Golfer Reviews
Too busy
The course was extremely overbooked. There was a three ball in front of us with 1 buggy and two sets of clubs between all three of them. Very, very slow left after 11 holes.
First time playing after break for ten years
Both myself and my daughter recently started back playing golf - 3 months of driving range practice and lessons we thought we would try Heaton park golf course .
We booked on line with no issues , we turned up 30 mins early and found a car park which was pay and display - unfortunately we parked in this car park and payed by phone we then walked across the road into the cafe area and found out that there is a separate car park which we could have used !!! To be fair there is no signage telling us about the car park and nothing on the booking site to state this and the grumpy older lady behind the cafe counter was quite rude when I pointed it out to her - so onto the tee times books - she the older grumpy lady said you are early and if u want u can go out behind the next 4 ball - so we did try to join this Que but unfortunately the next three ball jumped in before us ,no worries we went out behind them - we enjoyed our 18 holes somewhat grueling with the tough hills n Blind tee shots but we enjoyed the course had a good banter with the 3 ball in front of us and four ball behind us - yes we will play again but now know the car park available and I think we would hire a buggy 🛺 too
Value For Money But Tough
Its a difficult one this.
I haven't played municipal golf course for many years but was playing with a relative beginner so it seemed appropriate.
In fairness it's probably suitable because playing is relaxed and nobody cares about standard.
Everybody just appears to be enjoying their golf.
However, the course is a lot tougher than I remember from my learner days. If there's a straightforward flat hole I can't recall it.
There are an awful lot of blind shots and you have to be driving the ball very well to score well here.
The greens are in good condition and the course generally is in as good a nick as I would expect on a private course.
The staff were helpful and you are made very welcome
In summary it's a good test and worth the money but if you don't want to play a hilly golf course don't play here.
Not the best !
Tee times too close together! Waiting every hole ! Greens poor , very very hilly , too many people playing, no dress code ! Fairways a bit scruffy
Greens a disgrace
Played 2nd April, having played this course dozens of times over years but 1st time this year. The condition of the greens were terrible and worst greens we gave ever played on a paying course. They have been raked but big pieces of ripped grass all over all greens making it pretty much unplayable, see photo. No attempts made to remove debris and more sand than Blackpool beach. Condition of course has been getting worse over time but this is our last visit this year until it gets sorted out. Bridge to 15th hole from 14th hole still not repaired after 2 years so expected to play 11th then treck back to play 14th, which most people don't bother doing, so only get 17 holes. On its day was a good challenging hilly course, but better to pay a few quid extra and play a private course that has decent greens.
Could be great
The course is a good course, pretty dry but very hilly. A lot of blind holes if you haven’t been before. The greens were terrible! Lots of waiting on every hole! Just too many people on it.
On the day
So the day went well coming out with an overall of 85 my lowest score
The back 9 ... well then good to start off with then after 13 who knows what's going on the course is a mess temp holes 14 15 16 17 18 you don't know where your at with it needs sorting asap
Considering the weather
Considering the 3 days of torrential rain we had had previous to our visit, we expected to find it very boggy. However the new drainage has done well and only a small patch between the temporary 18th tee & green were bad the rest were really good.. If you could also take care when coming back past the 13th Green its a bit treacherous with people playing down whilst you have to go round the back of the green as the path is knackered.
Course conditions
The walk between 13 & the temp 14 is horrendous & needs serious attention. Also off course you could do with a compressed air bower for cleaning up before packing your stuff in the car.
New layout
The truck between the old & new 18th is under water. The scorecard should also reflect the change but doesn't. We skip the 14th on the card score the 15th to 18th & then score the new 18th as the 14th.
Really good course for the money
Nice course seemed to be well maintained. When you park up go into the club house before paying as I got told I didn’t have to pay for parking after I had already paid. 1 hole was closed but you could come back to it from a different side if you wanted to. I’d definitely go back to play there really enjoyed the course
Great course, currently undergoing improvements works
Course was in very good condition for a municipal. Greens were smooth and fast. The bunkers are under going improvements it seems. A lot had been dug out or filled in and we actually seen the digger out on course working on them. Course in a lot better condition than when I played last year. Excellent value for money with great views of the hills on one side and Manchester on the other. It is a physical test though, so be prepared to walk up and down a lot of hills. Also has a temporary layout due to an issue with a bridge. Is it a tour level course? No. But it seems to be improving and offers tremendous value.
Great course
Excellent course enjoy playing here can't understand people pulling it down its not and will never be a pga tour course but its an honest course and always open great layout and the course can't be blamed for slow players in front of them I go early and never have a problem one of my favourite courses
Avoid avoid avoid
My dad and me played this course some 20 odd years ago and as we were in the area thought we'd play again for old times sake. Unfortunately we were far from impressed. Don't get me wrong there are some very picturesque and challenging holes, if only you could find any grass on the tee boxes to actually tee off from. Then the pace of play was absolutely ridiculous, we were stuck behind a couple of four balls who didn't even consider allowing us to play through even though they spent the majority of their rounds looking for each other's balls in the trees! The greens in fairness were ok, although there was quite a bit of debris on a few of them. The bunkers are there but youll be lucky to find any sand in them, there are rakes in there but i think they might be for the hundreds of weeds that are residing in them! Maybe they took all the sand out to fill the new beach feature they have for the kids in the park? There was a whole hole missing that none of the reception staff thought to mention to us, we spent about 10 minutes looking for the 15th hole which when the group behind us caught us up and told us there wasn't currently a 15th at least it gave the slow four ball ahead of us chance to get a hole ahead of us for the 1st time. There was far more negatives than positives and if I could actually be bothered to list them all I'd probably be here all night. Honestly, if your in the area and fancying a round, try one of the many other courses within a 4 or 5 mile radius instead.
