Mot what it used to be
Course is nice. Bought a token for range balls but machine was empty so I had to go back to clubhouse for a refund. Course used to be really nice but the greens are really beat up with some and lumpy. They are bent grass and should be in top condition in April .
Challenging course
Fairways and roughs in good condition. Sand traps were somewhat compacted, but did not affect the shot. Greens were medium to fast speed, rolled true, held most approach shots. All greens had numerous non repaired ball marks.
Great course
Snuck off work early on a Friday afternoon to get a round in before my wife got home from an out of town trip. I have played Deer Brook alot of the years and it is always in pretty good shape, and fun to play. As I have gotten older and do not hit it as far, I have come to realize how long it is from the white tee. It plays almost 6400 yards from the white tees and alot of the par 4s are 380 or more and the par 5s are over 500 yards. That makes it a very difficult course for me. However, the layout is great, there is plenty of room to hit your ball, its not a tight course. The fairways, tees, and rough were just starting to green up. The greens were in pretty good shape, really firm and fast and only a few bad looking spots off the the sides of some of them. They are closing for a couple months this summer to redo their greens and transition them from bent grass to bermuda grass greens. Not sure exactly when that closure will take place.
1 is a shorter par 4, for Deer Brook, downhill on your approach. One of the easier holes.
2 is a longer par 5, moving right, pretty open, but the green is pretty shallow and you cannot go long. (long is bad pretty much everywhere here)
3 is a steep downhill par 3. Plays 15 yards shorter than the yardage
4 is a long uphill par 4. A tree blocks the left side of the green on your approach.
5 is a long downhill par 4. Unlike most greens, this one runs away from you.
6 is a medium length par 3, you absolutely cannot be above the pin. You are better off chipping up than putting down. The day I played they had the tee markers moved up 30 yards from normal. So I had never hit the shot from there. I hit a pitching wedge thinking no way it would go above the pin, but it did and I putted it off the green.
7 is a shorter par 4, but you have to hit your tee shot over a waste/canyon area. It looks tight, but opens up once you get it to the fairway.
8 is a long dogleg left par 5. Again, do not be above the pin.
9 is a par 4, you cannot see the green or the pond around it from the tee.
10 is a long uphill par 5 and is a tighter hole. Fairway opens up to the right on your second shot, and you need to be there for the best angle for your approach to a tricky green.
11 is a long par 4. Watch out for the punch bowl in the green
12 is a medium length par 3
13 is a long par 4, with an elevated green
14 is a longer par 3 depending on where the tee is, and is almost all carry over a pond.
15 is a shorter par 4 but a weird angle from the tee to the fairway makes it deceiving.
16 is a long downhill par 4 that is mostly blind. Keep your drive to the left. Right is blocked out. The approach is over a small creek bed to a flatter green.
17 is a tough par 5. Long, hit two good shots as far as you can hit them. Then take on the pond that has been on your right for your 3rd shot at the green. Dont go long or above the pin.
18 is a long hard par 4. Have to hit a good tee shot to get on or near the green in 2. If you dont, you will be laying up. A pond protects the green short and left, and you cannot go by the pin.
Great course
First time to Deer Brook and we enjoyed the course a lot, definitely would like to play here at least once a month since we are far away. Otherwise, will play here almost every week
Awesome but disappointing
Greens had a lot of bad spots to put through and most bunkers were mostly Red Dirt not sand
I will go back..
Nice course, great conditions and very pleasant layout. Sure, we can wait to see how it looks in few weeks. It was a slow round... but still recommended.
What a great day of golf at Deerbrook. !
The weather was perfect and except for windy conditions the day of golf was perfect. I played well and enjoyed the challenge of tricky greens . Well done Deerbrook !
Deer Brook, Shelby, NC
Very nice course and a friendly staff. We played in the dead of winter. But it was a warm day.And of course, was still in good condition. Most of the fairway grass is dormant, but the greens are nice and putted well. I played discourse many times and never been disappointed. Even when it's crowded to pace, a play is always acceptable. Most on the golfers there are not first time golfers and they move at a nice pace
Fix the greens or lower the prices.
I decided to give Deerbrook another try since I had heard the greens were "better."
I'll be back when they put in the new greens but not before then unless there's just nowhere else to play.
Greens need time to recover
Love the course, love the layout, they just punched the greens.
Mostly sand on em, and some furrows. Other than the greens tho the course was in great shape…sadly, greens are preeeetty important. Give it a couple weeks is my advice.
Brutal greens
Worst greens I’ve ever played on, heard they are getting new greens next year. Same traps could be nice but full of mud and erosion issues all over the course. Cart path needs re done as well. Decent layout and potential to be a very nice course.
Excellent Course
A very nice well maintained and managed course and facility.
Could be better
The course overall is in good shape, the greens although, are not. Most of the greens are in poor shape, with bald spots on most. #10 green is in decent shape though.
Deer Brook plays VERY NICELY
First time playing but it won’t be the last! Staff was very attentive, available and helpful to a first timer. In short, from check-in, rang, the course and local playing partners…exceptional! Tee boxes, fairways and green side all were very well kept. Greens are Bent grass. Which is a very nice putting surface. However, they can be a challenge to maintain…especially if divots aren’t repaired. With that, the greens were about an 8 out of 10 during play…but understandable. It didn’t affect the quality of golf. And priced accordingly. Kudos Deer Brook! I’ll be back time after time when in Charlotte!
