Carolina National Golf Club - Heron Nine
About
Situated along the banks of the Lockwood Folly River, Carolina National Golf Club takes advantage of the scenic low country landscape. The 27-hole course was designed by Fred Couples, whose preservation of the terrain earned the course the certification as an Audubon Sanctuary. The golf course is divided into three nines that are played in 18-hole combinations. The Heron, Egret, and Ibis are named after the birds that call the course home. Each nine offers a different set of challenges. The Heron is both the most scenic and the longest nine. The three par 4s all measure over 400 yards and the final hole is a par 5 that is 587 yards long. The layout has a few holes that play along the river, including the par-3 fifth, which has a green that is almost entirely surrounded by water. This nine will reward strong mid-to-long iron play.

Nice layout
Overall, enjoyable round despite the average conditions of the turf on both greens and fairways. The course layout is challenging and very interesting with several signature holes. We played the blue tees which is about 6000 yards on the scorecard but like many courses in this area, it played longer, being at sea level with limited roll. By far the biggest draw is the course design.

Pace of play
The course was in great shape, greens rolled true, everything about our experience playing at Carolina National was stellar with one small exception, pace of play. As I find in most of the Carolinas there is no concept of a ranger to keep groups on track, it’s too bad because what could have been a wonderful experience turns into a tedious hit and wait game.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are sorry to see that your overall experience was anything short of 5 stars, but we hope you'll give us another try in the near future.

Nice walkable course
Egret/Ibis was in excellent shape today. The greens and fairways are in excellent form, but the bunkers are short of sand and in bad shape. This is a walkable course if you don't mind some rather long walks between holes.

Overall Amazing Experience
I play Carolina National often, and am always amazed with their superior customer service. The bag drop crew always are so welcoming , friendly and professional, and the pro shop is efficient and makes you feel like you are valued to be there.
The course itself is fantastic. Amazing views, a good mix of challenging hole and birdie opportunities. The greens have been worked on recently and I was impressed with how quickly they have returned to great shape.

Excellent Condition
Played early, greens were moderate while the dew was fresh but rolled nicely when they started to dry out. Course was in great shape!

Everything was good to excellent except for the cart path, which was a disaster. Badly needs repair.

The Good and the Bad
Good: Fantastic layout with a number of beautiful holes. The Staff is very friendly with great service.
Bad. Like a number of reviews. The course conditions are terrible right now. Most greens tees and fairways are very bad. The cart paths are pathetic. Thankfully Club car makes a great cart that can take the abuse. So I would skip Freddies until the fall. Maybe then the condition will improve.

The course needs to be in better shape at this time of year
The course needs to be in better shape at this time of year. We really enjoy the three nines and Carolina National but for some reason the fairways are thin and the greens are not rolling smoothly and have some weeds on many of the greens. Other area courses are in better shape at this time.
Hello, Dgoff55. Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are sorry to see that your overall experience was anything short of 5 stars, but we hope you'll give us another try in the near future.
Should be in better shape
Carolina National is one of our favorite spots to play golf in Brunswick County. We played Aaron Charlie Burris because he grew it was closed to have the green sprayed for weeds. The fairways were thin and the greens at least half of them were bumpy and needed weed control.
We enjoyed or around but Carolina National can be in much better shape than it is right now.

Fun Layout with Great Par Threes
The National is a really fun layout and was in great shape on this day. The greens staff has done a great job getting the course in great shape with quick (but slightly bumpy) greens. The course is a fun layout winding through the neighborhoods and has some of the best par threes on the Grand Strand.
The Ibis nine is a little quirky with some double-fairway holes and if you're playing for the first time it makes sense to be conservative off the tee just to keep the ball in play. The Egret nine is a bit more open where you can fire away off the tee. Heron is a good mix of tricky holes and longer, "bombs-away" holes.
The staff is always very friendly and the practice facilities, clubhouse, grill, and snack bar are all great as well. Definitely recommend a trip here.

Very good but challenging Course
This course was very good and challenging. First time playing it which made it a little difficult to know the layout and how to play it. Fairways were a little dry and a few bunkers needed some minor work but overall really enjoyed playing here. It didn't hurt that we got a hot deal on Golfnow for $36. Will play again.
