Needs attention on your fairways
For the price ( $22 ) I really could not complain but those fairways are starting to look like gravel . Thanks for at least keeping the greens descent.
Good value for money
We played as a foursome and took just over 4 hours to finish the round - could have gone faster if we wanted; that was pleasant and faster than the normal pace of play at this course. The greens were a little bumpy, but significantly faster than usual, which was a pleasant surprise. The fairways did have several bare spots and areas of dormant grass, but heck this is January, and expecting lush fairways at this time is insane. I have always enjoyed the architecture of the course and the risk/reward offered on many of the holes. The prevailing wind off the bay also adds some challenge. The bar has good food/beer choices to offer a pleasant 19th hole experience at the end of the round. As munis go, this track is more interesting than many others.
Course is tired and needs work
Not in the best (or near best) of conditions. Needs lots of work.
Extremely overbooked
This course is one Ive played before, however, this was a terrible experience. The course was overbooked and the person at the front desk put two groups that had later tee times ahead of us, and was about to put another group in front of us. I had to go back into the pro shop in order to clear this up. Terribly disappointed!
SLOW!!!
Started at 12:15 pm on a Saturday. After 5 hours on the course and 3 holes left to play we gave up.
At check-in we were told the pace of play was 4 hrs 30 min.... more like 5 hrs 45 min.
Good pace of play and nice greens.
The pace of play was great - 4 hrs. Greens were smooth and can be fast if you are above the hole.
Too expensive for twilight!
longest 14 holes I've ever played in my life! Doesn't anyone understand pace of play? 1:52 tee time no chance of finishing! Here's what I'd do, every group that was near my tee time that didn't just leave gets a free voucher because that would be fair!
Poor Conditions
The course was in pretty bad conditions. A lot of fry dead areas. So many nice courses in the area I can't see myself ever playing this course again or recommending it to anyone. The staff was friendly. The snack shack was closed and we had to get food from the main restaurant which took forever.
Nice flat but rolling fairways trees open off the tee
Liked this course when I played the back nine which they do in the early mornings, didn't play the front. I work near here and didn't expect much since I've not heard people talk about the course when I'm out and about. We played the back tees and distance was good, there weren't any of those 340 yard par 4s. Open off the tee which I like, I'm a double digit handicapper and I don't need to have to thread the needle with a driver. Nice sand traps in tee ball landing area and surrounding the green, sand in these traps was nice - none of those rock hard traps. Par 3s were longer, I think one was 200 and the other maybe 180. Greens had nice contour and longer putts were a challenge. Flat but nicely rolling fairways, I walked which I normally don't do - great course to walk. I was pleasantly surprised. However if you're a golfer that is looking for the tier 1 course like Spyglass or even San Jose local like Cinnabar you might not get too excited, especially if you're a good golfer. But even for a better golfer you still have to have some distance to play well on this course. Try it out, its centrally located with easy access from 101 so you don't have to drive out in the middle of nowhere to play. Nice range with matts and a chipping putting area that's spacious. Pro shop has a lot of good stuff and the restaurant looked busy so I'm guessing the food is reasonable.
Fun and interesting
I enjoy the risk vs. reward nature of many holes at Santa Clara. There are a lot if dog-leg holes where trouble awaits if your shot doesn't go the distance, or if it goes too far. It's always going to be breezy near the bay, so that adds another layer of complexity. Really a course that you have to think your way around if you are not intimately familiar with it (as I am not). Greens are pretty lumpy, but the rest of the course was in nice shape. Played at 3:00 on a Friday and were held-up a little bit, but still managed to finish in 4-3/4 hours. Nice range (mats) and nice facility overall.
Good course for the deal, too many walkers!
Good deal for an 18-hole course but pace of play gets drastically affected with too many walkers on course.
Weekday Play, Not Weekend
Parking very difficult. No Marshall on Course to insure that play moves along.
Tough Greens + Bunkers, fun layout
-Almost every single hole on this course is a dogleg.
-A majority of the greens are surrounded by at least 2 bunkers
-The greens have tons of contours and breaks to read.
-A few elevation changes and difficult lies to navigate
Overall, I enjoyed the course and as a novice found it moderately challenging. Nothing compared to Coyote Creek or Cinnabar but still a good enough foe. The greens are in good shape and overall its a decent course.
55 dollars for 2pm on a sunday is decent i guess compared to other near by courses. But i would probably rather pay 30 for sunnyvale muni or a little more for the ranch.
3/5
One of the better municipal courses in the Bay Area
This is one of the better public courses in the South Bay.
Great bang for the buck.
Had a great experience playing this course yesterday (Monday). Staff was very friendly and accommodating, price was right (booked last minute through GolfNow), and the course was very well kept. We arrived for a 2:52pm tee time but wanted to hit the range for a bit beforehand. Asked the guy at the pro shop if this was a problem, his response was "not at all, head to the tee when you're ready. Course was great for me (beginner) but added some good challenges as well. Great views of the SJ hills and new 49ers stadium under construction. Restaurant had a great happy hour (2 beers and 2 apps for $20!) and the bartender was very nice. Finished 18 holes in about 5 hours. Would definitely recommend this course to other beginners as well as folks looking for a leisurely day of golf.
Course is challenging fairways wet
The course is challenging and each hole has its own character. Only real issue was the amoutn of water in the fairway creating mud spots
Well maintained
I like this course, well maintained. Many hole have right dog-leg. Disappointed is the group in front of us were playing very slow. We frustrated. The course needs to pay attention on playing pace.
Beautiful course, great value
I love this course! One suggestion. Offer the option of walking the course (no cart) at a reduced rate. I much prefer to walk courses, if allowed. Santa Clara is a relatively short, walkable course. I received no discount for choosing to forego the cart that was included in the price, but would have if I reserved my tee time with the golf course directly.
