Sequoyah National Golf Club
About
Nestled in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains, Sequoyah National Golf Club is surrounded by mature oak and fir trees. Owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee, the course is routed through flowered valleys that provide a colorful complement to the surrounding mountain views. It feels peacefully secluded but it is conveniently located less than an hour from Asheville. Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed the layout. The rolling terrain guarantees a range of different elevation changes but there are also some flat holes. The golf course is a tough test, offering several forced carries over water and severe dogleg fairways. The sloped greens are no easy feat either. Proper club selection and accurate approach shots will be generously rewarded. Sequoyah National also offers an expansive practice area with a driving range and putting and chipping greens.

Very challenging mountain course in great shape. Very enjoyable
Very challenging mountain course in great shape. Very enjoyable to play. Had a great time.
Course has a great view.
Greens were sanded over and some had been raked but they did not take out the pins when raking and left large amount of sand around the holes. Could not take the cart on most fairways therefor making the cart GPS not useable. We were behind a foursome with no regard for anyone else on the course and more interested in the drink cart than playing golf. No course marshall. We joined up with a twosome behind us and still had to wait on every hole. Finally played aound them missing a hole so we only played 17 holes.
Bring Your "A" Game
Sequoyah is a relatively new course carved out of the mountains in Cherokee, NC. There are many scenic holes, with great views of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. But don't get distracted by the scenery, because to score well you must hit your ball in the right place. There is lots of trouble waiting for you if you get to far to one side of the fairway or the other. The day we played they had a temporary hole for the par 3 second hole, that was going through re-construction. Unfortunately, this is the second time I've played here and had to use this temporary hole. The GSP in the cart is great, and even gives you a fly-over description of each hole. They also provide free range balls, however you have to hit off a mat.
Sequoyah will be a great course someday, but it needs a few more years to mature.
Thank you for your review. We have completed the re-construction of Hole #2 and are very excited about how it came out. We plan on re-opening the hole in the Spring of 2014. Due to the unfortunate incident, we've had to stay on the mats for the driving range this season so that the grass area could be utilized as a temporary Hole #2 in order to provide an 18 hole round for our guests. Thanks again and please come back to play our new hole next Spring!
More scenery then you can stand! Mountains Galore. Enjoy
Very Challenging, Awesome Views. I can't think of a better course.
Course had unbelievable mountain views.
The course was nice and the views were unbelievable. The staff, especially the cart valet, was excellent.
Beautiful Location
The course is very picturesque, it only commands the premium fee due to its location. The greens and fairways left alot to be desired as there were many dead spots. The staff was friendly and the GPS on the carts were nice.
Thank you for your feedback. We continue to recover from a difficult summer of weather with 40" of rain over average but feel as though the course improving. Please come visit us again in the Spring. I think you'll see a different golf course.
Billy goat course
My idea of golf is a relatively level playing field. This is a severely sloped course, seldom find a flat lie in which to hit the ball. My handicap is high teens and unless you are a very good player you will be frustrated when you miss by a few feet and cannot find your ball because it rolls over the hill into the brush. I only got 1 birdie and couple pars. Several of the holes you are required to stay on the cart path--I did not see the reason this was the requirement. So be prepared to do a lot of walking up hill. One hole is under repair and is not is use. Very long course. Weather was perfect. I would not recommend.
Thank you for your feedback. Sequoyah can have some bite to it even for the low handicaper if you don't have control of your golf ball that day. Our suggestion is to play this golf course conservatively. If you club down and keep the ball in play, you'll find a much more playable golf course.
Our cart path only holes (4 in total) are due to severe slopes entering and exiting the fairways. Unfortunately we have seen several golf carts roll over and staying on the cart path is the only way to guarantee the guests safety which is more important to us.
Exciting mountain course with lots of elevation changes
The only problems we encountered were due to excessive rain on course. The greens were spotty and uneven in cut. We have played here before when that was not the case, ie, they were smooth and true.
Two of the holes are exceedingly long given the difficulty of the course, 7 and 10. For the less than average golfer, 10 is easily a par 5.
Course conditions are pristine for a mountain course where roughs and fairways are often more difficult to maintain than a flatland course.
great course needs help
we had a 942 tee time through Golf Now. Got there early and they let us out early as they had a very busy outing later on.
The course is very hilly and the carts do a good job.
The wet weather has hurt this course and it had been aerated 2 weeks ago and had not healed..The fairways had lots of dead areas and the greens and tee boxes needed help. The conditions were a disappointment.
The course itself is very beautiful and challenging and we will go back and play it once conditions have improved.
