Colonial Heritage Club
About
Colonial Heritage Golf Club offers the only Arthur Hills-designed layout in Williamsburg, and it is also the city's only gated golf community. Golfers looking for a place where they can just 'grip it and rip it' will be out of luck on this course, which requires skill and strategy. It is a thought-provoking design where golfers will want to weigh all of the risk and reward options first. The layout plays through deep ravines that provide interesting changes in elevation. The golf course also features undulating fairways and large, fast greens that are bordered by strategically placed bunkers as well as water hazards that come into play on several holes. Colonial Heritage G.C. definitely provides a good challenge, even for a seasoned player, but beginners shouldn't feel too intimidated. The golf course offers some room for error and the risk-reward opportunities appeal to low and high handicappers alike.

It's not easy to get on the green on the par-3 14th but if you do, you've got a great birdie opportunity. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 03/11/2020

Everything was first rate
The course is in top condition. It plays longer than indicated, so bring your A game. A tough, but enjoyable day.
Great Course
I've played here a few times. Usually it's pretty slow, but I got lucky this last time. Fairways and Greens and Tee boxes were very well maintained. Felt like a private course. The only reason I give it four instead of five is because there are three or four holes that are just ridiculously hard, and because this course is in a retirement community (though you don't see many houses), I imagine that's why I'm usually waiting on the tee box. But, like I said, this time was different, and maybe they're starting to move people along a lot quicker.
Great layout, in great condition.
Wife and I played on a beautiful 80 degree day. The staff was friendly as always, and the pace of play was good. Dramatic elevation changes and plenty of risk/reward opportunities make this course special. No two holes are alike. Highly recommend this course to intermediate and advanced golfers. Only a long hitter would play from the tips. Unless you can drive 280 (260 flight), play it from the blues. I am 69, play 8-10 times per month. I've played it from the blues normally, but tried the whites this time. Scored better from the forward tees but prefer the blue tees for the tee shot challenge.
Challenging but fair
I played the course towards the end of April. I was visiting my former college golf coach who is now the pro at Colonial Heritage.
Colonial Heritage offers fantastic practice facilities. I don't get the chance to play everyday, so it was great having a range, short game facility, and practice green to work on the swing/stroke before the round.
The course itself is challenging but fair and with the multiple tee setup, can be played by any handicapper. The course layout is great offering challenging tee shots and approach shots. There were only two holes which I thought could have a better layout.
The staff were professional and the pro offers some good advice.
Thanks for having us Aaron!
very nice
had some challenging holes, kind of fun
COLONIAL HERITAGE
AWESOME COURSE !!!!! WOULD PLAY EVERYDAY
Very challenging course
We had a great time. Course is very hilly and you should definitely play the set of tees recommended for your handicap level. Many greens are quite large so pay attention to the pin sheet. A rangefinder or course GPS is a grows help.
Great, challenging course
My wife and I played this beautiful and challenging course and it was in perfect condition from tees to fairways to greens. The layout is beautiful with scenic rides between holes. Quite hilly and undulating which heightened the challenge. Quite a few forced carries to contend with. The staff is very friendly and helpful from the Pro Shop to Starter to the grounds crew. Will definitely play again
Course green and dry
Course in great shape. Down to see the LPGA at Kingsmill , so went down day early to try a course been told very challenging . Really did not think it play long , even with all the rain got some movement off our drives and were surprised how well the greens were rolling. Greens make it more challenging than the layout. Multi tiers and really need pay attention flag location. Only thing is love a natural , wooded course and this is for the most part played in neighborhood setting . Like the course thou and will play again when in the area.
Great Course!
If you're going to play from the tips, you better bring your A game. This course was VERY difficult from the back, although there were several sets of tees that would more than likely make this an enjoyable track for most abilities. Course was in really good condition from tee to green. I snuck in as a single on a Saturday morning, and with the kindness of several groups of foursomes that let me through, was able to get a round in in about 3-1/2hrs. All of this was possible due to the professionalism of the staff. The tee time system made an error in booking my tee time, but the staff was happy to make it work and got me in. I would definitely recommend a stop here if you are in the area!
Must be single to low double digit handicap to have fun
Very pretty, but tough course to play.
Challenging
A great GC to test your long and straight as well as short and tight. Recently punched greens took away the "putting for show" opportunities. 2 drivable par 4s made the total experience worth while.
I'll be back.
Expected More Given the Glowing Reviews
The course was okay but I just did not care for the layout. There are too many blind shots. When you just aim at a spot in front of you, there is no feedback. Then you have to locate the ball. Given the quirks in the layout, that is not an easy task. The rough or severe slopes into ravines make it slow going. The $6 yardage book is necessary. A laser is a big help.
Conditioning was fair to poor, but the time of year is a big contributor. I cannot offer an opinion on putting because the greens were aerated. That was not mentioned prior to booking or reflected in the rate. The bunkers were unfair in that the sand is so soft that the ball plugs deeply every time. The course was a mix of spotty overseed, weeds, and dormant Bermuda. That made it very clumpy. I am sure this will improve with time. There was evidence of weed control attempts.
Houses and OB are very close to the fairways although I did not get close to any. So it may be that the routing keeps this from being much of a problem. I think it would be impossible to walk the course. I don't know if it is allowed. There are some steep down slopes and hairpin curves on the cart paths. I would not let a teenager drive the cart.
There is a good mix of length in the holes, so you use all of your clubs. I like that. I guess if you played the course regularly, you might get used to the quirks. I just did not like it enough to go back.
This course is located in an upscale retirement community. It was not near fully booked at 8:30 on Saturday morning. I no longer live in the area but I guess that means there are better options. The folks I played with were not accomplished golfers and they had a tough time. Two of the three ran out of golf balls.
I have played nearly all of the courses in the area, from Tidewater to the west side of Richmond. All things considered, I rate this one in the middle in terms of enjoyment and value.
Very tuff course
This is a very tuff course to play for your first time. Many blind shots. Would like to play it again, knowing where to go. The staff and starter were very helpful and friendly.
Well conditioned but difficult
Don't come out here thinking this is a course for seniors just because it is in a retirement community. Challenging with tight landing areas and small greens. Well conditioned and friendly staff.
Challenging and Scenic Course
Very nice course with attentive staff. Good condition for the time of year.
Enjoyed a great fall round
Lost a number of balls as you could not find them in the rough especially on blind shots - this is what frustrates golfers & slows the pace of play - after 9 holes stopped at the snack shack & they were out of most everything including sandwiches - guess because of the time of year - otherwise it was a nice course to play & staff were pleasant
The Best
From layout to condition its just a joy to be on this course.
Beautiful course
we started from the 10th hole, directed by the marshall. Unclear why, with the result that we had several groups in front of us when we started with the 2nd 9 (1st hole). It's a challenging golf course with elevated tees and greens with a couple of rough and ravines to cross. If you have a bad day, then this course doesn't help you. The course was in good shape with fast greens. Nevertheless, we would come back to this course to play it again. Hopefully with a good score.
