SilverHorn Golf Club of Texas
About
Silverhorn Golf Club of Texas, located only 15 minutes from San Antonio's Riverwalk, has quickly gained a reputation as being some of the best golf in Texas. The layout covers 262 scenic acres of rolling hills covered in mature oaks and cedar trees. The challenging golf course features tree-lined fairways and carefully contoured greens. There are also lakes and creeks, both dry and wet, coming into play throughout the golf course. The front nine's signature hole is the par-5 sixth, which has 20 acres of water bordering the entire left side, while the back nine's signature is the par-4 15th, which is considered the toughest hole on the golf course. This 446-yard hole features an elevated green that is guarded by a large bunker on the left and two creeks crossing the fairway.

Love this course!
Always a fun course to play that will punish you with wayward shots. What really stood out were the greens. I don't know if they re-did them or what but they were in amazing condition, almost spongy.. the ball would hit and sit or even spin back.
Charging a lot of money but it’s not really worth that much
Look- I’ve played SilverHorn for well over 15 years. I’ve always enjoyed the course, their food and drink offerings, and the staff.
The last three times that I have played there have been in the last six months and their green fees have gone up to match other courses of this type that did their increases first.
$110 for greens fee and half a cart. And $8.50 for a small bag of range balls.
Well this course isn’t worth that much.
We played there today. The driving range is usually pretty beat up by the time we got there but grass is better than mats. They have the TopTracer tool on their range which can give you feedback on your swings, shots, and other info. I didn’t use it today because my right elbow is jacked up and I figured that I didn’t need to compete against myself but to just hit the ball straight.
First hole is a pretty straight par 5 but is not that easy. When we got on to the green we noticed the issue of the cup replacement grass was noticeably lower than the rest of the green. We needed to create an impromptu rule to give us relief from having to putt over that 1/4” drop off into the spot where the cup used to be. We made jokes about if it got stuck in that hole we’d still count it as holed. We weren’t serious.
One of the problems of this course is the abundance of standing water on the cart paths, around the greens, in-between tee boxes, fairways, and in the case of the third hole, the tee boxes themselves.
One of the more pleasant features of this course is the abundance of wildlife that you may encounter during your round. Ducks, deer, and other critters might unnerve you if you wind up close enough to the tree line.
There are many challenging greens and pin placements.
But with the challenging greens comes the one thing that caused my playing partner to lose several strokes- bald patches in the turf (see photos).
The final thing that I will criticize are the bunkers. The sand that they use is fine. It’s not too course nor too fine. However in many places, and because this course gets so much useage, the traps could use more sand in them.
Back in October, I partially tore my UCL in my right elbow when my club grabbed the weed barrier fabric in the bottom, it stopped my club in an almost full swing.
Many bunkers appear this way.
Now to my thesis statement- going back 12 months, the course cost $95 / round with cart.. The course was in much better shape. Even during the severe droughts and during our Summers, this facility always presented a quite playable facility and it still is.
I just cannot justify the extra $15 to play a course that was in better shape a year ago,
For instance, I shouldn’t need to drop from my drive shot being swallowed in the middle of the fairway from a water leak:/ giant standing water area.
If you are coming to SA, this is a decent place to play and a cheaper alternative to some of the other courses north of downtown but as I sit here icing my elbow again, because I mishit a tee shot on #3 where my 3w went deep into the tee box. My 3w got stuck in the mud on the tee box and a clump of wet mud actually went further than my ball, I would like to reiterate that this course is in good enough shape to justify the $100+ fees.
Overpriced
Course was decent but way overpriced for what you get. No water stations, no ball cleaning stations, cart girl came by once, greens were in rough shape and patchy, fairways on some holes were rough. Course is not worth $100 a round. This should be around $50
Think Again!!!
This course is way, way, way overpriced!!!!!! $110 for a course that has no one playing it!!!!! Course conditions are lucky if they can half that on the weekends!!!!!!! The homes had better yards than the course!!! If you charge premium for the round it SHOULD BE WORTH IT!!!! Alamo golf trail has better kept courses for half the price!!!!! Won't be back anytime soon!!!!!!!!!!!
Enjoyed play
The group infront was slow and distracted with feeding the
Deers and should have let us play threw
Solid course, rough conditions
Overall the course had a great layout, but man were the conditions rough. Tee boxes weren’t in great shape, driving range was shredded, and greens had just been sanded and had quite a few dry spots as well. Definitely could see the course playing great when conditions are pristine, but yesterday was rough for sure.
What happened Silverhorn???
I have played silverhorn many times over the 25 years that I have lived here and this is by far the worst I have ever seen this course in this bad of shape. Yes, it does have a lot of water damage from the recent heavy rain, but the course conditions go far beyond that. To start with the carts, feel and drive like they've been in service for at least 15 years. The driving range is absolutely horrible. The mats are all black and nasty and look like they have some sort of mold in them .There is a lot of weeds in and around the course, especially around the greens. Most of the greens have some sort of fungus and are very patchy and have a lot of spots of crab grass. This was at one time definitely a top five course in San Antonio, but it almost feels like they've given up on the course condition for the year and that's sad to see on such a really nice track. Most of the Alamo City trail courses are in better shape right now than this course. I guess it's not bad for a $40 deal, but don't expect it to be like silverhorn from the past.
Meh
Greens were pretty rough. No ball washing or water stations. Saw the golf cart girl once. Dated course that charges a pretty penny, but could get a substantial ratings boost with just a few amenity upgrades.
this course doesnt play like $100. I would have a hard time playing again for more than $70
Horrible condition for too much $$$
I have played at SilverHorn more than 30 times over the last 20 years. It is in the worst condition imaginable, and the nerve to charge $130 per person. The range, the tee boxes, the fairways, and most importantly the greens were in awful shape. They should reconsider their rates If not, reinvest in the course.
Great Course
Super location, challenging layout with some narrow landing spots, trees, undulating greens. Some dry spots, but mostly decent.
Thank you for your kind words! We hope to see you again at the course very soon for another 5-star experience. Thanks for choosing SilverHorn Golf Club of Texas.
