Carolina National Golf Club - Heron Nine

About
Situated along the banks of the Lockwood Folly River, Carolina National Golf Club takes advantage of the scenic low country landscape. The 27-hole course was designed by Fred Couples, whose preservation of the terrain earned the course the certification as an Audubon Sanctuary. The golf course is divided into three nines that are played in 18-hole combinations. The Heron, Egret, and Ibis are named after the birds that call the course home. Each nine offers a different set of challenges. The Heron is both the most scenic and the longest nine. The three par 4s all measure over 400 yards and the final hole is a par 5 that is 587 yards long. The layout has a few holes that play along the river, including the par-3 fifth, which has a green that is almost entirely surrounded by water. This nine will reward strong mid-to-long iron play.

Nice 3 hr 18 holes with Dad
Staff was great. Had to push tee time due to an issue with traveling from out of town. Great pace of play today, 3 hour round. Greens were good with some spots that need attention, but rolled true. Bunkers were washed out due to a storm the previous day and course was still a little wet, but fairways and rough were green and lush. I will definitely play again.
Should have played the gold tees vs blue. Blue tees had a lot of irons off the tee. 6 handicap.
Pretty Good for mid-Summer
A nice place to play in the summer heat. Greens were OK for this time of year - a real challenge to putt. Rough was up a bit due to the hurricane that came through last week. Staff was friendly and helpful; the starter (name escapes me) was top notch friendly. Would definitely replay.

Excellent Course
My son and I played the front 9 on the Egret course Tuesday evening. We are from PA, and come to NC each year. I try to play here each year because it is a terrific course.
Even with all the challenges this year with covid, and the hurricane, the course was in great shape. Very nice layout, with some beautiful surroundings.
The rough is very thick grass, so getting the ball out can be challenging, and the greens were very fast due to the time of day. These are not complaints, just an accurate description of the course.
Tee boxes, fairways, all great shape. I have played here quite a few times, and always feel it is worth the money to play here. Friendly staff also. I highly recommend playing here if you can.

Thank you for your kind words! We hope to see you again at the course very soon for another 5-star experience. Thanks for choosing Carolina National Golf Club - Ibis Nine.
Great Course
Played this morning 8/9/20. First time playing this course. We played the Herron to Egret. Ibis was closed due to hurricane damage. Overall I was very pleased. The area has received tons of rain in the past week from the hurricane and other thunderstorms so therefore the course hasn’t been mowed as it otherwise would have. The fairways were in good shape other than being a little long and shaggy. The rough was very thick. The greens were in great shape. I bet this course is amazing when it’s dry and the staff is able to properly maintain and mow it. Will definitely be back to play soon.

Nice track
Nice course but due to storms it was cart path only and the cart paths need a lot of work as do the carts. I would definitely play the course again.

Excellent Layout and Beautiful, but...
All the layouts at Carolina National are compelling. We played Heron/Egret on this day - Egret and Ibis (have played that other times) are really beautiful and every hole unique. Egret not that far behind. Decent practice/warm-up area.
But... greens were in tough shape in places, and though the fairways were decent the bunkers were almost unplayable. We also had problems with the carts (missing windshield on one, almost out of power on the replacement), and the cart paths are chewed up - even dangerous in places.
Staff said the carts will be replaced soon. The fixing of the paths would be a big undertaking, and improving greens and bunkers likewise will require time and money.
Really, really like the course and the staff was generally helpful. If those improvement were made, would make it a point to play here far more often and would be willing to pay for it.

Staff was very polite and courteous. Course was well maintained. A few greens had some bad spots. Nice layout of course. Will definitely play again. Price was around average for the area.

Not What It Once Was
I have been playing this course for quite a few summers, and it has steadily gone downhill. Greens look ill and have bumpy patches. Rough is so long I could hardly find my balls when they were no more than 5 yards off the fairway. Very disappointing.

Hi yeehawdale! Thank you so much for leaving us with your feedback. We value our customer experience, so your review is important to us. We will make note and we hope to see you back!
Challenging but Fair
In the area for vacation jumped on as a single. The course layout makes you pick your shots. Can’t just pull driver and rip it on each hole. If you hit the faraway you will have a much easier day. Very picturesque and very fun and longer than shows on the card.
Approach shots into a complex green structure are standard. Once on the greens they is some undulation - more than you can read (at least more than I could read).
One negative - bunkers. Haven’t been taken care of since Covid. Almost like playing out of hard mud, off the cart path. Kicked it out a few times...

Wow, we are so happy you enjoyed your round, u314159734959! We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Carolina National
Course and greens were in good shape, Ibis was very soggy and wet but it did storm the night before. Not very long, but you need to hit good shots to score.

Worthy of the drive
About a 45 min drive south of Wilmington is this 3, 9-hole layout of Carolina National. Efficient bag drop area where workers frequently greet regulars & members by name. Large driving range & putting green. Starter combs the area to professionally tell you when to head to the tee. On the course, greens had recently been top dressed with sand but were still rolling well. Some bunkers were wet packed sand due to some recent heavy rain (unsure why others had fresh sand). Holes wind through a housing complex & some have picturesque views of the marsh. Blue tees have lots of 300-350yd Par 4’s so you might consider playing a blended tee. Overall good conditioning and a reasonable price make CN worth the drive.

Treated Exceptional!!
I highly recommend this course! The staff was so friendly and they acted like they appreciated you being there. Course was very nice. Probably top 5 in the entire Myrtle Beach area. It is challenging but fair meaning you could get away with some off the mark shots without losing your ball. Beautiful scenery. Greens were nice. Playing here is a treat. And you will love the staff!

Nice Course. Staff could improve.
Nice course in good condition. Liked the layout. Staff wasn’t very friendly other than in the snack bar. Would play again.

Thank you for your review, Jcp5882. We will pass along your positive experience to our team at Carolina National Golf Club - Ibis Nine. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Has Potential but Needs Updates
The course has potential to be a nice course, but has been neglected. Bunkers were washed out and cart paths were very rough, which in turn led to carts needing maintenance.
