Lakes

Enjoyed a pleasurable twilight round with RGM2525 & his dad in breezy, partly cloudy conditions. We were rarely within a hole of another group all afternoon, walking the blues (6875/72.6/130) in 3H, 50M, on their standard twilight rate of $26.

The fairways were firm, quick & had been recently vericut. I usually had a nice cushion under my irons on approach shots.

The bermuda rough wasn't overly long. They had sprayed much of the rough around the greens and many tees so that they looked green, and not dormant bermuda tan color.

The sand was in excellent shape, very well maintained. The tees were decent, better than the last time I played here last month.

The greens were medium fast and rolled well despite being lightly cored around the edges of some greens. The greens were very receptive to holding iron shots. The fringes/aprons were also very lush.

The staff here always pleasant to deal with and they generally get you out very close to your tee time. The marshall was present out checking to make sure things were progressing smoothly. No drink cart today, but there are numerous water stations on the course. This course is a good deal based on it's condition, price and layout.

RR Lakes

Played Wed. 4/29. Walked the blues (6875/72.6/130) in 4 hours with RGM2525, Robstretch & Taylor. They paid $26 to walk, I played for free on my birthday round, thanks RR!

I was expecting to play the Vineyard course, which is in excellent condition. That is what I thought we were paying for in the pro shop. However, their mens club had the Vineyard booked solid, so we were routed to the Lakes, which has recently had major maintenance. To their credit, RR was offering a voucher for a free round later because of the aerification if you paid and played the Lakes this week.

The weather was partly cloudy, fairly calm and in the 70's. Victoria Lakes is a fairly challenging course to walk. Holes 11, 15 & 18 are a hike from the last green. 2 big climbs and mostly flat otherwise, but this is not a short course and it's almost always windy.

The greens are at LEAST 2 weeks from being decent again, sandy, bumpy & slow. They rolled poorly, but were at least receptive to holding iron shots

The fringes/aprons were very lush up to about 4 yards off the green, where much of the bermuda had been vericut and was rough/bumpy.

They have been working on the fairways seemingly for months now. Many fairways still showed signs from previous verticutting and again today they were aerating several fairways. So several fairways had thousands of cores littering them, it was better to be in the rough. Thin in spots, good coverage overall but they are currently in poor condition until they heal.

The bermuda rough wasn't overly long. They had sprayed much of the rough around the greens and many tees so that they look more green, and not dormant bermuda tan color.

The fairway bunkers were more hard packed, softer around the greens. Overall, the sand was in excellent shape, very well maintained.

The tees had also been aerated & sanded recently, so they are not currently in good shape either. Generally level with good coverage & few unfixed divots.

The staff here is always pleasant to deal with and they generally get you out very close to your tee time. The drink cart was out and beginning to make rounds right as we were finishing our early a.m. round. Nice snack shop with great Tri Tip sandwiches.

I know they are preparing for a couple of big tournaments and looking to have the course in great condition for late May. However, the current condition is about as bad as I have ever seen the Lakes course. The exercise and the company were excellent, but I would not have wasted my free birthday round on these conditions had I known beforehand we were going to be playing the Lakes course in its current state. Normally, I think Victoria Lakes is an excellent layout in good to excellent condition and a treat to play. Today, with mediocre to poor greens, tees and fairways

Vineyard

Walked the Blues (6761/72.0/129) in hot, humid occasionally breezy conditions with GDR23. POP was 3H, 50M walking, we only occasionally waited for the group ahead to clear.

The tee boxes are decently maintained. The tee markers have been regularly rotated & divots patched recently, the only one that was kinda thin was #18.

The fairways & rough are good overall. They both have good coverage everywhere, more thin than lush. Both have occasional drier areas.

The sand traps were filled with medium brown sand, fairly hard packed in the fairway bunkers, much softer around the greens. You could tell they were well maintained overall even though they had not yet been raked today and had sprinkler runoff.

The beautiful dark greens look immaculate and they putted as well as they looked. Medium fast speed, firm/smooth and held iron shots well. Better not be above certain pins or you were looking at 6' coming back on putts that seemingly died at the hole. I was impressed that the ground crew had been lightly sanding in old ball & pitch marks so the entire surface was relatively smooth/uniform. Easily an 8 on the GK scale, these greens are flat out good!

While Vineyard is not overly hilly, it can be a challenging course to walk in the wind. Big climb from 2 green to 3 tee and it's a long walk from 13 green to 14 tee and from 18 green back to the clubhouse/parking lot.

The customer service is always excellent here, very friendly staff. Marshall very present and vigilant in keeping POP consistent. Using the GK $36 voucher to play here includes walking fee, range token and a lunch item/drink. Nice range that was unfortunately closed today. The tri tip sandwich is excellent!

River Ridge Lakes

First time here in over 6 months. Walked the Blues (6875/72.6/130) in 3H, 45M with RGM2525 for $17 super twilight. We teed off around 1:50 and finished 18 in almost total darkness. The weather was partly cloudy, fairly calm and in the 70's.

The Lakes course is a fairly challenging course to walk. Holes 11, 15 & 18 are a hike from the last green. 2 big climbs and mostly flat otherwise, but this is not a short course and it's almost always windy.

