Sequoyah National Golf Club
About
Nestled in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains, Sequoyah National Golf Club is surrounded by mature oak and fir trees. Owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee, the course is routed through flowered valleys that provide a colorful complement to the surrounding mountain views. It feels peacefully secluded but it is conveniently located less than an hour from Asheville. Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed the layout. The rolling terrain guarantees a range of different elevation changes but there are also some flat holes. The golf course is a tough test, offering several forced carries over water and severe dogleg fairways. The sloped greens are no easy feat either. Proper club selection and accurate approach shots will be generously rewarded. Sequoyah National also offers an expansive practice area with a driving range and putting and chipping greens.

Excellent Mountain Course
Great course for playability and definitely a risk/reward course. Excellent mountain views make concentrating on good golf shots a challenge at times. Will be back again.
Mountain Golf at its finest
A smaller group of a large golf trip played Seqouyah for an additional 18 on a Saturday. We called the morning of and they were able to find 2 tee times for us back to back. Weather threatened, but held off.
Absolutely great course. Incredible shape. Beautiful views. Great layout. Couldn't have asked for a better time. Ultimate risk-reward course. A few drivable par 4s. And, unlike the mountain course we had played earlier in the day, if you missed the fairway, you weren't OB. A little bit of rough was forgiving.
Great Course - Real Mountain Golf
Being from MS coast were were looking for mountain golf to play and we found it at Sequoyah National. Great layout, great shape. Elevated tees ball flies a mile! Staff very friendly. My wife and I both loved the course!
Could be a great course
Views and course conditions are fantastic but the service is seriously lacking. Long haired gent loading bags was nice, gave us a few pointers. Staff inside horrible, never smiled, did not feel welcomed. Told us pins were zone 2 but never explained what zone 2 was, signs on tees stated zone 1. No balls on the range had to get my own. No sand in the divot jugs so could not help keep course in good shape. Refreshment gal left at 3 on a 90+ degree day, no coolers in carts and since you do not hit the clubhouse on the turn it would have been nice for someone to inform us. Club house closed when we finished at 5:50 so again no refreshments. Could be a great course if the staff does the little things to complete the experience but it felt like they did not care.
Difficult
Greens were in great shape, fairways and tee boxes need work, beautiful views
Amazing Golf Course
Sequoyah National is back and in great shape. The views are amazing and the golf course is too. The greens were perfect, fairways, bunker and tee boxes were too. Bring your A Game because this is a demanding course with very little room for error!
Lots of elevation changes and wonderful views
A beautiful course with a fun but challenging design. There are a lot of elevation changes. It really makes you think of what club to play. I had been told that last year the course conditions were pretty bad, but the new management as done a very good job in getting the course in very good shape. There were still some areas were they laid new sod and it was not fully grown in. But in a month or two, it could go from very good to excellent shape.
improved
Was told not to play this course again. Did so anyway. Was pleasantly surprised. Would play it again without hesitation. Course is being repaired and is in good shape. Views are fabulous. Staff is extremely cordial. Would highly recommend this course.
CAUTION!!!! STAY AWAY FROM THIS COURSE!!!!!
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS COURSE. I have been playing golf for over thirty years and this is without a doubt the worst course conditions I have had the dis-pleasure to play, and I have played some real crappers. You could hardly tell the difference between the fairways and the rough, all the greens were in worse then horrible condition to the point of being unable to putt them. The staff for their part was friendly and the manager did offer to send me and my friend vouchers to replay the course, but we declined because we will never go back to this course. On the upside, there are some remarkable views from the course as it is truly a mountain golf course.
Again, don't waste your money, play another course, any course.
Extremel;y poor conditions
The course was in as poor condition as any I have ever seen. Greens, fairways, rough were all pitiful. To the pros credit, he did warn us in advance and said we could get our money refunded and that he would verify the condition to Golfnow.
