful visuals if you love nature.
Can't wait to re-visit and play again.
Buy the course yardage card.
Fun course with some nice elevation changes. Lots of blind tee shots. Only complaint was no maps of holes on card or tee boxes. Couldn't get golf now gps/maps to work so played the course blind. Hooked up with a member for a couple of holes and he was helpful.
Great Layout
Great course, in excellent condition, friendly staff. Can't wait to be back there
Unprecedented Value
*This is an updated review. For more thoughts on this course, see my full review from 6/02/17*
While the hot and dry summer weather has burnt out many other courses in the area, Colonial Heritage remains largely unaffected and unchanged since my first visit back in June. When I first played, the greens were a bit sandy from aerification but this time around they had merely been “pin-pricked” and from a distance you couldn’t tell anything had happened to them. In fact, playing this course will make you wonder why there’s such a fuss about aerification from golfers and maintenance crews alike. Colonial Heritage does such a good job at it that on both occasions that I played, putts rolled as fast and smoothly as any other course’s untouched greens.
As many reviewers have noted, this is a difficult course with plenty of blind shots, elevation changes, forced carries, and undulating fairways and greens. The course is so well-conditioned and has such an appealing layout, you may not mind (as I didn’t) that you lose a few balls or make a high score (the flip side is that making a good score here feels that much better!).
The staff here is as friendly as they come I was really impressed by them and the amount and quality of the off-course amenities will make you think you are at a high-end private resort.
To pay just $35 here is an absolute steal, this course is worth more than twice that rate even in the afternoon.
This is a top 5 public course in Virginia, period. I love this course and even though it’s 2.5 hours away from me, I’ll be back many more times to play it!
This course is Top Quality Golf
Excellent course! This is in my top 5 of courses to play in the Richmond and Williamsburg area!
Big Challenge!!
This is a much tougher course than the rating indicates. I'm an average female player. Yes, it was the first time I played it, but even a good shot was not rewarded by this course. No flat lies on any of these narrow fairways, multi-tiered and/or elevated greens. Too many blind shots due to the hills and gullys on this course. Make sure you bring plenty of balls, because you'll lose many. This round was not fun or relaxing at all. I will not be back for a long time, if ever.
Reputation Well-Deserved
I played Colonial Heritage GC for the first time today, and found it to be one of the best golfing experiences I’ve ever had.
It started with a very reasonably-priced booking on GolfNow. When I arrived, the man in the pro shop was genuinely excited to hear it was my first time and gave me a warm welcome. After informing me that the starter had left for the day, he walked me out and gave me a thorough overview of the course. It was a little gesture that went a long way.
The course itself was in as immaculate condition as my “starter” claimed. Though the greens were a bit sandy from aerification, they nevertheless rolled smoothly and still pretty quickly. Tee boxes, fairway, rough, fringe, bunkers, cart path, and even practice facilities were in top-notch shape. With nice electric carts, smooth concrete cart paths, and thick flagsticks, this course really exudes quality.
As for the layout itself, it certainly has a more dynamic character than most courses in the area, making the most of what little elevation change the Peninsula offers. There are some holes with houses in view and some out in the woods. A few holes have a lot of distance between them with some classy wooden bridges that give the course even more upscale feel. There are more than a few forced carries in front of greens and fairways, so keep your eyes on the target!
The biggest challenge for me was the extra-fine, fluffy beach sand in the bunkers which looks great but increases the likelihood of plugged balls and in general gives most players an unfamiliar consistency to swing through.
Sometimes when you get a great rate for your round, the flipside is a crowded course and slow play but I had the course to myself nearly the whole way. In all aspects, this is an impressive course and well worth the drive. If you’re in town to play a few rounds, make sure this one is on your list.
Va Golf Vaca
Course was in decent shape for early in season some bare spots and rough areas but easy to avoid.
