Winter at Appleby

Considering the weather and the COVID situation the course had winter teas and winter greens on and you had to play of a mat on the fairways, it was very enjoyable with no hold up in play.

The actual greens looked in great condition and we can’t wait to come back again

Great course

First time playing the course and really enjoyed it. Played with two members who were great fun and good guides for the day. The course itself had fantastic views and the greens were playing really well. I'm used to playing on parkland courses with plenty of trees so it was nice to have a new challenge. There were some great par 3s on the course including the 4th and 16th. The course wasn't particularly long which meant there were chances for good scoring.

Brilliant course all year round

Have played this course on numerous occasions in opens and just on a day out. No matter what time of year we have been it is always in excellent condition. This was no different despite there having been 3 days of heavy rain. Some great holes capped off by the 15th. Always a friendly welcome and although we didn’t use the clubhouse on this occasion it is always very good. If your in the area give yourself a treat and play this great little course.

Wet weather
Walked

A wonderful course, absolute pleasure to play. Very open and forgiving, no trees or water hazards to speak of, but it's a challenge in a different way: the natural grazing land means you rarely have a normal stance and footing, every shot needs thinking about, especially when you end up off the fairway and have to try and hold a green with little spin. Speaking of the greens, some of the best, in both condition and design. Nice subtle breaks, once you get it over the shoulder of the many bunkers protecting them or chipped on from the very tight lies of the fairways.

Great drainage, threw it down at one point and there was no standing water.

If you're not on the green on the 15th off the tee your card is ruined.

A gem of a course, will be playing regularly.

Gorgeous scenery and smooth greens - well worth playing

Played on a sunny and breezy afternoon. Warm (distanced) welcome. Friendly members. Not long on the card but a solid test of golf - fairways hard to find, elevation changes and clumps of deep rough, gorse and heather. This is good, honest club golf. Greens were smooth as billiard tables (sheep kept at bay by electric fences) though thankfully not frighteningly swift. A joy to putt on. Any missed putts were user error. Standout holes were the fun par 3s at 4 and 15. The drive across a fern filled chasm at 5 was not for the faint-hearted. Support this club - it's a hidden gem.

Tough on the soul

Played this in what started out playable conditions which soon turned ugly. High up on west moorland pennine country this can happen. Wind and rain made it impossible to continue after 10 holes and we had to head in to the sanctuary of the very welcoming staff at the clubhouse. Good facilities and restaurant on site. A bit out the way from appleby itself so you need a car. The course was varied but very open and undulating. The front 9 manifested itself on the eastern side of the land before you make an anti clockwise turn into the prevailing wind for the start of the back 9 which can be very tough into the normal south westerly wind. We couldnt complete our round as there is no contact number that we could find to reclaim our £18 pp that we paid for 1/2 a round which is disappointing from golf now as officially the course have to close the course and we have to contact golf now and they have to contact them to confirm. It's a terrible arrangement and my friend and I were out of pocket as a result and we wont book in advance in future if there is the slightest chance we will be rained off.

Great round at Appleby

Have played the course many times before and have always enjoyed it. The condition of the course and the weather was perfect. Its is a great example of a moorland course with some very unusual holes. It can be a very challenging knock in poor weather.

Something different

Great location. Great value and friendly staff.

The course literally blends into the landscape and the wildlife roams free. Once you get used to stepping over the electric fence protecting the greens golf is good. The turf underfoot is soft to walk on and great for ball striking.

Got to try it to understand .Will be playing again.

Appleby-in-Westmorland

The course was in good condition despite having rained for the previous two days. Some deceptive holes for the first timer. Watch out for wind picking up mid afternoon as this made the last 3 holes a challenge. Staff friendly. I will definitely play Appleby again
