Awesome Mountain Golf
I like to try out a lot of different courses within an hour or so of Charlotte. After one round, Tot Hill Farm is my favorite. It has tons of character, is located in a natural setting, and is an awesome mountain golf course. There is a ton of undulation and many greens have multiple tiers, which can either help feed your ball to the hole or send it way off the green. The course is in good shape and the bunkers are immaculate. Even though this course is a little over an hour from my house, I plan to go back often.
Saturday at Tot Hill.
Beautiful golf course. Friendly staff. Played there many times. This was the only time it had taken over 4 hours. Greens were soft and receptive. A little slow. From tee to green the course was in greeat shape. Stay out of the rough. Thick and unforgiving.
excellent value
This course has a great layout. Offering lots of playing options great value for the money.
Great course, terrible pace of play
The course was excellent. Greens were a little soft, but there had been a lot of rain recently so that was not surprising. However, after finishing the first hole, we waited, and waited, and waited.... every hole. The round took in excess of 5 hours.
Be Prepared
A geologist's dream, with a plethora of rock outcroppings, sand pits, funky streams, and hilly terrain. Many false fronts and blind shots. If you're lucky, your ball may bounce onto a favorable spot on the green; if not, you may never find it again. Very interesting layout, with distinctive, memorable holes.
Tough track, good conditions
This is a very challenging course from the tee. Without a laser or yardage book, it's difficult to know where the landing area is. I hit the ball straight and still had lots of doubt on a number of tee shots. Given the crazy terrain, conditions are surprisingly good. I can't imagine what it takes to maintain this course because of the layout. It's a great value, too. Not a course I could play every day, but worth an occasional trip. Bring a box of top rocks or pinnacles. You will likely lose balls, and you don't need spin around the greens. My tour balls were spinning off the soft greens into trouble. I switched to a harder ball and had an easier time with control, as the greens are very soft. They roll fine, but will have marks. The golf staff was very friendly. My only real complaint was the lack of drinking water--only at 7 and 15--and no bev cart. 9 to 10 only goes near the clubhouse, too.
Very tough!
Pack your A game and extra patience! I've never been on a courses I hate and love at the same time. The beauty is as stunning as the course is challenging. And as lower HDCP player (8), I'd say it's tricked up a bit. Played pin #3. Which I would compare to Sunday placements at the US Open. Greens are a bit hairy, if they weren't, no one would finish a hole. Most of the greens are HUGE, front to back could mean a 3 club difference. With very severe elevation changes. Half the greens have false fronts the other half has some sort of waste area or creek. Blind shots are everywhere. Did I say bring your patience? Course knowledge is a must at Tot Hill farms. Can't wait to play it again!
Hot day
I had read other reviews prior to playing and they were spot on. It was a hot day and forewarned they only have 2 water stops on the golf course one on the front and back. The course was in pretty good shape. Greens are soft and medium speed overall I would recommend a second play.
Strantz!!!!
This is a great layout with many interesting holes. Had so much fun, I went back as a single on Monday following this Friday's round. Staff is awesome, the course is in good shape and the layout is offers many scenic views and great holes.
not for the physically challenged
Great course! I could not complete my round. 4 artificial joints Age 77. Too fat.
The terrain was too much for me to handle.
Not the fault of the course.
18 Signature Holes
Nothing can prepare you for this course. It is one of those "must play bucket list" courses that you'd have to play several times to understand what shot to hit. By far it is one of the top courses in North Carolina. It truly does have 18 holes where each one could be a signature hole.
There is danger on nearly every tee shot, even the par 3's. Some holes are forced carry and many holes have tight fairways. The greens can be very sloped and #17 will remind you of Pinehurst.
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the layout and uniqueness of this course. I played the almost tips tee box and should have moved up however that may have been even more of a challenge?
Be afraid, very afraid however DO NOT miss an opportunity to play this course. Bring your camera although photos will not do it justice and an extra sleeve or two of golf balls. The course is hilly and very scenic.
Diabolical and exciting are both words that come to mind. I wish this course was close to home as I'd play it on a regular basis. Enjoy the round, forget about keeping score and just have lots of fun as "you've got to be kidding me" will be spoken over and over.
Excellent Course
Tough course but if you play smart you can score low. The yardage book helped me a lot. Great conditions all around! I would play here once a week if it was closer to me!
Great value
Course conditions were as always. Fairways well manicured. Greens moderate speed which for this time of year quicker than expected. Overall great experience. Beautiful scenery.
Outstanding Venue
My first visit to THF was outstanding. The course is in superb condition. The lay-out is challenging, a pleasure to the eye, and has marvelous change in hole design and topography. I played as a single so the pace was comfortable and I moved right along. The price is beyond outstanding for such a terrific venue.
The staff was helpful, courteous and provided all of the golfer's needs for your round.
very cool place.
Not the Disneyland of golf that Tobacco Road is down the street, but a beautiful place and challenging course by the same architect. Greens are virtual roller coasters for balls and gave the feel of what the pros faced at Pinehurst last week. Could use more drinking water stations or a roving beverage cart for it was 90 and oppressively hot. A really cool place to play.
Bring Your A Game
Front nine fairly straightforward with moderate difficulty. Back none really difficult with super tricky greens with false fronts and lots of levels. Not a course for higher handicapers or golfers who play tees that are too far back for their skill level. A word of advice would be to check slope rating of each tee and pick accordingly. If you can't chip and or putt don't even attempt this layout. The greens will challenge even the best golfers.
Fun Track for a change of pace
It had been 5-6 years since I last played Tot Hill. IIf you've played a Mike Strantz course you'll see his signature all over this course, blind shots, forced carrys, fairways that look minuscule but are actually very generous, and well protected contoured greens. It's a difficult play, and a few times was a little frustrating, but at the end of the day I'd like to play it again sometime soon now that I know the course better. With Tobacco Road being shut down for 10 weeks, you can get your visually intimidating sandhills golf test at Tot
Great golf course
Played late in the day, so I didn't get all 18 finished. Had a great time and enjoyed the course. There are several fun golf holes and a few shots that will challenge your skills. The greens are tricky so don't go by the hole. It's a fun place to play.
Unique course!
Awesome course, with different challenges on every hole. We were always looking forward to what the next hole would bring. A lot of elevation changes. Had a great time.
Tough but fair
Ranked at one time as the 7th toughest course in America.. Club selection to the green is vital. If you hit the ball to the wrong part of the green your second shot will be a 30 yard chip shot. Slope rating of 144 is no joke. I will definitely go back.