Bad Experience
This course has been poorly maintained for a long period of time. We expected the greens to be slow due to aerification, but the fairways were in terrible shape and the tee boxes as well. Lots of crab grass invading the course and tee boxes. Bare areas on the fairways.
Great Sights!
We played this course on a Tuesday. The views are awesome. Fairways were in good shape. The greens needed a little attention. Love a course that makes you think. And this is one of those. I don't agree with the comment that you should not play the tips if you are not a 5 handicap or better though. We played one up from the tips. I was thinking this would be a big difference for distance and angle. Not so much when we got there. It seemed that we would of had a better time from the tips due to many of the holes will get you shorter than a pitching wedge if you can carry the ball 240. This is not a real long course. I will agree that you need to be striking the balls here though. The downfall is that if you miss the first rough or on some holes, the fairway, you may not find your ball. Take two off the tee if you hit it in the high stuff. You may want to book this twice if you are on a vacation for the week there. This is due to not knowing how far your teeball on some holes will go with the dramatic drop in elevation. They were still working on the number 2 hole so you will play a temp hole to replace it. You will actually play that hole before number one. Seen turkeys, baby snapping turtle, snake and other wildlife when we were there. It was worth the drive for me!
Some Great Views
Course has some great views of the mts. If it is cart path only then the workout walking is something. Greens need some work but they have had a ton of rain the last month. Glad we played it during our visit.
It's worth the views!
The course has amazing views. It will be awesome in a few weeks with the Fall colors. The greens were in very good condition. However, the fairways had a lot of weeds/crabgrass. There were also bare spots. One hole was closed for construction and they had a makeshift hole in the practice area which was fine. We paid $39 and that was a fair price for the conditions. We played there last year and it was in much better condition. Perhaps all the rain this summer has had a detrimental effect on the course. Also, we are bogey golfers and found the course very difficult. We all agreed that next time, we will play best ball so we can enjoy the experience and beauty more.
Love the view
This course is really up there! Many of the courses holes are downhill from the tee. The views are great. The course is fairly well maintained during the season. I have played here before in greater but also in less than desireable conditions. My group plays from the (silver) white tees usually and a few of us were hitting par 4 greens in 1 shot from the higher boxes. Free range balls are nice. Only catch was they had heavy rain this season and the second hole had been washed away. The course used the driving range practice green as a replacement which was fine.
Amazing vistas
This course is very challenging and not for the beginner or players with bad knees as most of the holes are cart path only and the terraine is mostly steep grades. If you are up to the challenge, you must play this course as it is worth the pain. I can't wait to go back and play when the leaves turn as there will be amazing views at most every hole.
The Mountain views at this course far outweigh the conditions which are being addressed.
Except for the fact that you have to start on a temporary Par 3 (hole #2 is being repaired from a washout), the mountain scenery is spectacular ! The course is only 4 years old so there are still some rough spots in the fairways and a lot of dead spots on the greens. In speaking with one of the staff, they will be replacing the grass on the greens with a new strain that will be more receptive to the rainy climate in this area. The changes in elevation from hole to hole is spectacular !
Very nice course and challenging.
Very nice course with some extremely challenging holes. Course was in good condition considering all of the rain the area has had. Course was crowded and there was a wait on every hole.
Awesome experience - amazing views
I'm from Florida, so this layout was really fun for me. The course is in the mountains, so almost every hole has an uphill or downhill shot. The views from some of the holes are amazing. I had to stop and take a few pictures with my playing partner frequently. the course itself was in excellent condition. There was some ground under repair on a few holes but this really didn't impact the round at all.
Much Too Mountainous!
Although I'd played here before, I'd forgotten how mountainous this course really is. They have many holes where it's cart path only and walking down to your ball and back up again can be a real pain!
Unless you've played here before, it's tough to gauge what club to hit on many tee shots. If to hit too much club, they ball goes flying into no-man's land. If you don't hit enough club, it also can go into no-man's land.
It's an easy course to shoot a very big number! Not so much fun!
This course is very challenging, even more your 1st time around.
You will not fine a course with more beautiful views, however some of the yardage is misleading. Staff needs a little more experience on the maintaining of the greens, sand traps and the water coolers. I would suggest yardage sign for the lay up points would also help 1st timers and speed up the rounds.
Thank you for your review. We apologize you ran in to some issues with our top dressing of the greens on Monday. Our practices are only in the best interest of the golf course and it's playability.
We do have four holes that are always cart path only (3,4,5 & 15) due to the severe slopes. Golf cars can roll very easily on these holes and we keep the carts off of them for the safety of our guests.
We strive to make improvements and a better experience for our guests so thank you again for your feedback.