The tees were generally level, good coverage & few unfixed divots. Good overall.

The fairways had good coverage, part thin, part lush and played well.

The rough also had good coverage overall. The bermuda rough wasn't overly long and not overly penal. I usually was able to get good club and advance at least mid irons decent distances.

The fairway bunkers were more hard packed, softer around the greens. Overall, the sand was in excellent shape, well maintained.

The greens putted nice. Medium fast and mostly smooth, I had a great putting day. They were soft and held iron shots well. The fringes/aprons were very lush up to about 5 yards off the green.

The staff here is always pleasant to deal with and they generally get you out very close to your tee time. Affordable restaurant on site with good food, no beverage cart person out today. Definitely recommended.

Victoria Lakes - greens were slow, bumpy and inconsistent today

Very lush today, almost too moist, kept everything very soft, mushy, and spongy. Grass on the long side everywhere including the fairways. Greens were very inconsistent - some had verti-cut marks, some had the bumps from the punches growing back, some were very soft and slow than others. Could not get any feel because of it! Excellent layout, the new holes still need to grow in, but as you drop down to the holes down by the lakes, it's really awesome. It was also very windy today, but weird enough I couldn't believe that my ball would not move at all sideways, but definitely came up short into it. Had me guessing on the crosswinds all day. Because of the very soft conditions it made it difficult, the greens are so HUGE, if you hit the wrong part you had a lot of work left, as I did! Once again very few groups out on the course so the pace was excellent. I have played in firmer therefore quicker conditions which makes it more fun. Today felt like a chore to slog through.

Needs some improvement. Get rid of Soccer Golf

Where was everybody? Teed off with my old man at around 11, there was nobody on the course. As a twosome in a cart, drove through one solitary foursome and got done in just over 3 hours. I walked alongside as he drove with our bags. After that foursome, we saw nobody else. It was as if we owned the place. Cool, cloudy, perfect golf weather no need for sunscreen, around sub-70 degrees. The course is a bit scrappy in the fairways with the punch marks still growing back and they're letting it grow a bit to protect the turf for the upcoming City Championship, so it's understandable. But also inconsistent from hole to hole, not very even. The greens were firm but on the long side, so, a bit slow than usual, and also being saved for the tournament, I guess. The water in the many lakes on the course looked clean and clear though. Helped my old man get his ball back every time he stuck one in off the edge! If you have never played here, you have to know where to drop it in, as some of the water edges can be blind or deceiving on the back 9 of Vineyard. The greens are HUGE here, all of them. HUGE. You also have to be smart about where you drop them in on the greens as they are HUGE and undulated. If they're quick. you better hope you have an uphill putt with no climbing over the tiers and ridges. The fairways are friendly enough, but it makes you pick your spots as you approach the greens. It can play long, if the wind is blowing, so make sure you get your yardages correct and know how to play the wind.
Driving range needs serious improvement. The balls are terrible, still. They used to have better range balls that actually flew properly. Whatever grass there is growing on the range is sand-based so it's a bit scrappy also.
I HATE the fact that they have Soccer Golf here on the course! There's orange flags everywhere on the course, and it's annoying to see them out there, along with the orange tee markers on the tee. Go do Soccer golf somewhere else. Why don't the soccer golf people make their own course somewhere and do that. No, it doesn't help that the Starter tells us to just go ahead and yell fore if we happen to see any of those soccer people out there if our ball happens to go their way! So ridiculous! What would the USGA think? An empty golf course's income being supplemented by soccer golf. What have we come to in golf. So sad. And the course isn't even that expensive in today's world. An empty course. And there were no big games or events on TV.

Great course, great facilty

I hadnt played out here in many years and was a little concerned that it would be a classic muni but boy was I wrong, this is a really great facility.

Loved the Lakes course. Its challenging yet fair and will absorb even the most errant shots. The layout is fun and the greens are large and in great condition. The course is both visually attractive and fun to play and in surprisingly great condition considering the drought and the conditions of other local courses. I will most definitkly be back as the course takes a little local knowledge to play well. There are a number of blind shots and visual mis cues that can send you into a lake, the rough or bye bye altogether. Overall its a really nice course for all levels and is both reasonable in price and fantastic in play. Great job Oxnard!

Vineyard

Enjoyed a Sat. mid morning round with GDR23, Jamesph99 & JohnnyGk in what turned out to be normal, slightly windy Oxnard beach conditions. It was slightly over a 4 1/2 hour round with all 4 players walking the blues (72.0/121/6761). However, we set the pace as leisurely, it wasn't until the last hole that we had another group within a hole of us the entire round!

The greens were the best part of the course. They rolled great, medium fast and consistent from green to green. Really lush, firm with few ball marks.

The fairways & rough are decent, not great looking because they are mostly dormant/brown but they play better than they look. Expect some tight/thin lies on the fairways, what I would consider normal winter conditions.

The tees were decently maintained, the tee markers looked like they had been regularly rotated.

The sand traps were freshly raked with good sand and in very good shape.

The staff here is almost always running things on time and has us on the 1st tee right @ our 1035am tee time. First time I have played here in almost 3 years, I need to work this course back into my regular rotation.
