4 some mid wk group
arrived just in time to tee off. nice open fairways with moderate hills and hidden bunkers. Lots laugh and good outing. Terrific place for golf. Due to corona impact, hard to review amenities and etc. Thanks for opening to allow good time
Better Than Being at Work
A very nice experience and lovely golf course.
I know that the management of all of the municipal courses have to make tough decisions given the restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic but there has to be a way to purchase drinks and food during the round. You do not have to buy from a beverage cart if you are unwilling to do so but to have nothing available (especially when you are walking 18 holes) is more of a danger to the players. Has to be a way to compromise and still maintain a safe environment.
Value round
While not the greatest corse ever. The round was Only $20. Which is only one dollar more than the cart fee at my country club.
It is a challenging layout and not an easy corse with lots of hidden hazards. The Lakes 18 is the better of the two.
Nice Course but reservation problem
Nice course. Played the Lakes course today and have played the Vineyard course prior. Unfortunately, we had a confirmed tee time made through Golf Now, but when we checked in they had NO record of our reservation and did not have us on their books. We had just spoken with them the week prior to try to add two more, but they said they had already paired us with another twosome so along with email confirmation also had verbal the week prior. Others that day mentioned they had a similar problem. Thankfully, they were able to squeeze us in.
Nice Layoit
Very enjoyable course with plenty of challenges , but fair to play. Loved 18th
Beautiful course, but not very well kept
This course is absolutely beautiful, but it is not very well kept. And it is hard to find a few of the holes
Great Value
Two very good courses, fair prices, and helpful staff! Golf shop needs some professional merchandising and reorganization!
Lakes
Walked the Blues (6789/72.5/130) on the GK Coupon with GDR23 and 2 nice super seniors. The weather was very overcast and in the 70's.
Longest 4H, 40M round I have ever played, the 2 gentleman we were paired with could be known as slow and slower. We teed off right behind the group in front of us and by the time we were on #4 green the group in front was already on #6 fairway? Gary/I were walking. Gary was in the hole on #4, I was waiting to putt and the riding 2some we were paired with were still on the other side of the 100 yard marker? Only reason we finished in 4H, 40M was we never had to wait because there were 3+ holes open in front of us by the time we were on the back and either Gary or I started going to the next tee and hitting while they were chipping back & forth across greens.
People usually comment about players playing the wrong tees when they are playing the tips w/o the length or skill to do so. These guys were playing the whites, which is over 6300 yards @ RR Lakes. Not sure if it was because the Marshall said something to them or they became self aware by the back 9, but they finally moved up to the Golds. The one guy was over 80, walked to/from the cart with a cane and was hitting hybrids from inside 100 yards... and he is trying to play a 6300 yard course? The Marshall commented to Gary when he was looking over his eagle attempt on #18 that we drew a tough pairing, so evidently they were well known.
Overall, this was about as good of condition as I have ever seen the Lakes courses in.
The Bermuda tees were lush and had good coverage. Generally level with few unfixed divots.
The Bermuda fairways were mostly lush with good coverage. Very nice to play from.
The Bermuda rough also had good coverage overall. Not super deep, but long enough that playing anything more than a middle iron was unlikely.
The fairway bunkers were more hard packed, softer around the greens. Overall, the sand quality was good and the traps were decently maintained.
The fringes/aprons were very lush up to about 5 yards off the green. The greens were mostly smooth and firm but still held iron shots well. They putted medium fast and looked like the cover of a pool table. Easily some of the best greens i have putted on this year.
The staff here is always pleasant to deal with here and RR is usually relatively on time with tee times. The Lakes course is a challenging course to play and to walk. The tee boxes on holes 11, 15 & 18 are a good distance from the last green. 2 big climbs and mostly flat otherwise, but this is not a short course and it's usually windy. No beverage cart today. Definitely recommended.
RR Lakes
Played the Blues (6875/72.5/130) in 4H, 45M with Kassper7, Sixpex & JohnnyGK. The weather was sunny, calm by RR standards and in the 70's. The Lakes course is a challenging course to play and to walk. The tee boxes on holes 11, 15 & 18 are a good distance from the last green. 2 big climbs and mostly flat otherwise, but this is not a short course and it's usually windy. The fringes/aprons were very lush up to about 5 yards off the green. The greens were mostly smooth and firm but still held iron shots well. They putted fast (listed at 13' 10" on the stimp) but did not seem THAT fast. Our group was adapting to the greens and actually making some nice putts on the back today on some tournament pins. The staff here is always pleasant to deal with here and RR is usually relatively on time with tee times. Did not see the beverage cart today, which is unusual for a Sunday afternoon. Definitely recommended.
RR Lakes
Walked the Blues (6875/72.5/130) in 4H, 45M for $28 with Kassper7 using the GK Voucher. The weather was sunny, breezy and in the 70's... there was consistently a 1-3 club wind all afternoon. We played behind a slow 4some and took our time and enjoyed the beautiful weather.
The tees had good coverage, were generally level & few unfixed divots.
The Bermuda fairways have good coverage. More lush than thin, they played well.
