About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

First off, the course has improved from last time I played about a month ago. The first four holes are in terrible condition with cracks and concrete Jared fairways. If you play Southwyck before, you know how bumpy these fairways can be. However, starting from #5, the course became better especially the back nine. I was please with the greens from#5 thru 18. Not great but very puttable.
Keep up the improvements on the greens and address the crack fairways on #1 thru #4.

A Value for your money
It’s a good course, no frills. It has a good range and a good chipping course with sand traps that help you but the course has no traps. The course itself has gotten better over the course of the spring and summer. The weeds are gone, the greens are better. Don’t expect top flight service. Book your round show up and play

Goat ranch
From tee to green this course could use some maintenance…a little water wouldn’t hurt. The Texas sun has baked the fairways to a fine cracked clay pottery. While I value some run out on my drives I’d prefer to hit off grass.

Links style, no trees no bunkers, great cheese burgers.
If you tee off after 3pm, call the grill on number 8 and they’ll have your order ready for you. Cheeseburgers are great with all the fixings. Hot dogs too. The layout is wide open. My favorite hole is the par 5 number 14 which has an approach over a creek and vegetation into a small greeen. The 16th? Doesn’t suit my game, the par 4 normally into the wind has a long water carry for the approach and it bends left around that water…I hit a fade. The 9th is another long carry par 4 but with a tail wind. Faders are better off as it bends tight.

Southwck golf course
We asked a Marshall to come out and talk to the 2 guys in front of us. Theywere parking on the greens. Teeing off with 2 balls etc. They were very slow. The fairways are in terrible shape. Very rough. I’ll not waste my money anymore.

Spotty greens, courteous staff
Fairways dry leading to lots of roll. Greens have bare spots. Staff was courteous. Pace of play was fine once we played through a VERY SLOW foursome who started in front of us.

Seems to be hit hard by COVID. Still good 18 just needs a little more love on the greens.

Losing greens
They have started to lose several greens and they are becoming bare in several areas. They also still do not have drinking water on the course where almost every other course in the Houston area does.

If you “putt for dough”, plan on losing money here
The adage “You get what you pay for” is true. The greens fees are inexpensive because the greens are in horrible condition. The bottom line: most all of us are willing to spend $$ to putt on great greens. If you are looking for inexpensive golf and don’t care about the condition of the course, this course will do. Also, the practice green is the best conditioned green on the whole course.

Very enjoyable 18 holes
This course is one of the nicer courses I have played. Some of the greens could be in better shape, but overall the course is well maintained. We played about 8:00 am on a Wednesday and it was not crowded at all. The foursome in front of us kept the pace of play reasonable.
I would recommend this course for an enjoyable golf outing.

Good layout
This could really be a great course, however it would take a big effort, seems the course has been neglectcted for a while which is a pitty.
Greens are bumpy and a lot of brown spots.
Greenfee is to high compared to condition.
