About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

A local gem in decline
Course needs work. "Fairways" full of deep cracks which have healed on other courses in the area. Several greens have been sanded in areas grass has stopped growing. The "starter" yesterday seemed lost. He offered little guidance beyond which cart to place our clubs then came up later claiming we were supposed to have paired up with another twosome who had teeded off 2 groups in front of us. My playing partner and I had approached the twosome and asked about joining them and were told their tee time was 2 groups in front of our scheduled time. Re: pace of play. The twosome mentioned above was extremely slow. The appeared to wait until the group in front of them reached the green on par 4s before teeing off. VERY AGGRAVATING. The foursome in front of us had to beginner golfers (based on where their shots went) and they waited on the twosome in front of them. THE STAFF: The woman whom I believe runs the course was very professional and considerate as she worked both the front check-in desk and the snack bar. Surprisingly the course also had a young lady running a beverage in the middle of the week. She was also very considerate and professional. In my opinion, the corporation which owns this course needs to make some investments back into the course. It is a same this once beautiful course has been let to deteriorate this badly.

Course has gone down hill
Pace of play was terrible. Marshall did nothing. All bunkers have been been removed. Other players were not well versed in etiquette and confrontational. Ended up leaving halfway through the back 9.
Greens were not well maintained.
Will not be back.

Left after 5 holes
This course is a complete joke, spend the extra 15 dollars and play somewhere decent literally the worst course I’ve ever played at.

This course is in poor shape,
This course is in very poor shape. The main straight aways...middle of course very bumpy, which loosened up all the kidney stones inside your body and anything else in your body. Just terrible. When I played years ago I don't remember this course being this bad.

Great People But The Course Needs Some TLC
The staff was very pleasant and accommodating. However, the course and facilities were wanting. The fairways still had wide cracks from the early summer heatwave. A few of the fairways had holes dug to access underground pipes that were unmarked and consequential in size. The greens had a surprising number of weeds. The cart paths were not well marked or intuitive (fortunately, I was playing with someone who had played there a number of times in the past). The cart was uncleaned. The round took approximately 4.5 - 5 hours; on the 13 or 14th hole, we were waiting with another foursome for the tee box to be cleared.

Good value for the money
This course has gotten much better since the rains. There is still some work to do.
They were mowing the rough while I was there. This in itself is OK, but they left all the cut grass on the ground. Or kicked it into the remaining rough.
I'll wait a few weeks and let that issue take care of itself before I play there again.

Bad conditions
Course was in bad shape, certainly rough fairways and losing greens, spotty.

Weird maintenance
The fairways and roughs were being mowed causing our cart to lose 6 balls because mown grass was in big piles. Don’t know why they waited so long to mow for asi it had been several days since rain

Finally…no humidity.
The greens were pretty good as were the fairways. I enjoyed the hot dog and beer at the turn that they kept warm for me…considering it was after 5 pm. I did lose a few golf balls in the heavy rough. I find this course and it’s facilities suits me. It’s clear to me the clubhouse, golf carts, and greens get a a lot of TLC.

Course is a Good place to play for a low price
Play here routinely, definitely has potential to be a lot better, but not bad. Tee boxes were in good condition. Fairways has long grass, rough was not consistent in grass height and lost about 7 balls, that were playable. Greens were better than they have been all summer, but still had brown spots, irregular bumps and uneven cut holes. Fun course to play and practice, but no competition worthy.

Better
Course condition great improvement over the last months. Greens very good but the fairways need much work. Rain helping with the cracks but the fairways full of weeds and no defined fairways and rough. More maintenance needed.

Borderline unplayable
It is a real shame how quickly this course has gone downhill. The drought has not helped, but it is more than that at this point. There is a complete lack of care for the course. The greens are patchy, the fairways have massive cracks, and crab grass has taken over 90% of the rough. On top of that they still don’t have drinking water on the course. Don’t waste your money here.
