Independence Golf Club in Midlothian is situated on the edge of the Piedmont region, routed through the area’s mature woodlands and natural wetlands. Tom Fazio designed the course; it's his only daily-fee course design in Virginia. The challenging layout features narrow fairways lined with high, thick rough areas. There are also numerous strategically placed bunkers lurking along the greens. It's a tough golf course but not overly punishing for high handicappers. The course strikes a nice balance between being challenging and playable, a reason that it often serves as host to many Richmond-area tournaments. The layout finishes with an uphill dogleg left that plays over water, with a good drive you can avoid the bunkers that are to both the left and right of the fairway. For beginners, Independence Golf Club also has a nine-hole short course for training as well as a learning center.

Okay Fazio

For a Fazio course I was a little disappointed but it was in pretty good shape overall. I scored well but I just didn't come away with the Fazio feeling I usually get playing his courses. Would I play it again...absolutely. I guess I just expected a little more but hey I can't complain about a 77 but so much.

First time playing Independence. Loved the course. For a Sunday, the pace of play was great. Marshals were on top of it. The greens were great. No pitch marks and they are fast. Can’t wait to play here again.

It's hard to say anything bad about this course other than the price of it is a little bit too high! For the money, Royal New Kent is a much better deal as it is in just as good condition but Independence is very nice!

Greens like glass, and conditions great overall but.....

To have 18th hole closed for watering at 2pm is ridiculous when they charged full 100 green fee. I get it we need the rain but water early in the morning or don’t charge full price.

Beautiful, but..

18th hole wasn't open as they were watering (at 2 pm?). I get that we're in a dry stretch, but water earlier so all holes can be open OR don't charge full price. Not what you expect from a $100 course.

Except for the price, a great experience!!

I have to imagine that Independence is as close to a PGA tour course as any in the Richmond area! I don't think I have ever played faster greens except at Kingsmill! But I truly enjoyed the experience.
