The Highlands Golf Course

About
The Highlands golf course is one of three courses owned and operated by Meadows Country Club. In addition to the Highlands and Meadows Courses, there is also the Arthur Hills-designed Groves Course, an 18-hole executive course. The Highlands Course has an "old Florida" layout equipped with plenty of trees and water that tumble across gentle hills. You'll be playing through majestic oaks and towering pines as you take on this challenging-but-fair test. Narrow, tree-lined fairways and small greens demand accuracy but generously the reward well placed shot. The golf course finishes with a tricky par 4. Your tee shot will to be straight and accurate to avoid the fairway bunkers on the left and right, positioning you for a mid iron back into a green that sloped front-to-back and guarded by bunkers on both sides. There is also a lake to the front left.

Rough conditions after the hurricane
Once they do some cleanup from the hurricane the course will be in nice shape! Off course amenities are best in the area, excellent staff! The greens were a bit slow, and look
like they needed some work still, but from last year everything is starting to come around. Ice machines/water and bathrooms everywhere, friendly staff. The layout is fun,
and the carts are super nice w GPS.
So, So
The greens were in poor shape. Cart paths are so, so.
Playing Long Under Wet Conditions
With the daily seasonal rains the Highlands was playing very long. The fairways were so wet that it was cart paths only and plugged lies were common requiring lift, clean, and place conditions. The greens are much improved but we're extremely slow, again due to wet conditions. Tee to green the course is in good shape. The greens were very slow. Pace of play was exceptional.. The rough is very thick & lush and it pays to avoid it. The Highlands is an excellent layout and one of my favorite courses in the area and hopefully things will dry out soon.
CART PATH ONLY
Online course said 90 degree rule, when we get into cart heading to 1st tee cart GPS says “CART PATH ONLY” .
Would not have played at course if known this important information.
Course was wet in several areas so understand why it was cart paths only, just would have been nice to know in advance so we could have played somewhere else.
Sarasota
Recently the greens have improved throughout the course. Greens rolled well enough that I had six one putts. Pace was fantastic at 2 1/2 hours (single). Fairways and the tee grounds were in good shape from recent rains. Rough is high in places so best avoid to that as I found out The course is tree-lined and the greens tend to be smaller targets so it is a very challenging course. The four tough Par 5s are the main defense of the course. Good layout with both left and right doglegs. Plenty of penalty areas and OB put a premium on accuracy from the tees. Sand traps were a little firmer than I prefer due to recent rains. One caveat, the 14th hole ( Par 3) is closed for storm damage repairs that are in progress so I played two balls on #17 ( Par 3) to compensate. Otherwise, the recently improved conditions offer a good golfing experience.
A Difficult Challenge
I really enjoyed playing the Highlands. The pace was very nice as a single and the 4-some ahead of me gladly let me play through. I finished the round in 2 hours and 25 minutes. The greens have recently improved a great deal on all 18.. They were well-mowed and ran fairly fast with a true which wasn't the case last month when I played it. The tee grounds are vastly improved with all the rain. The fairways were very nice & in great shape. Pitching and chipping areas around the greens were in general very good. With all the rains lately the lush green side rough can be very challenging even with a lob wedge. I found the course vastly improved from the recent past especially the way the greens roll. They were good enough for a total of 30 putts over the 18. My only surprise during the round was the closure of the par 3 14th hole due to major earth moving repairs in progress due to recent torrential rainfall. So instead I had to play two balls on the Par 3 17th to complete my card. The GolfNow price was a good value on this interesting and challenging tree-lined layout full of penalty areas and small target greens. Recently improved course conditions make this a hidden gem and a good test of golf.
Nice Layout
The Highlands is a tight, tree lined course with many penalty areas for errant shots. The fairways are in good shape, and the bunkers have consistent sand. Most tee grounds are fine but a couple need TLC. The layout is interesting and challenging. However, although the greens have improved the quality of the roll and their speed remain below that of other regional public golf courses. The pace of play is always excellent. GPS on the carts is great and regular ice water is found well placed throughout the golf course. The Highlands would be my go to golf venue if the greens could be improved.
Decent for the value
The course is great for the value. The staff was great. The pace was good. A little rough on the greens, but once again great for the $20 I paid.
punched, sandy, slow
overall conditions were fair, but the greens are in the midst of summer repairs. id expect course conditions to be much better in three weeks.
Great Course for the money but Know Before You Go
Course is very cheap to play right now and it’s because they only have the back 9 open. Once you’re done with the back 9, you go back to hole 10 and start again. Wasn’t aware until I got there. It was still great for the money!
Highlands
I didn’t realize it from the app but only the back 9 was open as the front 9 was closed for repairs. I either had to play the same 9 again or play the second 9 at another course, Groves, on the property. It was I decent shape but more of an executive course. This type of thing should be highlighted ( closed holes, plugged greens, cart path only, etc) so golfers can make an informed decision where to play.
