About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Course is getting better
This course has gotten much better over the last few weeks. The rain has really helped it green up. There are still several cracks in the ground on the fairways and it’s easy to lose a ball.
I like the way this course is laid out And the pricing is very good.

Wait a while
Front nine fairways were pretty rough. Green were ok, some had rough patches. Back nine in better shape .
Lots of over grow areas of St Augustine . Wasn't''t worth the price and it's a shame, it can be a great track. hopefully it can be corrected before it becomes a pasture.

Much better
Fairway still have large crack but better after some rain. That being said, fairways are not cut evenly and cover with weed!!
The best news is that greens are so much better. Some sandy patches but very smooth
Hope fairways improve next time. Only recommend because I see improvements!!!

First and last time I will play this course
The greens were in bad shape the fairways were so cracked I had to move my ball several times .

Improving in the right direction
greens are looking better each time I play there. Some of the holes, are recovering, but greens around repair area looks great. Some of the holes are immaculate. A glimpse as to what to expect once all the greens recover.

The fairway has huge cracks!!
Unfortunately the fairways are in the worse condition I have seen this course be in. Desperately needs attention.

Looking much better
About 4 greens have spots needing TLC, but around it, greens are great. Other none spot greens are GREAT.

Where’s the hydration at 95 degrees Fahrenheit
Visiting from Michigan. Played on a hot Sunday afternoon. The grille closed at 4:00 and we had a 4:10 tee time. No prior notice that there would be nothing for sale to stay hydrated. No personal coolers allowed. The hot temperature forced us to call it after 9 holes. All 4 of us were drained beyond playing all 18. The saving grace is that they gave us a 9 hole rain check to come back another time. When it happens, it will be before 4:00
