About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Adaptability
Can’t ask for a better place to play when there’s a rain delay. Just order a beer and a burger from the great grill and head out as the course dried out. Cart path only but good exercise. The staff is flexible and will get you set up regardless. Good ambiance with the flat screens and seating area. Has the feel of a golf club with reasonable prices.
July 2022
Course was a bit rough, especially fairways, but there has been a significant drought in the area. We had a strange run in with the starter who was visibly upset that we were on the practice green by the first tee instead of teeing off 20 minutes early right then at 9:40am instead of 10am. It was strange, and a bit of a put off. Hopefully he was just having a rough morning and this was a one time thing.
I love the course layout and the value for the money is great. I’ve had wonderful experiences there in the past, I really think this was a one off experience. I will be back, and expect the course to be in much better shape after we get some rain.

REALLY NICE COURSE
Overall, this is a really nice course. I played during the week and there was maintenance activity going on. But I'm not saying that's a bad thing. They have to do that some time. I can see that a course like this requires much maintenance and considering the heat wave this area is going through, this course was well worth the money. I guess my biggest gripe may be the lack of yardage markers and signage directions to the next hole.

Good bang for your buck
Overall the course is good except for some cracks in the fairways due to the excessive heat, I don’t like the fact that they did away with the bunkers but it helps with the speed of play. So overall I’m satisfied

Former Great Course
This used to be a top notch public course, but things have gone down hill over time. You can tell that we are in a recession and heat wave right now too. It looks like fungus attacked some of the greens; dallisgrass and sedge weeds are abundant, and some fairways are bone dry. I lost one ball in a crevice in the middle of the fairway!

Need water
Huge cracks in the fairways!!!!!need rain or water. Drive slow or you’ll loose your clubs.
Greens are ok with patches of sand.
Back nine much better then the front.
Love the layout but can’t recommend under current conditions.

Course conditions need attention
I’m sure it’s because of the drought, but the Fairways were really dry. Cracks in the Fairways & they need a lot of attention. Always like to play this Beautiful Layout but will probably wait until the Fall.
Hopefully when rain arrives the course will be better.

Terrible conditions.
Rocky and hard fairways with little green grass. Large gaps in the earth, could easily lose a ball into a crevice. Sand bunkers on poor greens. Terrible pace. Took 5 hours behind some idiots too.

Ughhh
We are all dealing with the drought so given that the course was rough concrete in spots and the fear of loosing a ball in the cracks in the soil overall not bad.
Pace of play was the worst I have been subjected to in some time. Not sure what the hold up was but 13 holes in 3:45 hours is in acceptable and I bailed.

Course condition Subpar due to Texas Drought
Course conditions were subpar because of the Heat drought in Texas. The condition of the course is subpar. Fairways on some holes were literally opening up because of the drought. Some greens had dirt patches. Hole 9 was under repair. It’s originally a Par 4 but changed to Par 3. Most of the time the course is in good condition. Weather has played a factor in all of South Texas golf courses.

Course has been in better shape.
Obviously the entire area needs water, but these guys are back to cracks in fairways large enough to lose your ball in. Have played the course for many years and really enjoy it but will not be back until fall at best.

Issues with Pricing
When I called to pay the total and add an extra person I was told about the military discount and over 55 discount. I later called to change the time, to a later time and was told we would get a refund due to the earlier time pricing was higher. When we got there on Sunday, the gentleman in the pro shop stated the lady who gave the discount was wrong as discounts are not on the weekend. Therefore, I could not get the difference in pricing that I was told earlier. There should really be better communication between staffing and clients should not be held responsible when their are issues.

This course is in terrible condition. there are cracks and bumps all over the fairways and the greens have tons of sand on them. Just awful - Ive nev
There are cracks and bumps everywhere. The greens have a ton of sand on them and lots of bumpy green patches. Just AWFUL! I have never seen it so bad! it should cost only about $20 to play!!!!!

We need water for drinking and to clean balls. We need the marking stake at 150 from the greens.