Come back in 6 months (April, 2015)
This must have been a magnificent course a few years ago. Management changed just last week as Troon Golf ran the course into the ground. More than half the greens are in very poor shape(the others are mostly very good), but the fairways are being renovated and it's like playing on a lawn. We played lift/clean/ and find some grass - and it worked out well enough.
Many of the holes are spectacular both in the views and the design of the hole. Most have very little margin for error, however, especially the par 3s. I am a 20 handicapper and averaged 6 on the par 3s.
The pro shop staff was very apologetic and warned us prior to purchase that the course was "a little rough". Their description however was inadequate - some of the holes on the front nine came close to the "unplayable" line.
This golf course was in the WORST condition of any I've played
Ive never seen a golf course in worse shape then this one! 10/12/14 for the MONEY and time to drive, it was pathetic... Bare ground tee boxes, splotchy and bare fairways, and 60% of the greens were eaten up
It has beautiful scenic views and has the potential to be one of the nicest courses in western N.C. but they have a lot of work to do.
I recommend CALL for course CONDITIONS
EXTREMELY POOR CONDITION, EXTREMELY HIGH PRICE FOR SHAPE
BROUGHT 9 PEOPLE UP FROM SOUTH GA TO PLAY MOUNTAIN COURSES. BOOKED EARLY IN SEPT FOR LEAF SEASON. COURSE IN VERY POOR CONDITION, ASKED FOR RELIEF ON PRICE BUT CHARGED $65 AND WASN'T WORTH 25. SO VERY ASHAMED TO HAVE FRIENDS TRAVEL THAT FAR TO PAY THAT MUCH FOR THAT BAD OF A COURSE. WHEN TO SMOKY MOUNTAIN COUNTRY CLUB AFTER THIS MORNING ROUND AND FOUND IT TO BE VERY GREAT SHAPE.
This course has great views
Needs to be maintained, the coure is falling apart
Do not play this course until new ownership gets course ready
This course sould not be open for play. The tees and farways are completely gone. The layout is awesome and the views are 2nd to none, but the course has had some major damage due to weather and disease in the fairways and tees. I'm sure it will come back and be a great experience, but do not make the drive with high expectations. Most of the holes are basically gound under repair. The greens were average and luckily the only pert of the course that is ok.
Very Dissapointing
Course was very bad. 4 of the greens had virtually no grass. Like putting on a gravel road. Fairways were patchy at best. A year ago this was a very nice course, but that has drastically changed for the worse. A local Friend informed that the course did not re-new their Troon contract. This could have contributed to the overall course conditions.
Beautiful Views - Wonderful layout
In the last month the condition of this course has gotten really bad. I understand that there is a new superintendent and that they are working to bring this course back to the GREAT top notch course is has aways been. The leaves are on the verge of turning - the scenery is perfect.... putting not so much and have to hunt grass in the fairways.
VERY disappointed
This course had been recommended by several friends. I'm not sure what is going on but, at the moment, this course is in TERRIBLE condition.
When I checked in they did tell us there were several greens that were in rough shape and had not come back from aeration and overseeding...."they're a little sandy." Actually, there are huge barespots on some while others don't have grass at all. Add in tee boxes and fairways that are bare or washed out and it makes for a very disapointing experience.
That said, I can see where the course would be fantastic when in good condition. However, given the current conditions and $75 green fees I would definitley pass and wait for another time.
poor course
the views were ok the fairways were nothing but dirt the greens had very little grass it is safe to say that i will never play there again
Sequoyah National in Cherokee, NC.
Played this coarse 4 months ago and it was in fair shape. Yesterday the majority of the fairways were dead. ie. DIRT. It was so bad it actually looked like they had killed all the grass on purpose. All the tee boxes were dead. They were covered with a black fungus. The greens had been pluged and verticut. Why I don"t know. There was little or no grass on the greens. Once again lots of black fungus coveved over by sand. Bunkers had not been raked. Some of the grass around the bunkers was 2 feet long. This is the first time I've written a review. I've played on Military coarses for ten bucks to beautiful coares in the sand hills. This was BAD. This coarts gives cow pastures a bad name.