The Bermuda rough also had good coverage overall. Mowed down so you could find your ball but just long enough to be a 1/2 shot penalty.
The fairway bunkers were more hard packed, softer around the greens. Overall, the sand quality was good and it was decently maintained.
The fringes/aprons were very lush up to about 5 yards off the green. The greens were mostly smooth, they were firm but still held iron shots well. They putted medium fast to fast with downhill putts almost impossible. How quick & firm were they as they dried out later in the day? On 4 of the last 10 greens I putted or chipped from the fringe and ran the ball through the green to the next fringe. On a few pins, once you got the ball rolling over the crest of a hill, it was go in or stop on the fringe below. 8' coming back was a common theme AD. I would estimate that we combined for over a dozen three putts on these greens.
The Lakes course is a fairly challenging course to walk. Holes 11, 15 & 18 are a decent distance from the last green. 2 big climbs and mostly flat otherwise, but this is not a short course and it's usually windy. The staff here is always pleasant to deal with and they generally get you out very close to your tee time. Saw the beverage cart person several times today. Definitely recommended.
Where are the graps
Played this with my wife today, wow what a nice course and the greens were 10.7 and very true. Loved the design and the condition of the course, Again I am so surprised that this is a muni course. Outstanding is the word for this complex.
The staff were very friendly and one of the starters was from Liverpool, the Everton side so we had a bit of a giggle, he's a nice bloke, for the blue scouse.
I could not wait to play the Lakes course so I booked tee times from the 6th fairway. Again this is trucker friendly course but its a bit tight getting into the parking lot. If in the area put this on your list, you wont be disappointed.
Vineyard
Played the Blues (6730/72.6/129) in WINDY conditions around 70. Played on the RR B-Day month voucher, thanks RR! The POP was excellent, 3H, 50M walking, matched up with David, Craig & Sam, excellent guys to play with!
The Kikuyu tee boxes are lush, mowed close and nicely maintained.
The Kikuyu fairways had good coverage everywhere. More lush than thin, nice to play off of.
The Kikuyu rough is mostly mowed down. Decent close to the fairways, more sketchy the farther you get from the fairways.
The sand traps were filled with medium brown sand, fairly hard packed in the fairway bunkers, much softer around the greens. Well maintained even though the greenside traps were thinner than I would like to see.
The beautiful dark greens look immaculate and they putted as well as they looked. Medium fast speed, firm/smooth and held iron shots well. Better not be above certain pins or you were looking at 6' coming back on putts that seemingly died at the hole. Easily an 8 on the GK scale, these greens are flat out good!
The customer service is always excellent here, very friendly staff. Marshall very present and vigilant in keeping POP consistent. The Vineyard layout is not overly hilly, but it can be a challenging course to walk in the wind. Big climb from 2 green to 3 tee and it's a long walk from 13 green to 14 tee and from 18 green back to the clubhouse/parking lot. Definitely recommended.
Breezy
Played on a normal breezy day in Ventura. The course condition was average with rough fairways and bumpy greens. The layout is interesting and requires multiple plays to get comfortable (couldn't get the distances to hazards). The dog leg par four on back nine with water on both sides is an interesting hole requiring good judgment. The pace of play for Saturday morning (9:30) was pretty good except when we made the turn and got caught up with the groups in front. I think the green fee is a bit high for this caliber of course.
Lakes
Walked the Blues (6789/72.5/130) in 3H, 25M with RGM2525 & his dad Gordon on the GK Certificate, $27.99. The weather was partly cloudy, fairly calm and in the mid 60's.
The tees were okay overall. Generally level, good coverage & few unfixed divots.
The fairways are mostly dormant Bermuda sprayed dark green. Good coverage, part thin, part lush and played well.
The rough also had good coverage overall. The Bermuda rough is mowed down and not overly penal. I usually was able to play even long irons out of the rough today.
The fairway bunkers were more hard packed, softer around the greens. Overall, the sand quality was good and it was decently maintained.
The greens look about as good as I have ever seen them here. This critique is about the back 9 only. they were medium fast, mostly smooth and putted well. They were soft and held iron shots well.
The fringes/aprons were very lush up to about 5 yards off the green.
The Lakes course is a fairly challenging course to walk. Holes 11, 15 & 18 are a decent distance from the last green. 2 big climbs and mostly flat otherwise, but this is not a short course and it's usually windy.
There was a maintenance issue today that greatly affected play. They were SOAKING the greens early morning so much so that #1 was unputtable when we arrived after our approach shots. A good 1/2" of water sitting on most of the putting surface. Every green until #7 had a "lake" some within the putting surface due to the severe watering. I would think this should be done after dark the previous evening to let it soak in and not affect play? I came back and attempted my birdie putt on #1 after teeing off on #18, once it was dried out.
The staff here is always pleasant to deal with and they generally get you out very close to your tee time. Affordable restaurant on site with good food. No beverage cart person out today. Definitely recommended. My overall rating will be lower that it could have been because of the front 9 greens being saturated. However overall, the course looks about as good as I ever remember the Lakes looking.
BERMUDA fairways, BENT greens that have POA ANNUA in it
