Slaley Hall Hotel & Golf - Hunting Course
        About
Slaley Hall Hotel & Golf owes is existence to Samuel Hunting who first purchased the estate lands in the late 1800's and it remains today a symbol of Edwardian elegance and a grand retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Set amidst 1000 acres of prime Northumbrian forest and moorland, the first nine holes of the Hunting Course opened for play in 1989. By 1990, the completed course won high acclaim and since then it has matured and undergone subtle improvements. The second championship course, the Priestman opens in May 1999.
Measuring 7088 from the championship tees, this Dave Thomas designed course incorporates forest, parkland, and moorland with an abundance of lakes and streams. The challenging par 4, 9th (52 yds) is played over water through a narrow avenue of towering trees an dense rhododendrons. An official PGA European Tour Venue an hosts he Compaq European Grand Prix.

Proper Championship Course
Excellent course with equally matching scenery. Playing in Autumn after some mixed weather and the tee boxes, fairways, bunkers, and greens were all immaculate. Challenging for the average golfer but definitely worth it despite a few lost balls…will be coming back.
Lovely quiet round on the Hunting!
Beautiful setting, great facilities, decent course condition and layout. Very quiet when I played with the course to myself it seemed. Thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and found the sand surrounding the greens frequently. Would definitely play again when in the area.
Great winter course
The Hunting is a great course
We played in early December so it was impressive to find the course in such good condition.
The whole course was open, playing proper tee boxes and full greens. Fairways are well drained and still pretty firm underfoot.
Slaley Hall is very welcoming although in low season the 19th hole bar was closed - main bar is very nice though and food on offer was of a good standard.
£47 is quite steep for a round but worth it for the occasional round. The Priestman course is significantly cheaper and a very good second choice.
Excellent Location and Course
Enjoy the course and supporting services. You can make a full day of activity if you have family and friends with you. There is an outdoor centre that is a solid added attraction,
Course feels neglected
Its a while since we had been here, the road up to the hotel is very rough, and the place has a general feeling of being unloved.
Greens are all very patchy, fairways are excellent.
Tee boxes are very poor, lots of mole heaps. We were out at 08.20 so should have been pristine but there were lots of broken tees on every tee and bins were full to overflowing. This left the course looking very uncared for.
Ate in Claret jug after round and staff uninterested, food not great value for what you get.
All in all golf cheap but needs to be better care taken.
Not what it used to be
I enjoyed playing the course again with a friend that hadn’t played there before. Although everything was alright, it just wasn’t as well looked after. The driveway up was riddled with potholes. The food more expensive than I remember £20 for a burger. The course was as I remember just not as well attended to. The fairways and tees I couldn’t fault, the greens were patchy in places and slow. Some of the surrounds were not cut properly on the back 9 (what used to be the front 9) and the bunkers were compacted, full of stones and needed sand. I would play again if the price was right as I just love the test of golf, I just wished it had been better, but I think given the weather conditions many green staff have had to cope with it’s probably “par for the course”. I paid £60 but would not have liked to have paid more as there’s other surrounding course for less money in better condition.
Should have been closed
I know from previous occasions how good a course Slaley Hall Hunting course is and was looking forward to play. Unfortunately such a large amount of rain fell the day before that the course was truly unplayable. If you hit nice shots down the fairway and cannot find the ball as it is plugged deep underground, you have no chance.
After nine holes we asked in the shop if there was a rain check option but we’re told as it was open it was considered playable. This is the only time I have ever felt that an open course should have been shut and I could not understand the logic. Such a shame!
Great course, but very slow.
Not played here since they changed the layout and the course was as good as I remembered. Bunkers could do with a load more sand in them.
Biggest problem of the day was the pace of play. 5+ hours for 18 holes is frustrating and there wasn’t anyone on course to ensure pace was being kept up.
Will be back but midweek as a Saturday it’s just too congested.
Disappointed
We were informed by the starter that there had been a booking mess up and things were a little slow, this turned out to be a huge understatement, we ended up quitting the round on the 12th after 3 hours 30 mins, arriving on the 11th and 12th tees to find 2 groups waiting to tee off it was clear we would have another 2 hours to finish which is simply not acceptable.
Getting in to the bar at 17:30 we were informed no food was being served even though other tables seemingly on package deals we’re ordering food so the kitchen was clearly still open but would seem not for guests on day tickets
Not what we expected from a supposed premier venue
