Great Layout needing attention
Wonderful layout and greens but fairways and course maintenance was lacking. Weeds everywhere.... Traps not raked in ages. Course has potential for 4.5 rating and shame in allowing maintenance to underperform.
Such Potential
This course has such potential. It sits on a great piece of property in a valley in North Georgia mountains and is a wonderful layout. Unfortunately, it's just not being maintained. The fairways have either very thin grass or are covered with clover or other weeds. The traps are poorly manicured and while the bent greens were in relatively good shape, there were some early signs of some impurities beginning to grow in. Entering the course from the public entrance, you drive by what appears to be an area that is intended for home sites. Hopefully, that will occur and some funds can be pumped into this course before it's too late.
Found course layout to be enjoyable and challenging. Would love to play again.
Course in good condition. Greens ok. Staff friendly accommodating.
needs water
A tough Course with great greens, But the Fairways need water badly. I bought a course tip book, but found that I had to put on my Glasses to read the small print while out on the course
Good value and fun to play
I played the white tees.
Old Union is my local preferred course. It is a "valley" course in the mountains. The owners are putting some money into the course as is evidenced by its grooming and conditioning over past years. They have added drinking water on every 3rd hole as well.
Fairways are "furry" and do not give much added yardage from the tee. Greens are slow as should be expected for public access courses.
It is a "what you see is what you get" on the front nince with the only head scratcher being #9. A creek crosses the fairway at about 200 yards off the whites. So you either have to be a big hitter to clear the creek (250+/- yd carry) or count on a 200 yd second shot to a green that is accessable IF you are in the right spot off the tee.
Some local knowledge is necessary for a few holes on the back 9. #10 (par 5) has streams crossing the driving area in three places. Club selection and shot making ability are a plus. #11 is a short par 4 requiring a good drive to the right (close to or over a tree line) to avoid a bunker in the middle of the fairway on the other side of a crossing stream.
#12 is another head scratcher off the tee. A non-active stream bed crosses the fairway in the ideal landing spot... so choose wisely off the tee. It is possible to drive across the stream bed if you are a long and straight hitter. The crossing stream bed marks about 170 yards to the green, which is very open and accessable.
The balance of the back 9 is a "what you see is what you get" course.
The course is a very fun venue with acceptable conditioning for a public play course.
Take your Range Finder for spot to pin distances. Not many marked sprinkler heads.
Challenging - has sand traps and water.
Has to have good course management knowledge to avoid hazards and the water. I love the layout of the course.
I'd really appreciate any course maintenance to proceed against player traffic. Playing golf with a mower for 5 holes is the pits.
Old Union Blairsville
The front nine needs more grass and what is there has not come out yet. A lot has to be done for the fairways to grow in! I will play again in 2 months to check on progress!
Love playing here
This is a great golf course! I always enjoy playing it. The layout of the course is great. Lots of sand and quite a bit of water.
Great Course, Great Challenge
This is a great course to play, and well worth the drive into the N. Georgia Mountains. There are some challenging holes and the yardage from the Blue tee's ensures you have to be on your game. From the Championship Tee's even more challenging with Par 3's 300 plus yards. No slouching here, and on some holes miss hits penalize you. Par 3's 220 plus and Par 5's 600 plus yards from the Blue's. Love the challenge, and a course you want to go back to as you play better with more course knowledge. But no matter how you play, you will not find a more beautiful setting with spectacular scenery and back drops to frame your pictures.
Flat and fun
Who knew there was a flat course in North Georgia? Can't wait to play again when everything is green.
The greens were soft and moderately fast and in good shape.
Despite being flat, bunkers are everywhere, water on most holes and the course is long, making this a challenging course.
Love this course and will be back soon.
Worth the drive
The course was in pretty good shape considering the time of year. The fairways were somewhat bare but again it was January. The greens were very slow and I had a difficult time making myself putt the ball firm enough to get to the hole. The back 9 has a couple of tricky holes but after playing the course a few times one can learn where to hit off the tee.
I was a single and the locals allowed me to play through several times. To a person they were very friendly and cordial.I would recommend this course.
Good layout, terrible surface
The soil beneath the grass at this course is extremely hard, so much so that it is difficult to penetrate with a tee. It does, however, produce significant roll for extra yardage. While I would not play this course again, a plus is the practice facility and range, which is top rate.
Old Union Review Old Golfer
Very slow greens. Very thick rough, Lots of sand traps, above average length.
Great Course challenging layout
The course is fun to play with a challenging layout. Staff were very friendly. Driving range and practice area available.
Old Union
Course was in good shape for this time of year. Fairways are dormant but that is to be expected. The greens are very healthy and roll really well
Links style
Considering how abnormally dry it's been the fairways and greens were in good condition. It has above average length, is fairly challenging and has nice scenery. My only real complaint would be that its not marked well. No description of layout, hazards, etc. on the score cards or at tee box's. The club house will provide you with a diagram, if requested, buts it's not much help. AS SUCH for first timers it can be frustrating and you need to bring plenty of balls.
