About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Course needs
We need water for drinking and to clean balls. We need the marking stake at 150 from the greens.

The Course us in bad shape
This course is probably in the worst shape it's ever been in. The greens were bad. The fairways are horrible. The fairways have cracks in them that are really bad. Not one single green looked good. They got rid of all the bunkers, but the greens had bunkers with all the sand on them. Was a nice course in the past, not sure what happened. The pace of play was the only bright spot. They gotta lower them prices for what that course is offering.

Best bang for your bucks
I played this course many times before, and for many years, and the greens are in excellent shape, probably the best greens and fairways on the area. I highly recommend this it.

May not come back
Yes, it was a very hot day, but the pace of play and no marshalling made for the worst round ever at this course. Also, no drinking water on the course and 96* temperature. The pace so bad we decided that it was absolutely no fun and quit with 3 holes to go . We were waiting up to 20 minutes just to tee off each hole. The group ahead looked for balls on every hole. Ridiculous. No ettiquite from golfers ahead and no marshal to get things moving. May never play again.

Ignored
The course is ignored except for mowing. No amenities on course like water, trash bathrooms. No sand traps. No rough, no trees.
The clubhouse is spartan and empty.
Management should close course and develop property as real estate.

No bad
The course overall was okay. There were several greens lacking good grass,which I do not understand for the best growing time of the year. We saw no one really out on the corse working. Not sure if they have the workers or just not doing any maintenance

Windswept Southwyck
Four holes on the front nine two thru five are into the wind and really tough. The cart girl visits regularly so even on the hottest days…it was 93 with 100 degree heat, you can cool off. Plus they are very nice. It’s also good to call ahead to have grill orders ready at the turn. Lots of strategy on this links course. No sand traps, they’ve been sodded over. Not disappointed.

Do they even have a greens keeper
Greens were terrible and the fairways were even worse. Really bad infestation of weeds.

70% playable
First off, the course has improved from last time I played about a month ago. The first four holes are in terrible condition with cracks and concrete Jared fairways. If you play Southwyck before, you know how bumpy these fairways can be. However, starting from #5, the course became better especially the back nine. I was please with the greens from#5 thru 18. Not great but very puttable.
Keep up the improvements on the greens and address the crack fairways on #1 thru #4.
